Trailhead, Pine Creek, WY, 1983
I wish I knew how to quit you.
Why don't ya then, huh? Why don't ya just let me be?
Standing next to his pickup, Jack just stared off up the trail where they'd ridden earlier not able to watch as Ennis tore out of the dirt lot. Didn't want Ennis to see the tears falling from his eyes. Finally, he climbed into his truck and started the engine. Revving the engine a bit to let it warm up, he heard a song coming from the radio. Turning up the volume, he sat and listened feeling as if the words had been taken from his own life.
You're
not sure that you love me
But you're not sure enough to let me
go
Baby it ain't fair
You know you just keep me hanging
round
You say you don't wanna hurt me
Don't wanna see my
tears
So why are you still standing here
Just watching me
drown
(Chorus:)
And it's alright
Yeah, I'll be
fine
Don't worry about this heart of mine
Just, take your love
and hit the road
Cause nothing you can do or say
You're gonna
break my heart anyway
So just leave the pieces when you go
Now
you can drag out the heartache
Baby you can make it quick
You
can get it over with and let me move on
Don't concern yourself
with this mess you left for me
I can clean it up you see
Just
as long as your gone
(Chorus)
You're not making up your
mind
It's killin' me
You're wasting time
I need so much more
then that
(Chorus)
Leave the pieces when you go
Leave
the pieces when you go
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Leave the pieces when you go
He was half-way to his folks place up in Lightning Flat by the time the song ended. His body was on autopilot cause his mind was a little busy making the connections between his life with Ennis and the song that had just ended. The only conclusion he could come to, though, was:
"THERE'S NO FUCKIN' WAY I CAN QUIT HIM!"
