Chapter 37
A couple of weeks after Sarah's birthday party, Penny was hanging out in Leonard's apartment having dinner with them on the coffee table while watching TV. They heard a knock on the door so Leonard stood up to open it and saw Sheldon standing out on the hall.
"Sheldon? What are you doing here? Come in." said Leonard as Sheldon stepped inside the apartment looking a little worried.
"Hi Penny! Hi Sarah!" he greeted the two.
"Hello Sheldon." said Penny.
"Hi uncle Sheldon! Do you want to eat with us?" asked Sarah.
"Oh, no thank you. I've already eaten." said Sheldon the turned to Leonard. "Leonard can I talk to you and Penny in private?" said Sheldon.
Leonard became a little worried. "What happened Sheldon?" he asked as Penny stood up beside Leonard.
Sheldon leaned over and whispered on Leonard's ear. Leonard nodded and looked at his daughter. "Sarah honey, we'll just go across the hall to Penny's place alright? We won't be long." He said.
Sarah nodded. "Okay daddy. Can I play my X-box?" she asked.
"Sure honey." said Leonard.
"Why don't you guys go ahead. I'll come right over after I finish cleaning up here." Penny said as Leonard and Sheldon went to Penny's apartment.
"What is this about Sheldon?" Leonard asked as he closed the door behind him.
"Perhaps it is better if we wait for Penny." said Sheldon.
"Is this about Amy?" asked Leonard. Sheldon nodded. "Oh my god what did you do?" he asked.
Sheldon became a little defensive. "Why did you assume that I did something wrong?" said Sheldon as Penny opened the door and sat beside Leonard.
"What's the matter Sheldon?" asked Penny.
Leonard turned to Penny. "It's about Amy." He said smiling.
Penny gasped. "Oh my god! Is she pregnant?" she asked teasing Sheldon. Leonard gave her the look.
"Really!?" Leonard said.
"What!? I'm just joking." said Penny.
Sheldon sighed. "No Penny, she's not pregnant." He said.
"Then tell us what it is." said Penny.
Sheldon took a deep breath. "I know this may sound funny or ridiculous but I think that my emotional condition towards Amy is beginning to develop into a positive state." said Sheldon.
"Emotional condition of what?" Penny asked.
Leonard smiled at her. "Sheldon likes Amy!" said Leonard.
Penny gasped and couldn't believe what she just heard. "Huh! Oh my god!?" she said.
Leonard tried to calm Sheldon down. "Okay Sheldon, why do you think that your emotions towards Amy are positively developing?" he asked.
"Well, I was having Cap'n Crunch cereal the other day and when I looked at my bowl, I briefly saw her face on it. I got scared and nearly threw the bowl away." said Sheldon making Penny more excited.
"Oh my god honey!?" she said clutching Leonard's arm.
Leonard smiled, slightly amused at his friend. "Alright Sheldon, you should relax. It's perfectly normal for you to feel these things. All you need to do is take a deep breath." He said.
"No Leonard! I can't relax. I don't like this and I was thinking of not seeing Amy anymore. That's why I came to ask for your help on how to end it with her." said Sheldon.
"Wait Sheldon. Before you end it with Amy, did she do something you don't like?" asked Leonard.
"No." Sheldon said.
"Well, did she say something to upset you?" Penny asked.
"No Penny. On the contrary, Amy has been doing things that I find very pleasing." said Sheldon.
"Like what?" asked Leonard.
"Well, last week she took me to the comic book store and got me the Limited-Edition Green Lantern Ring with light-up feature. She said that Green Lantern is one of her favorite super heroes, besides The Flash." said Sheldon. "The other day, I called her and was surprised that her ring-back tone was the theme to Super Mario Brothers game." Sheldon added.
"That's great right? It means you have something in common!" said Penny.
"No Penny. I feel like she's deliberately doing this to make me increase my feelings for her and this has to stop!" said Sheldon.
"Wait a minute Sheldon. Don't you think this is just a happy coincidence?" said Leonard looking at Penny. Penny understood the look Leonard gave her. She has to warn Amy to ease up a little bit or risk scaring Sheldon away.
"It's too good to be true Leonard. Did you know that she agreed when I asked her to drive me to the train store in Burbank which was an hour away?" Sheldon asked.
"Maybe it just means she likes spending time with you, or maybe she has nothing to do that day?" said Leonard trying to calm Sheldon down.
"He's right Sheldon." said Penny.
"Do you think so?" asked Sheldon.
"Yes Sheldon." said Leonard.
"Do you enjoy spending time with her?" asked Penny.
Sheldon thought for a while. "I guess." He said making Penny giggle.
"What do you think I should do?" asked Sheldon.
"Well Sheldon, if you really like her, you should make her feel special." said Leonard.
"Like what?" Sheldon asked.
"You know, like giving her flowers for example or asking her about how her day." Leonard said.
"Why would I be interested about how her day went?" asked Sheldon.
Penny sighed. "Because that's how you show her that you care for her." She said.
"Really?" asked Sheldon.
Penny was beginning to lose her patience. "Yes Sheldon." She said.
"Okay Sheldon, you said that you wanted to end things with Amy. Think about this, if you end it with her, how do you think she would feel?" said Leonard.
Sheldon shrugged his shoulder. "Well I guess she would feel sad about it." Sheldon said.
"And do you really want to make her feel sad?" asked Penny.
Sheldon sighed. "No." he said. "Penny can I ask you a question?" asked Sheldon.
"Yeah sure." She said.
"Did Leonard made you feel special?" asked Sheldon.
"Yes, and he still does." She said smiling at Leonard.
"How?" Sheldon said.
"Well, he always calls me and tells me he loves me. He always does things to surprise me and Sarah." said Penny.
"And you love him for that?" said Sheldon.
"Yes Sheldon." She said. "And we're not telling you to do what Leonard is doing. It should come from you, not because someone else told you to so." Penny said.
"Do you think Amy will agree if we engage in hand-holding?" asked Sheldon.
"How would you know if you don't try." Penny said.
"You're right." Sheldon said.
"Just relax Sheldon and don't think about it too much." said Leonard tapping him on the shoulder.
Sheldon nodded. "Okay. I guess I should be going now." said Sheldon.
"Alright. Do you want me to drive you home?" asked Leonard as he stood up and opened the door.
"No thanks. Amy is waiting for me downstairs in her car." Sheldon said.
Leonard and Penny were surprised. "What!? Do you mean to say that Amy is waiting downstairs in her car!?" asked Penny as Leonard hung his head.
"That's what I said." Sheldon said. "Anyway, thanks for the advice Penny. Bye Leonard." He said as he walked out the apartment and went inside the elevator, pushing the button.
The elevator door closed as Penny and Leonard returned to his apartment. "I'm telling you honey, your friend is one crazy whack-a-doodle." said Penny as they opened the door and walked inside.
"Well he is the only one of a kind." He smiled at her as they sat beside Sarah playing her game.
"Is uncle Sheldon alright daddy?" asked the child.
"He's fine honey. Nothing to worry about." said Leonard.
"Is it about aunt Amy?" Sarah asked Penny.
Penny sighed. "Your uncle Sheldon is just asking what kind of gift to get Amy." said Penny.
"Why not a brain model?" said the child.
Leonard was pleased with Sarah's suggestion. "That's a great idea honey!" he said.
"That is so thoughtful! Don't worry, we'll tell Sheldon your suggestion." Penny said.
"I like aunt Amy. She seems nice." said Sarah as she continued playing her game.
"We like her too sweetie." Penny said.
Later that night, Penny spent the night over at Leonard's place. They were lying on the bed, naked after making love.
"Honey?" said Penny.
"Hmm." said Leonard.
"Do you think Sheldon would do all those things we told him to do?" she asked.
"I don't know, but this is the first time I saw him react this way about a girl." said Leonard.
"I wonder how would Amy react when we tell her tomorrow?" said Penny.
"I'm guessing she would scream and shout." said Leonard laughing.
"Yeah. I wonder what she saw in Sheldon?" Penny said.
"Well, Sheldon is a weirdo, Amy is kinda odd so it's a match made in heaven!" Leonard said sarcastically.
Penny laughed and hit his chest lightly. "Jackass!" she said.
"We're kind of an odd couple too right?" said Leonard.
"Oh yeah? How come?" asked Penny.
"Well, we had sex even before we even went out on our first date. We don't go out on dates that much. I'm a single parent with a six-year old daughter. You're a beautiful, single independent woman, free to do whatever you want." said Leonard.
Penny turned to face him. "And now here we are, naked and in love. What's your point?" she asked.
Leonard pulled her close and kissed her. "Nothing honey. I love you!" he said hugging her tight.
"I love you too!" She said. "Hey before I forget, I asked the store if I could take a week off for Christmas and my boss agreed." She said.
Leonard was surprised. "Really!? That's great!" he smiled at her. "Why do you think they agreed?" he asked.
"Well, I only used my vacation days when you came back from the North Pole so I still have almost two weeks of vacation time left." said Penny.
"So, are we going to New York for Christmas?" asked Leonard.
Penny kissed him. "Yes Leonard. We're going to New York for Christmas!" she said.
Leonard hugged her tight. "I wonder what Sarah would do when we tell her?" he said.
"I won't be surprised if she breaks our eardrums with her scream." Penny said laughing.
"Thank you honey!" said Leonard.
"You're welcome sweetie!" she said.
"This is gonna be the best Christmas ever. I promise." Leonard said.
"I'm so excited!" Penny said.
"Me too." He said kissing her goodnight. "Let's get some sleep." Penny kissed her back and laid her head on his shoulder.
The next day, Penny invited Bernadette and Amy over to her place to catch up while having some wine and chips.
"So, Amy how are things between you and Sheldon?" Penny asked as she poured the wine in their glasses.
"It's fine I guess." Amy said as she drank her wine.
"Is there something wrong Amy?" Bernadette asked.
"Well, he called me asking how my day went." said Amy.
"What's wrong with that?" Penny asked.
"Nothing. It's just this is the first time that he did it." said Amy.
"It's a good sign right?" said Bernadette.
"I mean yeah but still, I'm a little worried." said Amy.
"What are you worried about?" asked Penny.
"That he is doing it because someone is telling him to do so." said Amy.
Penny decided to come clean. "Okay Amy, I invited you guys here because I wanted to talk about Sheldon." said Penny a little excited for her friend.
"Uh what are you saying Penny?" Amy said.
Penny drank her wine and looked at Amy. "Okay, Sheldon went here last night and talked to me and Leonard." She said.
"What did he say Penny?" Bernadette asked.
"He said, and these are his exact words, that his emotional 'condition' for you is developing into something positive." Penny told Amy. Bernadette giggled with excitement while Amy was speechless and her hands began shaking.
"He, he said that?" Amy asked finding it hard to believe.
"Yes. He said that he sometimes sees your face on stuff, like his cereal." said Penny smiling at Amy.
"Oh my god Amy! I'm happy for you!" said Bernadette.
"He told us that he wanted to break it off with you but Leonard convinced him otherwise." said Penny.
"What!?" Amy yelled.
"Don't worry Amy. It seems to be working right? I mean, him asking about your day was Leonard's suggestion." Penny said.
"Penny, I don't know what to say." Amy said trying to hold back her tears.
"It's alright Amy. Just dial down what you were doing because he's getting a little suspicious." said Penny.
"Oh? Okay." Amy said nodding her head.
"Yeah. He appreciates the Green Lantern thing and Mario Brothers but you have to be more subtle about it." said Penny.
Amy sat beside Penny and hugged her tight, surprising Penny. "Thank you Penny. It means a lot." She said.
"It's alright Amy. I'm really happy for you." said Penny feeling a little awkward.
"What do you think I should do now?" asked Amy.
"I don't know. Just don't do anything sudden because it might scare him." Penny said shrugging her shoulders.
"Okay. Got it." Amy said, a little excited.
