Chapter 8

Camille, Josh and Marcel were having a night out in Rousseau's when Caroline showed up.

"Hey, Caroline, what are you doing here? Aren't you suppose to be in Mystic Falls by now?" Marcel asked when he noticed Caroline walking towards them. He also noticed that she was different, she had black jeans and a black umbilical shirt on.

"I was, but then one of my daughters died and Alaric cancelled the party, so I have been partying in New Orleans the whole day. Now I came to see, if you losers would be hanging here like every night. And here you are." She smiled.

"Wait, one of your twins died? What happened? Are you ok?" Camille asked.

"Oh, now you are showing concern? Where were you, when we all searched for some way to stop it?"

Camille fell silent at that, so Marcel asked, "Where's Klaus?"

"Beats me. Who wants to dance with me? Josh?"

"I'm not a good dancer."

"Oh, come on." And she dragged him to the dance floor.

After the dance, they came back to Marcel and Camille.

"Hey, Camille, can I talk to you outside for a minute. I want to apologize."

"Uh, okay." And Camille followed Caroline outside, in the alley behind the bar.

When they first got outside, Caroline kept the distance.

"Tell me, Camille, why didn't you help us try to save my girls? You have all whose dark objects. Some of them might have had some use."

"I was bitter," Camille admitted it.

"Yes, you were bitter," Caroline accused as she circled closer to her, "You were bitter that Klaus chose me over you. And you never quite recovered from it, did you?"

"Yes."

"But why did my daughters have to suffer because of it?"

"Caroline, I don't even know If my dark objects could have helped you."

"I guess now we'll never know" Caroline said as she grabbed Camille and wrapped an arm around Camille's neck, standing behind her.

Caroline was in the middle of feeding Camille her vampire blood when Klaus showed up.

"Sweetheart, what are you doing?" Klaus asked Caroline.

"Which one of us are you talking to? I can't keep up with who is your sweetheart any given time. If it's her, then she's drinking my blood to get ready for transition, and if it's me, then I'm feeding her that blood, to turn her." And she smiled at him with her smile not quite reaching her eyes.

"You turned it off," he sighed in defeat.

"Yes, yes I did," and smiling she grabbed Camille by the throat ready to snap it

"Please don't do that. You'll regret it for the rest of your life."

"Again, you are ambiguous. Do I regret it because I feel bad after the fact or because you make me regret by avenging me?"

"Door number 1," he hissed.

"Yeah, I probably will, but there's one thing you can do to save the mother of your child."

"What?" he continued to hiss in frustration. In frustration that he's not in control of the situation, that Caroline was going to do something that would push her even more darker place than the one she already was in. And of course because some part of him loved Camille and didn't want anything to happen to her.

"You do it too, turn it off, I mean,"

"I can't."

"Yes, you can. You just don't want to. What are you afraid of?"

"Do you have any idea what I'm capable of. You know I'm a monster but that's been with humanity switch on, you have no idea what I could do with it off."

"But that's the Klaus Mikaelson I want." Now Caroline pressed her hands tighter around Camille's neck and Camille at the same time shook her head, telling him not to do it. "Do it, Klaus."

"Okay, I'll do it," Klaus sighed in defeat.

"NOW, KLAUS!"

Klaus closed his eyes for a seconds, focused himself and when he opened his eyes, he had this mischievous smirk on and his eyes were dark with thoughts about all the evil things he now wanted to do. With her.

Caroline dropped Camille who run back inside the bar and went towards Klaus, eyeing him curiously.

"Klaus?"

Klaus answered with punching her on the face so hard that she flew 10 feet away from him.

When she got up, she herself wore a mischievous smile of her own, fully contempt with having him the way he wanted him.

Camille ran inside the bar and went straight to Josh and Marcel.

"We are in a lot of trouble. The whole city" she said to them as she tried to collect her breath.

"Camille, what are you talking about?" Marcel asked.

"She's talking about the unnecessary evil,"

That was Klaus on stage where he had turned off the music. He had his hybrid face on as people started to scream and tried to leave the bar as he and Caroline sealed the front and back entrance.

"Klaus, what are you doing? What game are you playing here?"

"Me? I'm not playing a game. Or am I," he feigned thinking about it. "Sweetheart, want to tell them, what are the rules of the game that we are playing?"

"Sure", as they walked towards each other on the dancefloor, leaving the people exiting the doors.

"The rules are that we let the humans have 20 seconds to escape before we go for them all," After becoming face to face with each other, Klaus and Caroline turn to look at the trio (Josh, Marcel and Camille) grinning wickedly from ear to ear.

"If you haven't gotten it by now, this is the place you…RUN."

Marcel tells Josh to take Camille somewhere safe which he does as the 20 seconds have run out and Caroline and Klaus disappear in an instant. The people who left the bar were hunted down by them and most of them were killed. The only ones who survived were the ones Marcel was able to save in time.

When Klaus met Caroline in an alley after the fact he first had to grab her for a passionate kiss full of hunger. He wanted her as much as blood right now so he broke the kiss and asked her. "What do you want to do now, my queen?"

"What happened to 'love'?

"It's dated to call you that. You are a new version of yourself, so am I, so you need a better nickname. I am the king of New Orleans and you are my queen. We are going to rock this city at it's core."

Caroline grinned at that. "Can we start with your dumb ex-girlfriend. Can we kill her?"

"You are asking like you even need a permission. We'll do with her whatever you want to do with her!"

"Great, thanks, honey." She grinned.

"Anytime." He smirked at her.

Josh had taken her to her apartment that was on her neighbor's name and even Klaus wasn't invited, not to mention Caroline.

"You are safe here, for the time being. What was that anyway, Klaus acting like that?" Josh asked her.

"Don't you get it. She used me as leverage to get him to turn his emotions off. If you think Caroline is dangerous with out her humanity, than Klaus, the original hybrid is 1000 times that."

"You should listen to her, Josh, she's right." That was Klaus' voice behind the Camille's apartment door.

"Klaus, go away, you can't get in here." Josh yelled.

"Can't we, are you sure?" This time it was Caroline's voice.

Josh didn't answer as the apartment's door suddenly just flew open.

"You can't come in here. You are not invited in. I took care of it." Camille said, with a trembling voice.

"Oh, you mean Sophie from the 2nd floor." And with that Caroline came in to view, dropping Sophie's body on the floor before them.

"It was Sophie, wasn't it. I guess we can come in then." Klaus and Caroline looked at each other for a second, smiling and Klaus told Caroline, "Ladies first."

So Caroline slowly took a step in to the room while Klaus did the same after her.

"Well this doesn't bode well for our hero, Josh." And with one swift move Klaus pulled Josh's heart out of his chest and Camille just screamed "NOOOOOOOOOO!" at the top of her lungs.

"I believe you have your own problems, missy," Caroline told Camille as she yanked her up from the chair she was sitting on.

"Hey, Klaus, what do you think we should do with your ex. If we kill her now, she will come back as yet another miserable vampire. So I was thinking we wait 24 hours. What should we do until then, to pass the time."

"Hmm…over time, I have learned thousands of torture techniques, so we could try those."

"Hmm…before we resort to you techniques, let's dry with one of mines. Let's do a Q&A. As you were her boyfriend for years, she should know a little about you, doesn't she."

"That seems like a boring torture game, my dear queen" he sighed as he sat down, licking his fingers.

"No, I mean, for every wrong answer, you hurt him physically, like I don't now, make cuts to her pretty face or stabbing her just enough that it hurts but doesn't kill her."

"Okay, let's do it. You ask the questions, I'll do the torture part." Klaus said mischievously.

"Ok, Cami, first question. What was the name of the doppelganger who Klaus had to kill to become a true hybrid?"

"Your best friend, Elena Gilbert." Camille answered, holding her breath.

"Wow, I'm impressed, you really know his history in Mystic Falls."

"Well, he talked to me. We didn't just have sex all the time." Camille snapped.

In anger, Caroline grabbed her throat, making Cami look at her, " You want to hold on to your teeth or what?"

"Okay, Care, next question?"

"Klaus, you have never ever called me that?"

"The old me didn't call you that, besides, it's what lovers call you, right?"

"Right," she went to kiss him while his hands were all over her ass earning a disgusted look from Camille.

Caroline broke apart that kiss and went on, "Okay, you know Klaus history, let's see if you know our history" she said gesturing towards Klaus.

"That's-" Camille started, but Caroline cut her off.

"What did Klaus promise me when he came to Mystic Falls to attend my graduation?"

"That's impossible for me to know as Klaus doesn't talk about his love life with other women."

"Well, take a wild guess."

"Okay…maybe he promised as a graduation gift to take you to see the world with his private jet."

"Wow, that's pretty close as this was one of his early promises, but not close enough."

"So, Klaus, what do you want to do with her?"

"Hmm…" with that Klaus revealed to Camille that he had her iron in hand and it was already put in to a socket.

"Oh, burning her, I love that one." Caroline got excited.

"Yes, that's one of the good ones. I would preferably use iron rods but this will also do the trick."

"Now we just have to wait few minutes for it to heat up. What should we do until then." Caroline asked Klaus.

"I got a few ideas," as he pulled her in to him, grabbed her ass and started kissing her as Camille just looked on with disgust.

In a few minutes the iron was ready and they started to discuss, where to do it. They couldn't decide, so Caroline asked Camille's opinion.

"Go to hell. Both of you."

"You first," Caroline answered as Klaus started with her arm, pressing the iron on her arm, just a little down from her shoulder. As she cried in agony, they just smiled at each other.

So for the bulk of the next few hours Caroline asked different questions about Klaus's history in Mystic Falls, some Camille got right and was spared few minutes of peace, while some she didn't get so right and in the end she had burn marks all over her body.

At the same time in Mikaelson family mansion. Everyone, except Hope and Nik, were discussing the urgent matter.

"Marcel, are you certain that Klaus and Caroline have both turned off their emotions?" Freya asked.

"Why don't you ask the people I saved from their fangs earlier." Marcel snapped at her.

"Okay, Marcel, cut it out, won't you. We can't turn on each other when there's a huge problem in our hands." Rebekah said over Skype. She and Elijah were on it to discuss it as a family.

"Huge problem is putting it mildly Rebekah," Elijah said, "Rebekah, remember Klaus without humanity in 1300s?"

"How could I forget the massacre and the torture he put those people through just for the fun of it."

"Okay, we can't worry about people in general when he and Caroline might be torturing and killing Josh and Camille as we speak." Hayley chimed in.

"She's right, we need to come up with a plan NOW," Marcel agreed.

"Hope, Hope is our plan," Freya declared.

"Hope? You want to put Hope in danger?" Hayley asked, incredulous.

"Actually, I tend to agree with Freya as Hope and Nik are probably the only ones Klaus wouldn't hurt as he would probably kill the rest of us with pleasure." Elijah agreed with Freya.

"You sure? I don't allow Hope to be put under any kind of danger."

"I want to do it, Mom. I'm the only one who can as you can't use Nik, he's too young for this."

"Okay, but only if you are sure that you can convince your dad to turn it on."

"I am. What about, Caroline?"

"Well, I guess we need Lizzie for that.." Hayley suggested.

"No, Klaus and Caroline would kill us after the fact." Rebekah said over Skype.

"So let them hate us, at least everyone is safe." Hayley tried to convince everybody. "I hope you agree, as I already called Alaric, explained the situation and he's on his way with Lizzie. But he wants us to do everything in our power to keep her safe."

"Well, I can put a protection spell on her and Hope. So even if they get hurt, they would survive and heal." Freya was thinking out loud.

"You do that, please," Rebekah said to Freya, "Ok, but Nik first. We have to get his humanity on first and then deal with Caroline."

It was a dawn already when Klaus had enough of that particular torture technique.

"Ok, this is getting boring, my dear. Let's think of something else."

"Okay, what about, truth and dare?"

"How's that for torture?"

"Hello, mental torture, besides, there a lot of things you can make her do."

"No I have enough of kid games. How about sexual torture?"

"You want to have sex with her?" Carline asked, earning that look that made her wish she hadn't asked. "Ugh, don't answer that."

"Okay, we don't do that. So what else is there besides killing her?"

"I have had enough of this too," And before Klaus could react, Caroline went and snapped her neck.

"Caroline, what did you just do?"

" I got enough of it."

"You became jealous?"

"I became jealous, yes. Wouldn't you? The day before yesterday you got jealous of me calling somebody "Hottie".

"That was then, now I wouldn't mind seeing you make out with some guy. I think it would be incredibly hot."

"Oh," Caroline said, as the realization dawned on her.

"And now we have a one more miserable vampire in our hands. What are we suppose to with her now?"

"Why don't you let us handle it?"

Caroline and Klaus turned to look at the doorway where they saw Hayley and Marcel stand with Freya.

Both Caroline and Klaus withered in pain as Freya worked her magic while Marcel and Hayley saved Camille from their hands. Marcel saw Josh's body on the floor and wanted to get upset but knew he couldn't just then as Hayley said, "Camille's neck is broken, she's dead."

"No, she's not, according to Josh, Caroline fed Camille her blood last night."

"But look at the burn marks all over her body, that's some kind of torture right?"

"Let's just take her away from here and we'll hand her over to a friend of mine who they don't know, so she'd be safe until we deal with Klaus."

"Yeah, aren't you forgetting something?"

Now Marcel remembered to snap Caroline's neck for the time being. So she was also taken out of the equation.

When Marcel and Hayley returned, Freya temporarily released Klaus from pain.

"What is this? Some misguided intervention." Klaus asked.

"You could say that, dad." Hope said as she came in to the view and stepped inside.

"Why did you bring her here. To watch the show?"

"So you could talk to your daughter and explain to her everything you have been doing for the past 12 hours or so."

"I have nothing to say to her," Klaus wanted to escape but Hope stepped in front of him.

"Don't make me hurt you, dad."

"What do you want, Hope?" Klaus hissed.

"I want you to turn your humanity on. Dad, I love you and I need my father. So does Nik." Hope looked her father in the eye, hoping to get some emotion from him.

Klaus appeared to listen to her as he dropped his arrogant look.

"And if you can't do it for your children, then do it for Caroline. We will get her to turn her humanity on and then she's going to need you. You know she can't deal with that grief alone and there's no one who could substitute you in her life. She's going to destroy herself if you are not there to pick up the pieces."

Klaus heard and understood what her daughter was telling him. If they did find away to bring her back, she would find another way to destroy herself. Hope and Nik would be fine without him but not Caroline. So he closed his eyes for a second, focused, and when he opened them, the first thing he did, was hugging her daughter.

Then he looked around in the apartment and last night activities came rushing back with an emotional burden. "Marcel, I am so sorry about Josh."

Marcel was just silent and didn't say anything.

"How is Camille?" Klaus asked.

"We don't know. She's at Marcel's friend's place but I can get someone to bring her home." Hayley said in a whisper, knowing how hard it must be for Klaus.

"Not to the compound. I assume you have Caroline there and I would rather not have them together in one place yet"

"Yes, oh my god, what was I thinking. Of course we can't have that."

"Don't beat yourself up for it, Hayley. We're all on edge and worried."

"Dad, we also have plan for Caroline and it's…"

"You're going to bring Lizzie here?"

"Yes."

"I think it should do the trick. For Caroline, the daughter who survived, should be her emotional trigger. She'll turn it on, to be there for her."

"And you'll be there for Caroline, right dad?"

"Of course, sweetheart." Klaus assured his daughter. "Let's go, get out of here."

"Klaus, I just got off the phone with Alaric, he's at the compound with Lizzie and Caroline is chained to the basement."

"Why in the basement? Surely there are other nicer room where we can trap her? Okay, never mind, let's go."

Caroline was chained with manacles and chains in the basement when she saw Alaric approach with Lizzie.

"Mom?"

Caroline got visibly upset with seeing her daughter as she started to rattle the chains.

"Why did you bring her here?" Caroline asked Alaric

"Mom, please turn your humanity back on."

Caroline refused to look her daughter in the eye.

"Mom, I need you now more than ever. I can't do this by myself. Me and dad need you so much. Please come back to us." Lizzie cried.

Caroline thought about. She didn't want to deal with her daughters death but at the same time this would rob her daughter a mother too.

"No, I can't, I can't. Rick, LET ME OUT OF THESE CHAINS!"

Alaric didn't say anything. Klaus also came in to the cell now.

"Mom, please turn it on. At first you'll feel devastated but given time it will get better when we stick together. Me, you, dad and even Hope's dad. We need you. Please come back to us."

Caroline looked around the room and saw her daughter, Klaus and Alaric with a pleading face.

She felt she didn't have a choice. If she didn't turn it on herself, Klaus would eventually do it. So she closed her eyes for a couple of seconds, focused and opened them again. And all those emotions she had tried to escape for the last 24 hours came rushing back.

Klaus saw that and instantly went and released her from the chains, after which she went to hug her daughter as they both cried their hearts out.

2 days later

Camille was at her home when there was a knock on the door. It was Klaus.

When he saw her alive and well, with her injuries healed, the first thing he said, was, "You drank the blood, you became a vampire."

"I thought about it for the longest time but I decided that even as a vampire there is some good I could do in the world. Besides, I'm not really an immortal, there's a way to kill me, much easier than to kill you."

"I'm just glad you are okay."

"Physically yes, but mentally I'm a mess. How could you this to me Klaus, how could you torture me like that. I'm a mother of your child."

"I know. But when you turn it off, all the feelings of love, friendship, kindness, it all disappears and what is left, is a demon who does unspeakable things."

"You turned it off, to save me from being a vampire, but at the end of the day you did kill me and turned me into one. So it was a pretty stupid move to give in to her."

"It was," he said regretfully .

"Okay, is that why you came, to see if I was still breathing."

"And to apologize for what we did to you. I'll take all the blame, don't blame Caroline."

"Well, not now, not when she is grieving."

"What do you mean by that?"

"That she has it coming. My payback. Not just for turning me, but for stealing you from under my nose"

"Camille," Klaus hissed, closing the distance between them and roughly grabbing her by the arms.

"You are not going to hurt her. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Do you understand me? Or I will compel you to do so."

"Wow, she really has you wrapped around her little finger. You are so pathetic. Please get out of my home now."

"Remember what I just said," and with that he left.

Alaric, Lizzie, Caroline and Klaus were at Alaric's and Caroline's house after the funeral. Caroline and Lizzie were in each other's embrace in Caroline's bedroom while Alaric and Klaus talked in the kitchen.

"I should probably make you a bed on the couch as Caroline is probably going to sleep with Lizzie in her bed."

"Thank you, Alaric, for your hospitality."

"Well, It's not like I have a choice. I think it's time that I accept that you are a huge part of Caroline's life. But you are leaving tomorrow morning?"

"Yes, unless Caroline wants me to stay. I can't deny her anything right now."

Caroline was okay with Klaus leaving so he left the next morning and didn't come to the city for weeks. Alaric told him that Caroline spent most of the time in bed sleeping sometimes alone, sometimes with Lizzie. Lizzie was given some time to be away from school. But the day she returned to school, Caroline called Klaus.

"Hello, love. How are you?"

"It's pretty much the same. I wanted to ask if you and Freya have found out something about what went wrong with the spell?"

"Not yet, but we are planning to go to Bukarest the day after tomorrow to investigate."

"I'm going to join you on that trip"

"Caroline, sweetheart, I don't think-"

"This is not a debate, Klaus. Either you let me come along or I go alone. Either way I'm going."

Klaus sighed in defeat. "Okay, but do you need us to come pick you up?"

"No, I'll come to NO tomorrow and then we can go from there"

"I'll wait you at the airport when you land as always."

"Yeah."

And Klaus heard the line go deaf so he put his phone away.

The next day when Klaus saw Caroline for the first time in a weeks, he almost didn't recognize her. She wore all black but no revealing clothes, on the contrary, they were very modest. Her hair hadn't been brushed for weeks and she was pale and had dark circles around her eyes. But Klaus decided not to comment.

When they got to the compound and reached the courtyard Caroline asked Klaus, "Where's Freya? Is she home? I need to talk to her."

"I'm here." That was Freya coming in.

Caroline turned to look at her, "Tell me what went wrong? Tell me WHY MY DAUGTER IS DEAD BECAUSE OF YOUR INCOMPETENCY?"

"Caroline, I know you are grieving but magic isn't exact science, a lot can go wrong and there are loopholes that can be taken advantage of," Freya almost whispered, "I have read and searched the spell a thousand times but there's no proof anywhere that this spell does what the gypsy told you it would do. As I said, there are always loopholes"

"Caroline, sweetheart, If you need to blame somebody, blame me. Maybe I should never have given you that money." Klaus tried to reason with her.

"Why did you tell me that the gypsies can't be trusted, Klaus? Did you wipe some of them out that they are to this day mad at you and maybe that was their payback."

"It's possible, yes."

Caroline couldn't deal with this and as tears started to sting her eyes, she suddenly ran upstairs to his bedroom and closed the door with a bang.

"Niklaus, If you didn't read the situation correctly, she wants to be alone."

Few hours later Klaus decided to go to his bedroom and see how she was. He found her sitting on the balcony with a glass of bourbon.

"Sweetheart, do you want something to eat?"

"No."

"Caroline, please don't shut me out. It's not good for you. Tell me that you are angry with me, tell me that you hate me or that it's all my fault. Because it is."

Caroline was just silent, seemed to be in another world, so Klaus decided to leave.

"Would it ease your mind? If I blamed you." He turned to look at her just as she punched him in the face.

"BECAUSE I DO BLAME YOU AND YOUR FAMILY FOR THIS!" She said as she continued to punch him. He just stood there, didn't even try to defend himself and let her take it out on him.

"I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU FOR THIS, KLAUS. YOU AND YOUR THOUSAND ENEMIES!"

"YOUR SISTER DIDN'T KNOW WHAT SHE WAS DOING AND I ALSO BLAME YOU FOR THIS!"

"IT YOUR FAULT THAT CAMILLE'S NOW A VAMPIRE."

"ALL THOSE PEOPLE WE KILLED, ALSO YOU FAULT."

By now she was on the verge of having a nervous breakdown and he was afraid that she would turn it off again.

"Shh…" He tried to console and hug her but she kept beating his chest until she collapsed on the floor and Klaus also sat down on the floor to take her in his arms while she cried. They sat there like that for a long time before Klaus swooped her up and gently put her on the bed to sleep and lied down next to her to take her in his arms as they both fell asleep.

The next day they (Klaus, Freya and Caroline) took a private jet to Bukarest because they decided not to assume anything and go there and find out exactly what went wrong.

When Klaus decided to go talk to the pilot, Freya went and sat down next to Caroline.

"You know, when I was young, like thousand years ago, I also lost a child, granted I had to kill him myself so aunt Dahlia wouldn't get him. But I just wanted you to know that I kind a know how it feels. Although it's not the same as losing a child you have been with for more than 16 years."

Caroline offered the other woman a small smile, as she thanked her.

"I feel a little better after letting my anger out. I want you to know that I don't really blame you or your brother or your family, I just needed a punching bag."

"I know." And with that she offered Caroline some comfort by gripping gently her arm.

"Ladies, get ready, we start descending in five minutes." That was Klaus.

They found the gypsy who sold Caroline the spell in a book store, that sold old used books.

"Are you trying to find another fool to sell your bullshit to?" Caroline asked arrogantly as she approached the woman.

The minute she saw Caroline, she tried to run for the door but Klaus stopped her by stepping in between her and the door.

"I believe you didn't answer my girlfriend's question."

Caroline pushed the gypsy against the bookshelf and told her in a threatening voice, "Tell me what spell did you sell me? Why didn't it work?"

The woman looked away from Caroline for a second to look that next to Klaus Mikaelson there was another woman who looked like a witch so she decided that she had to tell the truth.
"I sold you the correct spell, it just doesn't work for Gemini coven. If it did, don't you think that somebody in the coven would have used it long time ago?"

"Why?"

"Do you think that I didn't know who you were when you came to me? Niklaus Mikaelson's little girlfriend, baby vampire looking for a way to save her babies. That was too good a chance for a revenge to pass up."

"Why? What has he done to you?" Caroline continued to ask.

"He didn't tell you? Klaus Mikaelson has a huge part in our history. He's the reason why the gypsies are scattered all around the world away from their homeland. He didn't just kill a lot of us but made us run from our home. He's a real devil."

By now Freya was standing next to Caroline and asked the gypsy "Why doesn't the spell work for the Gemini coven?"

"I don't know the specifics. Something to do with them being twins. You see the other covens just picked a leader between the two strongest witches of the coven, the Merge didn't happen with twins as it did with the Gemini coven. Gemini coven over all is a very different kind of coven with their own magic."

"And you decided to use my desperation for you own gain. You know that you won't leave this store alive, don't you?"

"Just get on with it."

With that Klaus gave Caroline a knife with which she stabbed the woman in the chest without no hesitation.

"Let's go home," she said with no emotion whatsoever.
