"Christian, you just can't run away like that," the brown haired girl called out from behind. Her horse had slowed to a trot and she was trailing the young man at a slow pace. He hadn't sped up in a few hundred yards; she knew he was listening to her.
"It seems like that's what I'm doing, doesn't it, Alexandra?" he returned. "Just turn around and go home. There's no need for you to be following me." He turned towards her to emphasize his point. "Go home, Alex."
"No," she countered impudently. "I'm not going home. By the way, I'm not following you, either. I'm simply just going this way."
"Fine," he sighed. "But at the next town, I'm going one way and you are not to follow, understand?"
"Yes, yes." She muttered. "I won't follow you."
"Good."
They continued riding in silence for awhile, Christian thinking of how best to lose her once they got to town, Alexandra contemplating how to follow him without his knowledge. In a second's foresight, she broke the stillness.
"Christian, I think someone's following us."
He turned, confused and stared into the blackness behind her. Nothing, as far as he could see. He was about to say that the girl was imagining things when he heard a rustle in the distance. Making a quick hand gesture towards her not to move, he got off his horse and walked towards the source of the noise.
Sneaking up on anything was one of Christian's talents and he did so with no great difficulty. Pushing aside the bush, he only found a rabbit that stared confusedly at him before hopping away.
"I think it's just your imagination, Alexandra," he started as he turned back towards her. She didn't say anything. Whirling around, an odd sight met his eyes.
Alexandra stood still next to her horse, staring straight ahead and not blinking. He walked towards her but she didn't even acknowledge him, continuing to stare further up the road towards nothingness.
"Alexandra?" he tried again but she wouldn't turn towards him. Once he was close enough to notice, he saw a faint reddish glow around her. Her horse tossed its head. He murmured her name again. This time he was graced with a sideways look.
"Christian?" his named tumbled from her lips, with the impression that she was questioning the situation. He reached out to grab her hand but she leaned away.
"No, Christian. Don't come any closer," she warned. He watched her, confused as she tmounted her horse and started off in the opposite direction. Worried, Christian jumped on his own horse and followed her.
After a few bends in the path, he couldn't see her anymore but kept riding, regardless. If anything happened to her, it would be his fault. He shouldn't have left her alone. It wasn't until he heard an odd noise that he stopped.
On the side of the road stood her horse, Beau. Alexandra was nowhere to be seen.
Kaito woke up in a cold sweat. Every night it was the same dream and every night, Aoko or Alexandra or whoever she was was lost to him forever.
Note: Well, it's the start of a new fic. Pretty different from what I've seen around but hopefully not too different that you won't like it. ; Look forward to it being continued soon!
