Summary: "Was it true?" he heard a feminine voice calling from behind. It belongs to a pink-haired young adult. Who was standing awkwardly, fingers connected and thumbs twiddling, "The thing you've told to Mausinger. Was it really true?"
.
.
Roland's head tilted slightly back, a smile (so plastic) adorned his younger-than-his-age-to-be complexion, "Why, Ms. Bracken. Did you put a wiretap on my armor?" She did upgrade his blue overall uniform before he infiltrated Ding Dong Dell, along with the assorted toys that could very well be weaponized, "According to my world law, or to be exact, Republic Act no. 4200, which prohibits and penalizes the use of any device or arrangement to secretly overhear, intercept, and record any private communica—"
"Do you really hate me, Mr. Roland?"
He clicked his mouth shut.
His thought went back to the day before. To the day he had to deceive the people precious to him. He stood in front of the audience, mouse circling him like a predator instead of the prey they were supposed to be. All while Mausinger looked down upon him with assured arrogance.
.
"After all that you've done, supporting that accursed child of a cat in building his accursed kingdom, you've chosen to come to me," he smirked. Voice unnaturally deep, it almost sounded like he's purring, "Why now, of all time? What did that child do to make you—you, someone who had been by his side since the very beginning—finally snap?"
.
"It wasn't you, or Zip, that I am upset of," Roland slowly spoke, leaning the crook of his neck to the wooden bench he had been sitting on for the last few hours, staring at the blinking stars on the vast night sky.
.
(Staring at a nuclear bomb that flew past by. Until there was an explosion and red coated his sight)
.
"It was Broadleaf's fault," Roland's eyebrows scrunched, fists were balled. So tight, it turned pale white. The mouse shivered when he saw pure hatred blared within those blue orbs. Burning those who were unfortunate enough to be the man's enemies in a cloak of fear, "They've created a weapon of mass destruction for the sake of their endless curiosity."
.
"Not again," his teeth chattered. Blood rolled down his temple as the environment around them crumbled. He didn't hear Batu's worried shout. Or Evan's concern plea. He only saw destruction and ruin. From the engineering city in this fantasy land to his own home. Everything blurred, everything coalesced. Victims dropped like mere flies, fire engulfed and licked the skin of every being, "Not again, not again, not again, not again—"
.
"I hate it. I hate how Evermore allied with those arrogant scientists. I hate—
.
"The legacy that you've left behind," Roland murmured. Past and present. Fake traitor and loyal advisor merged into one. Bracken's shoulders hunched as the man's voice petered off into a murmur, tear could be heard even if his eyelids are void of it, "You're lucky, Bracken. So, so lucky."
.
As roaring flame and whistling wind echoed, bricks and glasses shattered, causing a massive earthquake that was never have been felt before, Roland's trembling hand move forward. Trying to reach the figure of his bodyguards who had dutifully (futilely) protected the well-being of their president. He felt a tear pooled from beneath when no heartbeat welcomed him, cold descended like winter come early.
He managed to whisper, 'I'm sorry,'' (to his men, to his wife. To a son he left behind—) before the light shrouded in otherworldly magic enveloped him.
And then President Roland Crane is no more.
(A/N): I'm not Doloran, but even I can see the deception when Roland said he betrayed Evan for the sake of money.
Like, dude. Can you find something more believable as an excuse for your lie, gosh. Ni No Kuni 2 suck at drama :'D
Seriously, I can't believe they expand Roland's past in a freaking DLC. And without voice acting to boot too! -_-
So, here it is. A much better excuse (at least in my opinion) that makes Roland's betrayal look a lot more genuine :D
