To Hide From the East
I stare to the East,
Where my Lover shall join his betrothed,
Unto which I shall become a shadow,
A parody that has been played to its fullest.
I am afraid,
Afraid of what is to come,
Afraid of what I have to face,
What is inside me.
Who is that which lives inside my skin,
What is the monster that lurks beneath.
I do not know how to hide,
To hide from the people I love,
To protect them,
From the monster I was made as a child,
And to shield myself as well,
From their pity,
Their compassion,
Their disappointment.
I am afraid, afraid of the East,
Where I will lose the one I love most.
But I know,
I know,
That I must not let my fear guard my life.
It is my life alone, not anyone else's,
I stare at the East,
And defy what is meant to come,
My son may become a child without his mother,
And though I might be a shadow,
I still live,
And while these moments of glory are few,
I shall enjoy them to the last.
