Hera found Chopper during the Clone Wars.

He was lying in a pile of wreckage, almost completely destroyed. She figured he'd belonged to one of the Jedi fighting on Ryloth. Her father had told her to leave it: he couldn't be fixed. She ignored him and brought the little droid home.

It took six months to fix him. Six months of searching the planet for mismatched droid parts. Six months of careful rewiring. Part of his processor came from a battle droid, which probably explained his... eagerness for battle. (Later Zeb would refer to him as a bloodthirsty maniac, but Hera never saw him that way.)

After her mother died she ended up spending more time with Chopper than she did her own father. Sometimes Chopper would tell her stories of the battles he had seen. She liked the stories about the Jedi best.

Chopper might have been grumpy, but he was loyal. When she left Ryloth to fight in the rebellion he came with her. For so long it was just the two of them, flying around the galaxy, doing odd jobs. Then she met Kanan.

When she met him he was in a bad place, but he saved her life. She saw something in him, she saw what he could be.

Chopper did not.

Chopper saw an intruder getting too close to his favorite person.

Chopper did not like Kanan.

At first Hera thought it was no big deal; Chopper was snippy with everyone. She was pretty much the only person he didn't hate. Him angrily beeping at Kanan or running into his shin was normal behavior.

But then one day Chopper "accidentally" electroshocked Kanan when he got close to Hera and she knew things had gotten out of hand. After she patched Kanan up she dragged Chopper out into the hallway.

"Alright Chop, what's up?"

Chopper beeped innocently, "Nothing."

"Bantha crap."

Chopper grumbled for a bit, "I don't trust him."

Hera frowned, "Kanan? Why?"

"He's bossy and grumpy."

Hera had to stifle a laugh at that, "You can't exactly get mad at anyone for getting grumpy Chop, what's really wrong?"

"He's too close"

"To what?"

"To you."

It took a moment for Hera to realize what was happening.

"Chopper Syndulla are you jealous?"

Chopper beeped a sullen, "Maybe."

Part of Hera wanted to laugh, but another part couldn't help but be a little flattered. Chopper acted tough but he cared more than most people realized.

"Look Chop, just because Kanan joined our team, doesn't mean I care about you any less. Our little family is just getting bigger, that's all."

"Are you sure I can trust him?"

Hera smiled at him, "He saved my life, I'm sure."

"I guess if you trust him... so do I."

Hera pat him on the head, "Thanks for giving him a chance."

"But the second he does anything shifty he is out!"

Hera laughed, "Sure thing bud, now go apologize."

Chopper rolled down the hallway grumbling. Hera couldn't help but smile at him. Maybe he and Kanan needed to go on a solo mission together, family bonding. She figured they would kill each other about five minutes in.

"What's up?" Kanan asked as she came into the cockpit.

"Nothing much."

"Really? Because Chopper just apologized to me, and that hasn't happened well... ever. What did you say to him?"

"He was just a little jealous."

"Of me?"

Hera nodded.

"Huh," Kanan said as he leaned back in his chair.

"He trusts you now, but he says the second you do something shifty he'll electroshock you until you pass out."

"Well there's a nice thought."

Hera laughed.

"Does this mean he'll be less grumpy now?" Kanan asked.

"Not a chance."
