Before joining the battle, an inheritance cycle fanfic

Before joining the battle

He looked around the army with dark keen eyes in search of the only person he wanted to see and the sole person he was sent to capture. His best friend… His brother…

Eragon Shadeslayer.

He saw him in the distance. A fierce warrior along side his sapphire dragon… An invincible pair…

Murtagh watched them with admiration and dread. It was him who he had to face. Him who he must capture. His own flesh and blood… His brother.

The word 'brother' seemed to haunt him like a restless spirit ever since Galbatorix had told him the painful truth. His heart and his very soul twitched at the thought that he was not alone in the world anymore… Yet the twitch was painful… It was unbearable, for he had to fight for the wrong side. He had to fight for the cause he never wanted to believe in. He had to fight against his will…

'Thorn…'

'I'm here for you, Murtagh. Do not fear this meeting. We shall escape one day and prove ourselves to the Varden and to your brother' came the dragon's voice.

"Thank you, Thorn" he whispered out loud, patting the ruby scales on an enormous red dragon.

His dragon. His only friend. His sole companion.

'Come then, Thorn. Let us join this wretched battle… Let us face my brother…'

His words faded away as despair clenched onto him…

"I am sorry, Eragon" he whispered as he mounted Thorn and set off to the sky.
