Every kiss is bloody and bittersweet to Hijikata, every breath a gasp for life. But he can't bring himself to break away from Souji, can't untangle their hands from shoulders and waists.
A hitch in his breath, then Souji regretfully pulls away and attempts to muffle his hacking coughs with his white sleeve. It falls away red and he gives Hijikata a beautifully sad smile.
He closes the gap between them again.
They're making up for lost time. Every moment spent apart is loss, and they both know they won't be doing this next year because Souji will be dead.
