CHAPTER 13
Kakashi woke up in the morning and saw the untouched sleeping bag on the other side.
'Naruto didn't return yet. He must be more upset than usual', Kakashi sighed.
At that point, Naruto entered with tea on his hand. Kakashi was wide-eyed.
"Good morning Kaka-sensei", Naruto sing-songed.
"Good morning Naruto. You are in a good mood", Kakashi could see that which was very different from what he imagined.
"Yup. I am, sensei", Naruto said and served tea for Kakashi.
"That's good then. But Naruto, about yesterday-", Kakashi started.
"It is ok sensei. I understand. Don't worry", Naruto said with a sincere smile.
That sincerity hurt more than Kakashi thought.
"It is not ok Naruto. What I did was wrong. I can't tell you why I was behaving like I used to. I want to tell you but I am not allowed to. But I can say this much. You remind me of my dead teammate. His name was Obito Uchiha. He was more like you, personality wise. He wanted to become hokage too. He died in a battlefield. He gave me his eye and that's how I got sharinghan", Kakashi said and no one talked for some time.
Naruto didn't think Kakashi would speak about Obito. Kakashi looked different today.
'It seems I am not the only one who attained enlightenment', Naruto was amused by his thoughts.
"But it was wrong Naruto. I was wrong. You are your own person and I shouldn't have done what I did. It won't happen again. I can't change in a single day and I just hope you give me a chance", Kakashi vowed and waited for Naruto's answer.
"Ok Kakashi sensei. But you should be serious about it. If you are not, I will not give up and nag you till your ears fall off", Naruto said and Kakashi laughed.
"I hope you will. Don't give up on me Naruto", Kakashi said in an uncharacteristic serious tone. If you listened deeply, you could hear a silent plea behind the tone and Naruto pretended he didn't hear it.
"I will not give up on you sensei. Don't worry", Naruto promised.
Naruto had no idea Kakashi held on to this promise and sailed through some dark incidents in future.
"You have to promise too sensei. That you will not give up on me when I stumble and fall down", Naruto said.
"I promise Naruto. I will always be there to help", Kakashi promised and ruffled the goldilocks of Naruto.
The atmosphere was warm and tranquil.
Having found assurance in each other, two lost souls finally found a light and moved forward bravely.
"Naruto-kun, Do you still want to become hokage? I don't hear you saying that after becoming a ninja?", Kakashi asked.
"Don't call me Naruto-kun. It reminds me of Teuichi jiji", Naruto made a face and Kakashi chucked.
"Do you want me to become hokage, sensei?", Naruto asked playing with his bracelet.
Kakashi eyed the bracelet and he could sense a faint chakra on it. He ignored it and answered Naruto.
"I don't want you to become anything you don't want to Naruto", Kakashi answered whole heartedly.
Naruto smiled at that.
"What if I don't want to be a ninja at all?", Naruto asked.
"As I much I would say I would support and help you, I can only support you Naruto. I can't help you. I feel ashamed as a sensei to say that but it is true. I don't have enough power to back you up. The village wants you to be a ninja and as much as I don't want you do to something you hate, I have no choice. But what I can do is to protect you through this life you didn't want and make it easier", Kakashi grimaced. He never felt frustrated as now at his lack of desire for power. Because he could be in a much better position in ninja scale if he desired. All he had to say was 'yes' to hokage's question but he refused.
Naruto smiled at him and soothed the frustrated Kakashi.
"Kashi sensei, you don't have to worry. I was just teasing you. I want to be a ninja. As for being a hokage.", Naruto didn't continue. He walked towards the window and leaned on the window sill viewing the outside world. He was warming the tea cup with chakra 2 cm above his finger like he did with kunai previous night.
Kakashi ignored his new nick name from Naruto and looked at the walking genin. When he looked at the tea cup levitating above Naruto's fingers he was surprised at Naruto's chakra control and found he misjudged Naruto's strength far more than it was. He pushed that thought back and waited for Naruto to continue.
"I want more than that sensei. I want to be more than just a hokage of Konoha. I want to surpass all of the hokages. I want to change Konoha for better. I want to unite all five nations and stop the unnecessary fights. I don't want ninjas to lose their life in vain. Ninjas fighting isn't going to stop. I just want to end meaningless fights. It may sound like an overkill, but I also want to protect the people not affiliated to the five great nations like this Wave country. I want peace sensei. I want to end this endless cycle of hatred".
Kyubi was listening to Naruto's words. 'Maybe, this brat is the one. There is hope'.
"Do I sound naïve?", Naruto asked a stunned shinobi who had seen so much death and hatred even by ninja standards. By product of being a best at his work.
The more Kakashi knew about Naruto, the more Kakashi was in awe of him. Kakashi couldn't help but think Naruto was better than Minato. He didn't think Naruto was naïve. If it came from any genin other than Naruto, Kakashi would find it naïve. But when Naruto said, Kakashi couldn't help but want to believe it.
"It is not naïve. I think you can do it", Kakashi affirmed.
"It is not going to be easy", Kakashi warned.
"I don't expect it to be", Naruto agreed.
"Then it is a good thing you are not alone huh?", Kakashi said and Naruto was surprised and looked at Kakashi still leaning on the window.
"Maa.. Why are looking so surprised? I just promised, didn't I? That I would always be there. Did you forget?", Kakashi said with a light on his grey eye.
"I know Kakashi sensei. It wouldn't be easy for you either. I just don't want to implicate you", Naruto said seriously.
"Anything is better than losing your comrades in meaningless fights. I want to stop it", Kakashi was serious too.
"You are betting on me? What if you lose?", Naruto asked.
"I have nothing to lose. And I am a great poker player if my fellow ninjas have anything to say", Kakashi joked.
"Konoha would not like this decision though", Naruto said.
"Sometimes you have to make bold decisions to rival old ideas. We keep doing same things gain and again and it doesn't work. It gets worse and I can see that now", Kakashi said while limping to the same window Naruto was standing.
"You might regret this", Naruto warned.
"As long as my comrades don't die and innocents aren't hurt, I won't regret it", Kakashi proposed.
"I am 12", Naruto countered.
"Good thing I have lot of time to train you and improve your skills."
"What if I say I don't want a sensei but a comrade?", Naruto asked scrutinizing Kakashi's reaction.
Kakashi was no longer surprised and had no doubts about Naruto's strength.
"Then you got one", Kakashi said.
Naruto chuckled and brought the tea cup for a 'toast'.
"To a bright and peaceful world"
Kakashi agreed and toasted.

Kakashi struggled for some time and opened his mouth. Naruto wanted to see what made Kakashi indecisive. It was unlike Kakashi.
"I have to tell you something Naruto. I should have told you sooner but I wasn't allowed to. But I think you are mature enough to handle it now. I understand if you blame me for not telling you sooner. It wasn't fair to you. It was about your lineage. It was about your parents. Your-", Kakashi mustered his much needed courage to reveal an SS-class secret but Naruto stopped it.
"Don't sensei. You don't have to", Naruto stopped Kakashi. It was enough for him to know Kakashi trusted him to reveal this information against hokage's orders. Kakashi was serious about supporting Naruto's dreams and Naruto's heart warmed.
'I have to live up to his trust', Naruto reaffirmed his goals.
"Naruto, don't you want to know about your parents?", Kakashi thought Naruto was desperate to know.
"I know what you are about to tell is against Konoha's rules. Kakashi sensei, when I said I want to change Konoha and asked for your support, I didn't mean for you to go against your belief. I am okay with you bending the rules for me. I don't want you to deliberately break the rules if not for saving lives", Naruto said and Kakashi was relieved. The relief came as a surprise to Kakashi. He thought he was ready to reveal it but he couldn't extinguish the voice that he was betraying his leader. He decided it would take some time for his habit to change.
Naruto made a split second decision and decided to remove his bracelet and the top of jumper. He jumped and sat on the window still with all his glory with his orange jumper draped around his shoulders not wearing them with the unworn sleeves drifting in air. He was wearing black shirt and orange pants and looked majestic in that posture facing Kakashi.
Kakashi was surprised to see the four feet chibi suddenly changing and reaching almost five feet. Naruto was the smallest on his batch but looking at now, he was the healthiest in his batch.
"Attention Kakashi", Naruto said and snapped his fingers that produced a sharp sound.
"I don't want you do anything you don't want do. Remember this, you can't build a trust with an act of betrayal. Don't betray yourself to trust me. I want to be a hokage my shinobis are proud of. I won't start by asking you to betray the ideals, especially when it is right. It would be an insult to my shinobis and me", Naruto said and Kakashi would lie if he said he didn't see his sensei for a second. He shook out of those thoughts. He was happy though. At this moment, he knew he made a right decision in trusting Naruto. He had no doubt Naruto would be a formidable leader in the future. Kakashi smiled unconsciously under his mask at the thought of serving his kage in future.
"Aren't you curious though, about them?", Kakashi asked.
"I would be if I didn't know", Naruto said and shrugged. He turned and sat on the window facing outside rather the room.
Kakashi stood rooted on the spot looking Naruto in disbelief.
"You know?"
"I know"
"But how?", Kakashi asked and reached the window sill. Naruto turned half way with one leg on the window and the other hanging outside. Kakashi came and stand beside him looking at his face.
"I look like him. The sculptor did a good job in carving his face and it confirmed my guess. And she has my last name in memorial slate", Naruto said and Kakashi was dumbfounded.
Kakashi really wanted to ask how he guessed but there was something more important to tell.
"They loved you so much. They were very happy when you were conceived. They expected your birth so much", Kakashi said with a nostalgia.
"I know", Naruto shrugged again looking at a large tree at a distance and Kakashi was getting slightly irritated now.
'What do you mean you know? Do you know how much courage it took me to tell those words?'
Naruto, sensing his irritation, decided to throw another bomb just for amusement. It was not every day you could make a formidable ninja feared across many nations, who single-handedly made Konoha fearful after nine tails tragedy, speechless.
"I know because he told me", Naruto said looking at Kakashi and Kakashi's was doubting he was still hallucinating from chakra exhaustion.
Naruto chuckled.
"When? How?", Kakashi really wanted to know.
"Your sensei left a piece of his chakra when he sealed kyubi in me for emergencies", Naruto said with a bitter tone.
"He explained some things and left. He told me I would see mom later too. I think there is another piece of chakra left", Naruto explained feeding Kakashi's curiosity.
Kakashi could not help but marvel once again at his sensei's ability in seals and his intelligence.
"That's good. I am glad you get to know him", Kakashi said.
"Don't be jealous. He didn't forget you. He told me to say 'hi'. Whatever that means. He also asked you not to brood much.", Naruto said.
Kakashi sensed something blocking his throat. Kakashi always maintained a distance with his teammates. He would come and stand there till Minato mentioned him or training started. Kakashi always made it to a point to make his existence invisible and kept his chakra fluctuations minimal after his father's incident so as not to be looked at and gossiped about. Only a seasoned shinobi could find him, not his genin teammates. So Minato made it a point for the teammates to greet each other with 'hi' every time they met to make Kakashi talk to them.
They wanted to shake hands but Kakashi didn't. So he maintained his habit of raised his hand to indicate his presence like when he was in academy when they check attendance. Kakashi got irritated with this and decided to rebel. He didn't want to say 'hi' and settled on 'Yo'. It was just an extension of Pakkun's grumpy 'Oi'. It was a pathetic rebellion in the history of rebellions. Kakashi wasn't proud of that but Minato sensei liked his 'yo'. He said it was unique, just like his unique student. In time, some deaths and one orange book later, Kakashi settled on aloof 'yo' which he maintained till date.
Kakashi recovered after a minute and remember the second part.
"Wait, I don't brood", Kakashi argued.
"You do", Naruto said.
"I don't"
"Whatever makes you sleep at night"
Kakashi realised he was arguing like a kid but he felt happy.
"He will be proud of you. I bet he told you that", Kakashi expressed.
"Well, I don't know about that. He told me he believe in me", Naruto said in an indifferent tone and turned outside fully again.
Something in Naruto's tone didn't sit well with Kakashi. Kakashi came and stood beside him facing outside too.
"Well. He is right", Kakashi agreed.
Naruto huumed in a non-committal tone.
"You don't sound happy", Kakashi stated.
"Well, I am not unhappy", Naruto settled.
"Do you blame him?"
"For sealing the kyubi in me? No"
"But?"
"I wish his concern for his son trumped the trust in his village and made adequate arrangements. He could have invited Tsunade to deliver me and Jiraya if the seal on mom were to loosen."
"What happened then was unexpected", Kakashi reminded.
"I know"
"He didn't mean any of this to happen"
"I know"
"But you are not happy with him"
"I know he is your sensei. But you can't make me not mad at him"
"I am not trying to. In fact, I am saying, I understand", Kakashi said and Naruto looked at him.
"White fang", Naruto stated.
"You know"
"I do"
"When did you meet your father?", Kakashi asked. He thought his sensei taught Naruto basics.
"I knew everything even before I met him. I was sharp. He didn't have to tell me anything. He didn't teach me anything", Naruto said understanding what Kakashi was implying and Kakashi winced. Kakashi thought his sensei might have something to do with Naruto's development.
"I am sorry Naruto"
"It is ok sensei. I was in between six and seven. Before the Uchiha massacre. I am not mad at your sensei for the reasons you think. I will reveal it when the time comes."
Kakashi noted down the detail and decided to ask later about it.
Naruto chuckled suddenly and Kakashi looked at him. Naruto looked at him too.
"We are both alike huh? You have father issues with my hero and I have father issues with your hero. A mom who loved us dearly but we never got to know. Never given a choice about being a ninja. Lonely childhood, nagging sensei who mean well, teammates who are living in a different world than you, you got your ninkens to save you when you are at your end and I got a fox who saves me whenever I am at my end"
Kakashi chuckled and agreed too.
"But we also have our differences", Naruto said.
"And kami, I am glad for it", Kakashi said.
"Hey….I know my life is pathetic but it was rude to point it", Naruto joked.
"I didn't mean it and you know it", Kakashi rolled his single eye.
"The differences are what make people what they are. When people appreciate each other differences and make room for it, we can lessen lot of violence", Naruto pointed out.
"You don't sound your age"
"I was forced to grow up"
"How are your ninkens?", Naruto asked and Kakashi got a metaphorical whiplash at sudden topic change. Kakashi would be amused to know later that it was because Naruto saw a dog shaped cloud in the sky.
"They are good. They might have bullied me into apologizing you"
"At least, they are sensible"
"They really are". Kakashi told suddenly remembered something.
"They sneaked in to check on you when you were young"
"Pakkun isn't as sneaky as he thinks. Bull snores like thunder. Bisoke still needs training. Akino and Guruko should argue less", Naruto said casually.
Kakashi was surprised Naruto knew their names. Well, he knew his dogs and boy they love to talk. And Naruto's comprehension levels are high. He could reason their names from their conversation.
"I will tell them that"
"Don't. Just tell them thank you"
"Hmm.. They said they followed you outside Konoha"
"I didn't mishear Bisoke then"
"They said you were working", Kakashi swallowed not knowing how to ask Naruto not to work anymore and he would help if needed without offending him.
"You don't have to worry about that. I don't work there anymore"
Naruto understood Kakashi's thoughts not having to look at him. Both were still not facing each other. The companionship without intimacy felt comforting. They each had their space but not alone.
"It wasn't about money. Not anymore. It was when I started. It was more about connections."
"Oh"
"I needed some things that Konoha would not sell me. I can get there. My connections will buy it from outside and deliver"
"You don't have to go there anymore. I will help."
"I already quit the job before this mission. Thanks for suggesting but since we are taking C-rank missions, I can get them when we come out."
"Well, if anything is urgent, let me know"
"I will hold on to that"
"Anything I can do to help"
"I do need your help with something."
"Sure"
"I want you to oversee the jutsus I mastered before you recover. I am self-taught and all my improvements are up to my comprehension. A second eye would help"
"I will supervise"
"After you recover help me with dispelling other's genjutsu and to perfect the genjutsu I have created"
"You can do genjutsu? You shouldn't be able to", Kakashi was curious and peeked at his student, or future hokage in training.
"Well, it took lot of effort than other jutsus, thanks to the imbalance in chakra"
"I will help you", Kakashi told him.
"You must know your affinities", Kakashi had no doubt Naruto would know.
"Wind, water, lightning and earth. Earth being secondary", Naruto answered.
"You already got your secondary affinity?"
"Honestly, I can use fire too if I want. I try not to use it inside Konoha to avoid suspicion"
"All five affinities? Incredible!"
"I have other skills too. That is for later"
"I am looking forward to it"
"Sensei"
"Hmm"
"Isn't earth your secondary affinity? Help me to master it."
"Do I even want to know how you know about my affinities?", Kakashi asked exasperated.
Naruto chuckled and answered mischievously, " I painted hokage mountain in broad daylight and it took couple of hours for konoha ninja to find it and another couple hours to find me. I was never once caught by ANBU. So, you guess"
"Konoha deserved it", Kakashi approved.
"On serious note, ANBU are not good after you left"
Kakashi suddenly became tense and Naruto sensed it. So, he changed the topic.
"So, will you teach me?"
"Of course I will", Kakashi was grateful for that save.
"Thanks sensei"
"No need. It is what I should do as your sensei"
"Don't let council hear it", Naruto joked.
"To hell with them", Kakashi scorned.
"That is what I am going to do. Just bear them for a little longer"
"You have a plan"
"Had. But postponed it to later due to certain unexpected factors"
"Can't believe you were going to deal with them", Kakashi was never satisfied of Naruto than at the moment but felt concerned he was going to do something dangerous. Alone.
"That was the plan. Even a genius like you, didn't expect it. How could they?"
"You have been preparing for a long time"
"Not well enough. They are more dangerous than the third and ninja clans believe"
"Danzo?"
"Not just him. I will need you later to crush them. If my plan is right, you would be the trump card to unroot them", Naruto stressed the root part and Kakashi got the message.
"ROOT? So he hasn't disbanded it."
"It is more than that. Let it be for now. We don't have the strength to face them now"
"What else?"
"If I say lord third might not be as perfect as you think what you would say?", Naruto tested.
"I would say you are damn right", Kakashi was glad to know Naruto could see it too.
"I do love that old geezer but man, he screwed up. He did a lot and whole lot of nothing"
"I am seeing it now"
"Not as much as I would like", Naruto added.
"I assume there is more"
"I don't want to say it now. It might alter your views on Konoha and question all your sacrifices"
"I have to face it someday", Kakashi pointed out.
"For the sake of keeping our masks a little longer, you will have to wait", Naruto indicated the reality.
"Well, I agree. Someone said I am not a good liar as I think I am", Kakashi kidded.
Naruto laughed at that, "It is not that you are bad, I am better. As a pro actor myself, I could see it"
"Was it hard? Not showing your appearance, strength, skills and more importantly, your sadness for decades, it must be hard", Kakashi tone was serious.
Naruto didn't answer and Kakashi didn't expect one. He was just stating a fact. Neither of them were facing each other. And the morning breeze was oddly soothing on their skin adored with healed wounds and hidden scars.
"I am used to it", Naruto replied after some time.
"I can see it"
"Because you are like me"
"Other than council, anything you are dealing with right now?", Kakashi avoided Naruto's statement.
"If you know about it, you might have to report it to your hokage. Knowing less is better", Naruto teased.
"I am pretty sure what I know now must be reported too", Kakashi played along.
"Are you going to?"
"What would you do if I report it? It is obvious you have been fooling entire Konoha"
"Wanna fool your enemies? Fool your friends first. As for what I would do if hokage is notified, I have my ways. It is a hassle but nothing I can't get out of", Naruto said casually.
"You saw it coming huh? Well, I am not going to report it"
"I know. It is not long now. I will reveal myself soon. Lord third has taken me for granted. I want him to squirm and blurt out everything", Naruto said with a plan forming. He was waiting for a crucial piece of information.
"Only you would talk about making a kage squirm", Kakashi was interested to see third hokage squirm.
"Probably", Naruto grinned and Kakashi laughed out.
"Call me. I want to see that scene"
"Oh certainly. I was hoping you would come", Naruto smirked.
Naruto returned to the present issues.
"Zabuza will take another week to recover. The hunter-nin is treating him. Gato isn't happy with Zabuza. He is a shitbag and this Wave country is in worse condition than Tazuna mentioned. He has goons in his base. What are going to do with the other two ninja wannabes of our team? They can't handle this mission."
"Train them. I am going to start with tree-walking. Sasuke will most probably explode with jealousy if he knew you can walk on water if he bothers to remember the earlier encounter with Zabuza", Kakashi imagined his emo student fuming with jealousy.
"I reduced his visibility during the encounter with Zabuza. If emo doesn't remember I will send my clone to keep doing what my fool side would do. Challenging him, nagging him and try to get through to him and I would train separately far away. If he remembers, send me for bridge duty to protect Tazuna stating I don't have to train.I will tell Iruka-sensei taught me and go to bridge and train far away. I will keep up the façade of being a dead-last either way", Naruto comforted.
"That would be great. I am not sure about Sakura though", Kakashi voiced his concerns about his civilian born student.
"You can't make the decisions for them Kakashi. Just train her to increase her chakra reserves now. She shows her insecurity into bulling people but inside, she is scared. Her fangirl nature might be due to her mother's desire to have sharinghan power. She would have advised Sakura to pursue Sasuke", Naruto mentioned the problems accurately.
"Sometimes it is easy to forget you are 12", Kakashi said.
"You brood so much I think you are 12", Naruto mocked.
"You, knucklehead", Kakashi and Naruto laughed and teased each other.
Kakashi was the one who reeled back this time.
"Anyone else other than Zabuza might make a move here?", Kakashi questioned.
"I noted some chakra signatures but I think they will wait until Zabuza gets defeated", Naruto responded.
The picture portrayed by one ninja with a jumper around his shoulders sitting on a window facing the world and a another ninja standing beside him with his hands in pocket standing firm facing the world, was like two war generals with mutual trust and similar goals discussing the plans for the future of their country. If they planned their own future unknowingly, it was an added bonus neither of them were aware now.
They didn't know this picture would be seen often in the future in Konoha's hokage room. They would not have imagined at this moment, this particular picture of their faces looking over the world side by side would be carved in Konoha's hokage mountain, always keeping each other company, even as faces in a mountain, in future. But it was not a wonder that two extra-ordinary ninjas with broader vision would become hokages in the future.
"It is not good to take our team there. I might have to call back up", Kakashi said apologetically after thinking. This might intrude Naruto's plan to train freely.
"Don't have to. I am your back up. If worse comes to worst, I will henge into a random loose-nin and kill them", Naruto said and yawned.
Kakashi pondered Naruto's casual words grimly.
"You have killed before", Kakashi concluded.
"I have", Naruto confirmed.
"How many?"
"Less than ten"
That didn't make it easier for Kakashi. Naruto could see Kakashi wasn't taking it very well.
"I didn't kill innocent people"
"That is not what I am worried about. I just didn't want you to face the life of ninja this soon"
"You mean you didn't want me to be a killer this earlier in my life", Naruto said undoing the sugar-coating and Kakashi flinched.
"Yes"
"I wasn't given a choice. Don't worry Kashi sensei. I want to be a hokage. I want to command ANBU to do assassinations. How can ask my shinobis to become killers if I don't know the responsibilty myself? I can ask ANBU to assassinate gruesome criminals only but it would be a murder nonetheless. How can I ask them to do it that if I don't have any idea how to feel like a killer? And, I want to change the current ninja system. How can I do that if I don't know how it works? You can't clean trash by keeping your hands clean. I can't take away the pain of ninjas if I don't understand what they are going through. To become a leader you should be a better soldier", Naruto stated grimly remembering his first kill.
"I hate killing but sometimes-"
"I know. I am sorry I wasn't there to make it easier. I wish I was there to comfort you. First kill isn't easy. It changes you at a deeper level", Kakashi apologized.
"I wasn't alone", Naruto said reminiscing a past.
Kakashi couldn't help but feel bitter someone took away the chance of him showing Naruto lot of things. He was beginning to see why Naruto said he needed a comrade rather than a sensei. Naruto didn't need someone to teach. He needed a sparring partner. Naruto was already at ordinary jounin level and Kakashi suspected Naruto could take down some ANBU too.
But he was more intrigued to know who Naruto was with during his first kill.
"Who was with you?"
Naruto could see Kakashi was curious. There was no harm in telling him.
"Believe it or not, it was an Uchiha"
"Uchiha, who?"
"Shuishi Uchiha"
"Shunshin no shuishi?" It also mean Naruto was around five or six at that time, Kakashi ignored that information conveniently.
"The one and only"
"He held me till the horrible feeling passed through and drilled into me it didn't make me a demon"
"He was right", Kakashi was grateful to Shuishi.
"He was great", Naruto agreed.
Kakashi hummed and stood in silence.
"Well, your students are waking up. Another day of emo and pinkie. All the best", Naruto announced feeling joy in Kakashi's distasteful expression.
