Edward Elric was the type to be stubborn.
Even though he won't admit it, it would be glaringly obvious that short blond is stubborn. And that is a fact. And I surely assure you that if you ever read a book named 'Biography of Edward Elric, The Fullmetal Alchemist by Anonymous', you'll see the word stubborn in big bold letters.
Even in love he was always stubborn.
Every time he ever gets that small tingling feeling, he would've just dismissed it as nothing. Though it may seem that it will be like this forever, fire bended the rules and change the way of how things works. And I'm sure you're familiar with Roy Mustang, the Flame Alchemist?
Even though how many times he denied it, the fact that the Flame sort of knows and kept making moves at him didn't help at all. So it was in one single burst that he said out:
"I LOVE YOU!"
He said it with such random timing and speed, and before he realized it, his mouth was occupied by another.
"You really are stubborn, Ed."
