Song: Samhain Eve

By: Damh the Bard

Start song at (1)

Jokul had been holding Kovu when he felt the beings from the other sides presence. He knew them well, had actually been on the verge of joining them once. He noticed their stench on Facilier when he'd run into him trying to coax Kovu. He had followed the witch Doctor only to keep an eye out for trouble and keep Kovu safe, or so he told himself.

Jack was currently tucked away in his private 'room' of their shared mind, so he could see what was going on but not be a constant presence in Jokul's mind. He did this to give Jokul free rein, sense for most of the time the darker of the two was only an observer to things. It was a good compromise that they both agreed on when they had made the bonding pact.

But the promise of a body of his own! Jokul couldn't pretend it wasn't a tempting thought. For that is what the beings had offered him.

Now he was ashamed of himself because seeing the future that Facilier was promising Kovu and what it would cost the cub made him realize that the witch Doctor and his 'friends' promises always came with a price. So of course that was the time when the other siders decided to move in. They were feeding off of Kovu and himself and he had a sinking suspicion of what was going to come next.

Before their smoke could come to close Jokul lashed out with the wind. His movement turned him to his left and that is why he saw the portal. The smoke was pouring out of it and all of the festivals midnight goers were under its influence. Rage built in Jokul and his synth grew larger and more serrated, his clothes started to freeze and turn into the garments of his past glory days. His ears and teeth became pointier and his eyes took on a haunting look.

A good smack to the head dropped him and sent Kovu flying. The Lion cub shouted in surprise and fell into the arms of a young tan skinned teen about the height of Jokul. His orange hair and red crimson eyes would have been a terrifying combo if not for the kind expression on his face. "You alright there?" Kovu nodded and the teen put him down.

Jokul looked up and seemed to growl. The smoke that had snucked up on him, feeding off and using his rage to keep him distracted, swirled around and tried to latch onto him again. The teen shook his head; "Boy, is it a good thing Jack is safely tucked away right now. That's probably the only thing that is keeping the other side smoke from turning Jokul completely." Jokul seemed to hear those words for he looked around himself and hissed at the smoke. Then a wave of cold vaporized it and Jokul shook his head. "They got you good huh?"

"Yeah, I'm guessing that the smack to the head I felt was you?" Jokul said.

"Correct!"

"Um, sorry but...who are you?" Kovu asked.

"The name is Sam Hain. Guiding spirit of those lost on the other side. My job helps keep those nastys," Here he pointed to the masks that were trying to push through the portal. "From running a muck by helping the ones they trick get out of their deals."

Kovu's eyes light up; "Then that future me doesn't have to happen!?"

"Let me see your paw." Sam said. Kovu held it out. Sam took it gently and bringing a staff of his own into existence, waved the wood in front of his face. "Looks like we have ourselves a winner!" Kovu looked at his paw confused, it looked no different to him. "You didn't make an unbreakable pact, or accumulation of debt with the other side. My guess they just wanted to get you here so that they could use your energy to escape. That means that your good to leave any time, with a little help from me, of course." Sam stood up and turned to Jokul. "You on the other hand-"

"I know! But my bond with Jack stops them from taking me."

"A loophole worthy of well, me! But it doesn't completely exempt you. Your the reason that the portal is so close to being fully open. Your debt is the control of all those monsters, mythics, and spirits out there. You have to completely sever the agreement."

"How?" Kovu asked what Jokul had been thinking.

Sam Hain smiled. "Complete your end of the agreement."

"But I don't want what they have to offer any more!" Jokul slashed his hand for emphasis.

"That's a good thing, that means your end will be that much easier to give."

Jokul held a clenched fist to his chest. "I...I can't, I promised that I would never use Jack's powers in that way."

But we can. Jack's voice said, coming back to the forefront after leaving his private 'room'. I have a feeling that Sam has another loophole for us to exploit.

"Jack is right." Sam told him. "Time to get you out of your deal." He held out a hand.

Jokul still hesitated. Do I have to make the first move or are you? Jack joked. Finally Jokul took Sam's hand. The once ice prince lost all resemblance to Jack Frost as his real form took precedence. Then a transfer of abilities took place, some of Jokul's ice went to Sam while some of Sam's power over the other side went to Jokul.

"Now we are talking!" Sam said. "You got the song?" Jokul nodded as words and rhythm came to his mind. "Then let's guide them back shall we?!"

Kovu leaped into Jokul's waiting arms and the three exited the portal causing Facilier to look up startled. "What!? NO!" But the witch doctor could do nothing.

Sam waved his staff and the interments were enchanted to play on their own. (1) Their voices told the true beings under the mind control how to get free, and the power to guild reached those affected by the smoke. "Close the door to keep out the storm. Keep the need fires burning till dawn. Sing oh, leave my soul!"

The two used the ice to remove the smoke and the corrupt forms it caused started to be affected too. "The cold will come this night, frost will fall and ice will bite."

Jolul continued to send the command for the smoke to leave while Sam beckoned the trapped with: "Can you hear me calling you, can you hear me calling you! Can you hear me calling, calling your name in the dark!"

Then they switched places and Sam sang proudly: "The hunter of souls you shall see! On Samhain eve! I am the shadow that calls to your soul."

Some of the corruptions went easily but others rebelled against leaving their hosts. All of the k9 types lunged and tried to get at the two spirits. Sam just laughed. " I can hear the hunters hounds, so I will cast a circle round." Jokul and Sam did just that enclosing the k9's in a circle of ice. While they were doing so however the three Sanderson sisters flue up on their broomsticks to attack from behind. Sam just tutted. "Raven witch I feel your breath, bringing with you the smell of death. Sing oh, leave my soul." The circle glowed and light sprang from the ice to create a cylinder trapping the k9s and witches. The corruption continued to ice over as Sam and Jokul left the cylinder unharmed and unabided.

Every corrupted creature was now covered in ice and Sam raised his staff high, a bell appearing on top. As he tolled it the ice cracked and wisps of steam came out of them. The wisps drifted towards the portal and went through. The beings from the other side shrieked in anger as the barrier grew strong once again.

The spirits, legends, and mythics that had not been taken over by the smoke watched as their ice encased comrades were broken free and sat heavily on the ground once again themselves and in their right minds. The shattered ice glistened then melted leaving behind darkened pieces of husk, like the shed exoskeletons of cicadas, and everyone watched the images of the smoke's transformations being absorbed by the ground as Sam sang: "Fade away, become the feed of the seeds that will come in spring. Blessed are thee. And under the moon we shall sing!"

"No! No, no, no, no, no! Now how am I going to pay back my debt!" Facilier cried then looked at his 'friends' that were surrounding him. "Friends, friends, now just wait I have lots more plans! This is just a minor set back." The masks came closer looking hungry and angry. "I just need to wipe up another spell. Please just a little more time! I promise I'll pay you all back! I promise!" The portal started to close as Facilier backed away from the advancing beings. Then he looked desperately at Sam Hain. "Please help me! That's what you do right. Remember Jokul has to pay them still too!"

Sam waved his staff in front of himself. Then looked at Jokul and smiled. To Facilier he said: "Jokul's price was the powers of a thousand beings. Their own spell to create an army was made from Jokul's debt. By braking that spell on all those here and sending their corrupt energy back to the other side he did just that." His smile faded then as he continued. "You however have sunk too deep to be freed by a loophole, and all must pay in order for me to help."

"Then your just going to leave me here!" The portal was only big enough for Facilier's head to be just visible.

"I never leave a soul on the other side. But sometimes a soul is lost long before they cross over." He said no more as the portal closed to just the size of Facilier's right eye. Then it completely vanished.
