"That wasn't me." Kovu said.
A woosh from above was the only warning before another roar came from the new arrival. Looking like a full grown lioness she sported bat wings from her shoulder blades and a scorpion tail. Spiky like hair ran down her spin and her claws looked like barbed fish hook ends.
"Corena!" Jokul greeted!
Roars, shrieks, hisses, and general chaotic sounds also called out in greeting. Kovu stared at the lion like creature and felt his heat start to beat faster, but not from fear.
Corena shook herself and smiled, even though all her sharp teeth were showing it looked pleasant. "Hello everyone! Hope I didn't interrupt." Laughter came from the crowd.
"No more than usual! How has your year been?"
"The same, territory guarding, hunting, and the occasional chance to use my poisonous sting." She turned her head and saw Kovu staring at her. "And who is this?"
Kovu ducked his head and tucked his tail between his legs. "I'm Kovu Miss."
"So polite. Is this your first Festival Kovu?"
The lion cub nodded his head.
"Then allow me to treat you to a performance you will never forget!" She bent her legs then growled as her voice built up in volume. She stood back up fast as a roar far louder then any of her others came from her throat. The silence after that was heavy with suspense. (1) "Call in all the monster, calling all the monsters, calling all the, calling all the, calling all the monsters."
No one escaped from jumping as her song broke the quiet. The monsters started to head towards her as she coaxed with her words, and the others in the audience did everything from tapping their feet to full out crazy hip hop dancing.
"Y-y-you stayed in too late to be getting afraid. This scene extreme! I-I-I-I'm gonna get you so scared. Gonna get your body shaking, wishing you could just awaken! Tonight all the monsters gonna dance."
By now the manticore was surrounded by the monsters of the festival and they all danced in step with her as she stacked and prowled.
Her voice gaining an edge of a hunter toying with her pray Corena and the monsters around her headed towards where Kovu stood. "You hid or you try, kiss tomorrow goodbye. We might just bite underneath the moonlight. More fun if you run, I-I-I-I'm already chasing!"
Kovu bolted off the sorcerer's staff and the group of predatory charterers gave chase their words clear in his ears. "We're wanting to. We're haunting you. We're wanting to."
Kovu found himself surrounded and Corena smiled again. "Gonna paint it red, get inside your head." Her scorpion tail struck the ground and sparked against the stones, flames started to spread. "Like a demon choir, playing with fire!"
Kovu leapt forward and stood in a pounce position. "Gonna get your body shaking. Wishing you would just awaken!" He sang.
Corena and him shared a smile as she lowered a wing and the cub climbed onto her head. "We're coming to get ya. We're coming to get ya! If your only dreaming, why do I hear you screaming? We're coming to get ya. We're coming to get ya!"
The song ended with a crescendo of all the monster letting loose a cacophony of sound! The waves of sound put the fire out and the sparks acted like confetti. Kovu's heart was a flutter.
Jakul smiled at the cub! His first crush! He thought.
