AN: Hello. I luckily managed to make this one quicker. Made for Tumblr user princessquinnella.
Enjoy!
Quinnella came back to her room after eating breakfast. Normally she would go tinker something like any tinker fairy, but she wasn't in her home or with her fairy friends. This made her feel a bit sad. She passed an open closet before she noticed something inside it. She went to see what it was. It was a broken violin. Quinnella was a bit confused. Don't people usually dump these things? Well, muce can't be different, but still. It seems that whoever this belongs to either doesn't want to give it up or hasn't found a replacement. Could be both. Unlike fairies, some human things are too difficult to make and too hard to get, for reasons she is not sure. But obviously, it also includes mice.
Who could this be? Elizabeth's? She probably got lectured for breaking it and hasn't dared to ask for a new one. Or maybe someone else broke it to bully her and she has stopped playing? The image of the poor mouse crying to see her violin get broken appeared in Quinnella's mind. The poor girl tries to look all happy and confident on her uncle and yet… probably misses her dear violin.
That's when Quinnella thought of something. She pucks the broken violin and places it on an empty desk table in her room. She first looks at how badly broken it is before looking for anything useful to fix it. There have been times when she has fixed instruments to other fairies who play music. The violins in Pixie Hollow are almost easy to fix, but this could be a bit tricky. But she is willing to try. So far it seems the strings were unharmed. It was just the wooden part that had broken in half. Well, it should be easy to fix.
As time passes, in the evening Basil is in his chair, in his thoughts and smoking his pipe while Dawson reads the newspaper. Elizabeth was reading a book about fairies.
"Umm… uncle, how long do you think we can keep Quinnella here?" Elizabeth asks.
"Few days, a week or two… maybe a month…why?" Basil asked.
"As much as I like her company, I fear she must go back in Autumn to Pixie Hollow."
"What makes you think that?" Dawson asked.
"According to this, Quinnella can't stay for winter. Or at least not go outside." Elizabeth said. "The wings of the fairies are fragile to cold. If they froze they broke."
Both gentlemice were shocked to hear that.
"Oh my!" Dawson said.
"What about winter fairies?" Basil asked.
"It's the opposite. They can't stand the warmth. Otherwise, their wings melt."
Basil gets up and goes to look for the calendar. It's still July, so they have about two-three months when never fairies come to change the season. Hopefully, it will be enough, but he doesn't want to keep her long against her will. It's what Ratigan would want. It would be best if he speaks to her about it. She would understand if she knew the situation.
He was about to go see her when she suddenly arrived.
"Elizabeth, I got you something."
"For me?" Elizabeth smiles at that and comes closer to see it. A gift from a fairy? How great is that!
"I found it in the closet of my room and I thought to fix it," Quinnella said before showing the fixed violin. It looked almost as new, except you could almost see the lines from which it had been broken but at the same time, it looks like some have painted those lines with silver paint.
Basil immediately recognizes it and tries to walk away, before…
"You fixed uncle's violin," Elizabeth said, amazed. Basil stopped. Too late to walk away.
"It's not yours?" Quinnella asked.
"Oh no. I have mine in my room. I'm not so careless as to accidentally sit on my violin." Elizabeth said, smiling teasingly as she looked at her uncle. Dawson said nothing for she is right. He sat on it… by accident.
Basil was about to say something to his niece, for telling about that moment.
"Is this yours?" Quinnella asked, meaning the violin.
"Yes," he admits, trying to avoid looking at her.
"I'm sorry. I thought it was Elizabeth's and…"
"It's alright. It's very kind of you to fix it. I..." Basil said as he rubbed behind his neck.
"You can always start playing the flute." Elizabeth teases. "Mom said you were very good at it."
"Or I could smash yours." Basil points out, asking her to be quiet. Elizabeth sticks her tongue out teasingly.
Quinnella walks to him and offers him his violin. Basil examines his old instrument before going to get his bow which he has close to his chair and his new violin. It seems he held onto the old bow as if it was the only comfort he had from his old instrument.
After checking each string he starts to play. Elizabeth smiles hearing her uncle play again. Dawson watched as his associate played, while Quinnella…
Quinnella was mesmerized by his skill at playing. Sure, they were fairies that played music, but this felt different.
"It's like it's all-new," Basil said as he stopped. Elizabeth cheered and went to hug him. Dawson smiles at Basil's reaction. He still needs to get used to his niece's hugs.
Quinnella smiles at the view and intends to go back to her room before Basil goes after her.
"Look, miss…" he says as they stood in the hallway.
"Just Quinnella."
"Quinnella… Thank you for fixing it, but… you didn't need to…"
"It's okay," Quinnella said. "I am a tinker fairy, I mean to fix and build things. And I could tell that the violin meant so much to you."
Basil blushes at that. "It was a gift from my sister."
"Elizabeth's mother?"
"She gave it to me after I graduated from Radcliffe University."
"She must be dear to you."
"She followed me everywhere in our home. She almost cried when I left to study. And she insisted I come to her wedding, which was actually a small one."
"And she trusted Elizabeth to you." Quinnella figured. Basil looks away blushing. He didn't want to admit it out loud, but yes, out of all the siblings she chose him. "Is there anything I need to pay…"
"Oh, no need for that. As I said, I'm a tinker fairy. It's what I do." Quinnella said as she gave a quick peck on his cheek before going back to her room.
Basil stood still. Did she just kiss his cheek? Sure, many mouse ladies have given kisses to his cheek when he has solved a case that included someone they knew. But this one, it's…
His heart was beating fast. He rushed quickly to his room. It's happening again. First because of the hug and now the kiss… No, stop it! It can't happen! She needs to go back to her home. And just as Elizabeth told she can't leave during the winter. There's no way he could…
Basil groans and covers his face with a pillow.
PLEASE LEAVE A REVIEW. BIG PLSSS!
AN: Now... Basil knows they have deadline to get Quinnella back to Pixie Hollow. But would be easy? Especially if he is starting to feel like that? Let's find out on next chapter.
