Chapter 68

"Oh my god honey! Congratulations!" Susan said, hugging her daughter tight after hearing the news that they're gonna have a grandson.

"I'm so happy for you slugger!" said Wyatt, hugging her daughter before shaking Leonard's hand. "God job Leonard."

"Thank you." Leonard said.

"So, are you excited to have a brother?" Susan asked Sarah.

"I am grandma...when he grows up, I'm gonna teach William everything I know about math and science." said Sarah.

"William?" Susan said.

"Yes grandma...daddy let me choose the name for the baby." said Sarah.

"Well in any case, I think it's a beautiful name." said Wyatt, winking at the young lady.

Sarah faced her parents."I told you it's a good name." she said.

"I know sweetie." said Penny as they sat on the couch to have some rest after coming back from the doctor's clinic.

"I still can't believe that I'm gonna have a son." said Leonard who can't wipe the smug smile off his face.

"I just hope you're ready Leonard." said Wyatt.

"What do you mean?" said Leonard.

"Well..." Wyatt said, hesitating a little bit and making Susan and Penny curious.

"What is it dad?" asked Penny.

"Yeah Wyatt...tell us." said Susan.

Wyatt took a deep breath. "Well...I was just thinking if Leonard is ready to have a son who has his brains and Penny's...'personality and charm'." said Wyatt, making Susan, Leonard and Sarah laugh.

"Oh god!" Penny said, putting her face on her hands. "What's so wrong with that?" she said to her father.

"I think grandpa has a point mom." Sarah said.

"Now you're taking their side?" Penny said to her step-daughter, making Susan and Wyatt laugh.

"Think about it...I mean, if William has your sassiness and dad's brain then it would be a dangerous combination." said Sarah, making them all laugh except for Penny.

"I can't believe I'm hearing this." Penny said, leaning back on the couch.

Leonard put his arm over her shoulder. "Relax honey...I'm sure our son is gonna be a good boy." he said.

"Then why are you laughing with them?" asked Penny.

"Because it was funny!" said Leonard, hoping his wife wouldn't be angry at him.

Penny slapped him on the arm before standing up and taking Sarah by the hand. "It may be funny for you, but it's not funny for me! Jackass!" she yelled before pulling the young girl upstairs to the bedroom.

Wyatt leaned back on his chair and took a drink of his beer. "Boy Leonard...I hope you're right." he said.

"About what?" said Leonard.

"About your son growing up to be a good boy...because I don't think you can handle two of them." Wyatt said, laughing a bit.

"Wyatt!?" Susan said, lightly hitting her husband's arm.

Later that night, Leonard came inside their bedroom, seeing Penny and Sarah already on the bed. He leaned over and kissed his girls goodnight, getting a little resistance form Penny who lightly pushed him away.

"Don't touch me Leonard." she said.

"Oh come on Penny...are you still mad about what your dad said?" he said as Sarah quietly looked on.

"Dad...mom's always mad at you." said Sarah, laughing a little.

"I'm sorry honey...I didn't mean to make fun of you." said Leonard.

Penny turned over and pulled Sarah, hugging her tight. "I'm tired Leonard...I just want to sleep." she said.

Leonard sighed, knowing that he has to make it up to his wife. "Fine..." he said as he stood up and turned off the lights before lying on his makeshift bed on the floor.

Sarah then rolled over, looking down on his father. "Good night daddy...don't worry, I'm sure you'll think of something to woo mom back." she said, laughing a bit.

"He can try." Penny chimed in.

Leonard reached up and held his daughter's hand. "Thank you honey...I love you so much...you and your mom." he said. "Now let's get some sleep so you can be early and help out your grandpa in the farm." he added.

"Grandpa promised we'll ride some more tomorrow." said Sarah.

"That sounds like fun...just promise me you'll be careful alright?" said Leonard.

"I got it dad...don't worry." said Sarah. "I'm not a baby girl anymore." she said, turning back over to face her stepmother.

"She's right...and a few more years this young lady would be worrying about having crushes and picking out the right dress, or the right color lipstick...right sweetheart?" said Penny, making Sarah laugh.

Leonard quickly sat up and looked at them. "Hey, that's not funny." he said, realizing that Penny has a point.

Penny gave him a smug smile. "Really? So you're worried about our son turning out like me when you haven't considered our daughter growing up and coming into her own?" she said.

Leonard took a deep breath. "Okay fine...let's just not talk about it for now, alright?" he said, lying back down on his sleeping bed.

"Jeez dad...I kinda feel that you don't want me to grow up and have my own life." said Sarah.

Leonard sat back up. "Honey...it's not like that." he said.

"Then tell me what it is." Sarah said, looking at her father.

Leonard sighed. "Okay honey...you are my daughter...I raised you...took care of you practically on my own...and I only want what's best for you...do you understand?"

"I do dad...but do you think I'd be happy if you keep treating me like a baby?" Sarah said, surprising her parents.

Penny leaned over and kissed her daughter. "Good job sweetie." she said.

"Aww jeez...I don't know...let's just get some sleep alright?" he said, lying back down on the sleeping bag.

"We got him mom!" Sarah told Penny, giving her a high-five.

"Now let's get some sleep while your dad ponders about the future." said Penny, making the young lady giggle.

Leonard turned over and tried to ignore his girls, knowing that he had no chance against them. He knew that Penny was right, that it was only a matter of time before his daughter would be independent from them and go through what life has to offer. He knew he can't stop change and only had to make sure to be there for his family, especially now that they're about to welcome his son into the world.

The next morning, Leonard woke up and saw that his daughter was no longer on the bed. He went to the window and saw his daughter with Wyatt, carrying some stuff for the animals in the barn.

"What are you doing?" Penny said absently.

"Why is Sarah up so early?" asked Leonard.

"She told my dad that she's gonna help him out in the barn today." Penny said, pushing her face onto a pillow.

"Oh...okay." he said. "Look honey...I'm sorry about last night..." he said. "I know we're both on edge because we haven't had any since we got here." he added.

"If you really want to make it up to me...then you better lock the door and take off your pants." said Penny, catching Leonard off-guard.

"What?" Leonard asked.

Penny turned over and looked him in the eye. "You're an idiot...what are you waiting for!?" she said.

Leonard quickly turned around and locked the door before joining his wife on the bed. "Sorry about that." he said, hurriedly taking off his pajamas.

"Shut up and come here sailor." she said as they got under the covers to make love. glad to have a little alone time away from their daughter.

After having a quick one, the couple got dressed and decided to go downstairs to join them in the kitchen for breakfast. They entered the kitchen and saw Susan finishing up preparing the table with Sarah helping her out while Wyatt sat on the table drinking his coffee and reading the day's paper.

"Good morning mom...good morning dad." Sarah said as she placed a plate of fried eggs on the table.

"Good morning sweetie." said Penny.

"Good morning honey." said Leonard, leaning over and kissing his daughter.

Susan looked at the couple and gave them a suspicious look. "You guys seem to be in a good mood?"

Sarah looked at her parents and saw what her grandma meant. "I think I know the reason why." said the young lady.

"We're just talking about some stuff." Penny said, hoping her stepdaughter doesn't embarrass them.

Sarah looked at Susan and gave her a smug smile. "They're just talking about some 'stuff' grandma." she said, making a quotation sign with her hands.

Susan and Wyatt laughed, understanding what the young lady meant. "Oh god!?" Penny said while turning her back from her parents and daughter.

Leonard took a deep breath. "Okay honey...you got us again...now why don't we have some breakfast, I'm sure your mom and your brother are getting hungry." he said while rubbing Penny on the back, knowing that their daughter is too smart for them now.

Sarah walked up to Penny and hugged her by the waist. "I'm sorry mom..." she said, giving her mother a sad look.

Penny sighed and smiled back at Sarah. "It's alright sweetie...now let's eat while the food is hot." she said, joining the rest of them on the table as they started to eat breakfast. Leonard for his part made sure that Penny and Sarah has their plates full, letting them know how much he cares for them.

For the rest of their two-week stay in Nebraska, Sarah spent most of her time with Wyatt in the farm, helping out in taking care of the animals and mostly riding Princess around the paddock. The couple chose to remain on the sidelines, watching and cheering on the little girl as she rode Princess, glad to see the young woman able to control the filly on her own without Wyatt riding beside her. Leonard looked at his wife and daughter and can't help but be thankful for their simple life, knowing that in the coming months, their life would completely change with the arrival of William.
