They had been together for nearly three months. At first, the entire school couldn't seem to accept that they were together. Paige was the captain of the spirit squad and cheerleaders definitely couldn't be lesbians. Could they? They were called names, and were stared at as they walked one another to class for a few weeks. Eventually, the students moved on to something new to talk about. Conveniently enough, Heather Sinclair had a hairdying incident that got the school talking right around the same time. One girl had actually quit the spirit squad, but Paige and Hazel later joked that the girl couldn't tumble to save her life anyways and that it was her loss. Hazel couldn't understand the pair at first either, but she came around once she got used to the fact that Alex actually made Paige happy.
The two exited the movie theater hand in hand as it was nearing midnight. They're both in their theater concession stand attire.
"Thank GOD tonight is over. I don't think I could handle one more nachos with extra cheese..." Alex said with exasperation.
"I know what you mean, hon. I think Friday nights keep getting longer and longer." Paige said as they reached her car in the now empty parking lot. She unlocks and opens the door for Alex.
Alex took off her visor and threw it onto the dash board. She took her hair down and ran her fingers through it. Then, she shook out her hair wildy. "AHHHHH...whew..had to get that out" she said with a chuckle.
"Ok, crazy..." Paige said in a joking fashion.
"You love it..." Alex said with her usual cocky smirk.
Paige paused for a few seconds before her face turned serious. "I do..." her voice had lost the trace of humour that it had only seconds before.
"Paige, I didn't mean to imply...I wasn't trying to...I didn't mean to..." Alex couldn't seem to find her way around her own words. Her mouth was a tangled mess, and her previous confidence was gone.
"I did." Paige said as she kept her eyes on Alex. "I meant what I said."
"...Really?" her voice was quiet and raspy. A lump seemed to have formed in her throat.
"Yes, really. I love that crazy streak in you. I love that you try to act all tough, but you're really a big softie. I love that despite everything that life's dealt you, that you still manage to have a zest for it, and I especially love how you make me feel. Alex, I just love you."
Alex still stood there not saying a word. Paige took advantage of her silence and leaned in for a soft kiss. When she leaned back she noticed that Alex had tears forming in her eyes.
"Are those tears Miss Nunez?"
Alex wiped her eyes and pretended to be tough. "Nah, I just think I had some butter in my eye or something." She looked up at Paige. Her lips twisted into a smirk as the spark in her eyes had returned.
Paige swatted her arm. "That right there! That's what I'm talking about."
"I don't know what you're talking about, baby."
"Alex, get in the car..." Paige said with a laugh as she attempted to walk around to the driver's side. Alex grabbed her hand gently and pulled until only a few inches remained between them.
"I love you, too." She held Paige's eyes as she said those three words. Then, she closed in on the inches between them and kissed Paige. She reached her hand up and cupped Paige's face. Her fingers wound their way into blonde hair as the kiss deepened. A moment later, they pulled apart.
Paige continued looking into the deep dark brown eyes. "Let's head home..."
