Good Man, Good Pirate
It didn't take long after the Kraken started attacking that Jack realized their fate. They could fight all they wanted but the Beastie would soon swallow them all. And just like Jack always does, he had to cheat death.
Jack's first instinct was to get away. Land. Land is where he was safe. So he jumped into the longboat and started to paddle to shore as fast as possible.
He pulled long, hard strokes. The look on his face was dreadful as he looked back at the ship: his one true love. His freedom. It was being ripped apart board by board. His crew was being thrown around. But what did he care? After all, he was a pirate.
Jack had cheated death many times before. He had done cruel things to save his own skin. That's what pirates were expected of. It was just who he was. But this time, something was different.
Jack pushed all thoughts of the battle going on in front of him away. It was every man for himself and he had to get to shore. But with each push away from the ship, Elizabeth's words echoed in his mind.
Paddle.
"You're a good man"
Paddle.
"I have faith in you"
Paddle.
"There will come a moment when you have a chance to do the right thing"
He stopped paddling because he knew this was it. This was the moment to do the right thing. He had a feeling of longing. He was longing for the glory… But that wasn't who he was. It wasn't what a pirate would do. He knew if he went back to the ship he would most likely die.
Torn with decision he opened up the compass. It had helped him for so many times before. This was one of the first times Jack wasn't sure what he truly wanted.
The needle swayed and turned. Then finally, it stopped. Jack looked at it with disbelief. His eyes were nailed to the compass. Slowly he lifted his head up and looked in the direction the needle was pointing. There, in front of him, was the Black Pearl.
