Yōkai Academy's Newest Faculty
Chapter 1: A New Assortment of Weirdos
It was a familiar crunch of dry leaves underneath his feet as Tsukune walked his way from the dorms. After the Newspaper Club's trip to the human world only a short time ago, he couldn't help but notice even more how much this world was trapped in an endless autumn.
"Ah…!" Tsukune winced at the sudden sting coming from underneath his uniform, causing him to gently hold his side. He paused for a moment, giving time for the pain to pass. It wasn't as bad as it was before but it was still too soon to remove the bandages.
What had started as a simple summer break for their club had turned into a nightmare, with the lot of them almost being eaten by carnivorous plants and facing down a pair of witches extremely more powerful than his friend Yukari, whom was also of the same species.
Tsukune couldn't help but feel a little in envy of his friends right now. Save for Moka, whom took a fuller brunt of the onslaught, all of them had received about the save level of injuries, and yet in such a short time none of them had even a scratch left on them, while he was still in this state almost a month later. He had to assume it was just a simple fact that, no matter the type or species, monsters in general healed far quicker than humans.
"Then again, I suppose I should be grateful this is only as bad of shape as I am." He thought to himself as he looked up lazily at the sky through the many barren tree branches.
Before they'd even met the true witch of the knoll, Ruby had tried to kill him. In fact, she would have, had Moka not saved him with a transfusion of her own blood. With the temporary power of the vampire flowing through him, the lethal would Ruby had inflicted upon him heal instantly and he was even strong enough to be the one to finally knock her out. At least, he was pretty sure of that part. Coming down from that transformation left him with scattered memories of what'd happened, varying with how near death he'd been before he changed. He still remembered nothing more than brief flashes from his battle with Kuyō; images that felt more like something he'd dreamt rather than anything solid.
"Another transfusion probably would have fixed these wounds up too." Tsukune remarked to himself as he lifted his arm back up, the stinging having subsided. "But…no. It's out of the question."
His best friends were monsters. Every day he was surrounded by monsters. Almost every week he found himself being attacked by some new monster and then saved by other monsters. Less and less he was seeing the differences between humans and them and he was grateful for that. But still, he wanted to remain human.
The wind picked up a little, as evidenced by the swaying branches, and Tsukune had to block his eyes with his forearm to keep the dust from flying into them, another thing he'd gotten used to doing in this eternal fall season.
When it died back down, Tsukune lowered his arm along with it.
And when he did, there he saw a girl, just a short distance away.
Tsukune blinked a few times, like he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. He was certain she hadn't been there before and there's no way he could have missed her. Not with that hair. Long and tied into a ponytail, it was sliver, quite the uncommon color for someone who looked to be around his own age, if not a little younger. It wasn't just how much it stood out against the backdrop of the dark forest around them. Its shade was so uncannily similar. For just that brief second, Tsukune had thought the inner Moka had appeared before him.
The girl had her back to him at first, seeming unaware of his presence. However, soon her head slowly perked up, like she'd finally noticed Tsukune staring in awe at her, and turned her head to see him.
"Hm? Oh, I see. A student."
It took Tsukune a moment to realize it himself but after he felt her eyes going across his jacket he realized she was wearing the same. She was dressed in the uniform of Yōkai Academy, just as he was, save for the difference of a skirt instead of pants, as was required for the female students of the school.
Smiling softly at him, the girl gestured her hand at Tsukune. "Please, boy. Come closer. Perhaps you'll be able to help me."
"Boy?" Tsukune thought at the odd comment. Again, looking at her from face on like this, he was even more certain than before that he was older than her. Still, he decided against making a fuss over it and did as she asked, walking forward to where she stood waiting.
It was only once they were nearly face to face that Tsukune gave a sudden pause. Struck frozen as soon as he finally saw it.
Her eyes. There was no mistaking it from this close. They were a demonic shade of crimson, with pupils that were vertical slits, much like that of a predator.
He'd seen Moka's transformation when her Rosario was removed too many times to ignore what was in front of him now.
This girl…
Was she…
Was she really another vampire?!
Seeming to ignore the look of shock on Tsukune's face, the girl moved forward to him, holding up a slightly folded piece of paper. It was a map of the campus. "Is this the path towards the main building? I'm afraid navigation is not a particularly strong suit of mine."
Tsukune came back to reality as she asked that question to him. Weirded out as he was, she was still being very polite to him and it'd probably be rude for him to pry too much, especially as revealing one's true nature was against school rules.
"Yeah, that's right." He said, leaning forward to point his finger on her map. "The way behind me leads back to the dorms, but if you keep following this path and turn here you'll see the building pretty easily."
"Ah, I see. That is very helpful. Thank you." The girl said, lifting her head up as he could almost see her applying the map to her surroundings in her head.
As she folded the map back up, Tsukune asked "Are you a new student? I don't think I've seen you around before. Oh! I'm Tsukune Aono, by the way." He added, remembering his manners.
The girl gave a short chuckle, like she found his words amusing. "Oh? Giving our names, are we? How presumptuously forward."
"Presumptuous?"
"But very well. My name is Shalltear. Shalltear Bloodfallen."
"Bloodfallen?!" Tsukune felt like he was being pranked. A name like that, along with her appearance, it was like she was practically trying to scream to the world that she was a vampire.
"And yes, to answer your question, I am a recent transfer. Things didn't work out at my old school and I was allowed to come here, despite it being so late in the semester."
"I see. Well, it's nice to meet you then." Despite nearly all of his friends being girls, Tsukune was still a little unused to knowing how to properly speak with the opposite sex for a first time greeting and thus his words came out a tad awkwardly.
"Now, please, answer a question of mine. Why were you staring at me in such an odd way? Am I truly the only pretty face you've seen around here?"
"Oh!" Tsukune rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment, giving a small nervous laugh. "Sorry about that. I thought you were someone else at first." He quickly apologized with a small bow of his head, not wanting to seem like a creep.
"Is that so?" Shalltear said calmly enough, though as he raised his head back up, for a quick second he thought he saw a smirk.
The next thing Tsukune knew his head was suddenly forced back down onto eye level with the smaller student, Shalltear's hand around his jaw being what pulled him.
"Her grip…it's like steel!" His mind panicked as his body tried in complete vain to get itself free. No matter how much he struggled his head was firmly locked in place, unable to turn or move an inch while she showed not even the slightest bit of effort in keeping him there.
Faces so close she could feel his short rapid breath against her skin, Shalltear looked deeply into his eyes. "Hmm… You do seem to have quite the honest face. Innocent at that, too. It's a shame Solution isn't here. She would have loved you." She gave a dark chuckle at whatever she was imagining, causing Tsukune to break out into a cold sweat.
Her expression then changed, her eyes going slightly wider in surprise before closing, as Shalltear started sniffing the air.
"That scent…" She said, so distantly, like she was lost in it. Her eyes opened back up and pinkness slowly crept across her pale cheeks as she looked at Tsukune. "Oh my… For such an average looking creature, that is quite the pleasant smell you've got." She said to him, almost seeming shy over it. Scratch that. Given how hard she was starting to breathe, if Tsukune didn't know any better, he'd almost think this girl was getting turned on! "It smells almost like…"
Raising her free hand up to his face, Tsukune gave a wince as he felt a quick slice go across his cheek. It stung only for a second and soon he felt the wetness of blood start to slowly run down his skin.
"Ohhhhh yes. That's what I like to see." Shalltear practically growled as she leaned in closer, letting the smell envelop her nostrils.
What happened next was what froze Tsukune solid. If Shalltear was a vampire, it'd make sense she'd want to drink his blood. At the very least, get a taste of it, which she did as Tsukune felt her wet tongue slide across his cheek.
However, her face wasn't right next to his. They weren't close enough for any normal tongue to reach him.
And at the struggling turn of his eyes, that's when he saw it; Shalltear's tongue sliding out of her mouth, almost a full foot in length as it took a long, savoring lick of the blood rolling down his face.
"What…the…! This girl…! She's gonna…!"
Shalltear's eyes then bugged out of her skull, finally seeming to realize what she was doing.
The instant she let go of his jaw, Tsukune fell over backwards, right onto his rear, while Shalltear's hands clapped themselves over her cheeks bashfully.
"Oh my, do forgive me. I don't usually lose control that easily." She cooed, swaying her hips like she was embarrassed. "You have very delicious blood. Just that one little taste and I was nearly about to drain you dry."
Tsukune could just barely make out what she was saying. His heartbeat was still pounding in his ears and his body was having trouble taking in air, like it couldn't believe he was still alive.
Having recomposed herself a bit, Shalltear looked off absentmindedly into the distance. "Nearly revealed myself there. Even if I silenced him that'd still be basically announcing I made such a huge screw up on my very first day. That damn gorilla would never let me live it down." She mumbled off bitterly to herself.
After taking a moment to think over her options, Shalltear turned back to Tsukune.
"[Charm Species]."
Her voice echoed in his ears. As the world momentarily rippled around him, Tsukune's fear of Shalltear slowly faded away, replaced by a feeling of growing warmth in his heart. For the life of him, he couldn't remember why he'd been afraid of her in the first place.
Shalltear knelt down to be on a more even level with Tsukune. "You'll keep this little incident just between us, won't you dear? It would cause me a lot of trouble if it got out."
"Uh, yeah. Of course." The words left Tsukune's mouth before he even had a chance to think about them. "What are friends for, right?"
Shalltear smiled almost mockingly at his words, though to Tsukune it was almost endearing. "Yes, we are friends, aren't we?" She giggled in amusement, partially covering her mouth to suppress the much greater urge to laugh that was crawling up her throat. "By the way, you really should refrain from comparing one girl to another. Some women might take issue with that."
With that, Shalltear lifted up her skirt only slightly and gave a small bow.
"Fair thee well, Tsukune Aono. I do hope that we meet again, once I've been granted…permission."
With that, it was like Shalltear simply vanished, disappearing from sight just as quickly as when she'd arrived in that gust of wind.
For the next few minutes after, Tsukune simply stayed sitting in the middle of that path where he was, neither his eyes nor his ears registering to anything that was around him.
Another minute more and his eyes dilated back to their normal size before blinking a few times. Tsukune looked around at the trees surrounding him, completely lost on why he'd just been standing here for so long.
"What just happened?" He uttered to himself in confusion, his memories of the past five minutes feeling just as fuzzy as one of his vampire transformations.
"Tsukune!"
Tsukune stopped his walk as soon as he heard the voice behind him. Not simply because it'd called his name but rather it was a voice he could never fail to recognize.
Turning around and every bit of the confusion and unease he'd been feeling since that encounter was simply forgotten about as soon as he spotted that long hair flowing behind her. The color of cherry blossoms and impossibly more beautiful than even an entire field of them.
"G-Good morning, Moka!" He greeted her, his face as warm as it always did when she was around him.
"Good morning, Tsukune!" She greeted him back, her smile brighter than the sun itself to her friend. "Sorry I'm late. I had a lot of trouble getting out of bed this morning. I'd probably still be there if inner me didn't make such a big fuss about it." She apologized tiredly, making her hair messy as her hand ran across her scalp.
Tsunuke smiled back at her and his eyes lowered themselves down to the Rosario attached to the choker around her neck. The jewel in its center seemed normal right now but there were times he could swear he could see an eye; a very familiar one using the Rosario as a window to look at the outside world. While he himself had never heard it, Moka had told him that whenever her other personality would talk to her, her voice always seemed like it was coming from the Rosario.
"It's fine." Tsukune assured her. "I actually just got here myself."
It was then that Moka noticed the cut on his cheek. "Oh no. Did your wounds reopen?" She asked worriedly, placing her hands on his face to see how deep the gash was. As soon as she did, Tsukune felt his internal temperature skyrocket.
"No! No, no, no! This has nothing to do with that!" He said way louder than he meant to, unable to think straight with Moka so close and touching him. "My injuries have been healing up great! This cut was from… From…"
Tsukune blinked at himself. Try as hard as he did, he couldn't quite remember where he'd gotten the cut from. He knew it had to be less than ten minutes ago but for the life of him he couldn't put any of the images together in his head. It was like everything was scattered.
Moka herself gave a small pause, noticing how quiet he'd had just become. "Tsukune?"
"Hm? Oh! Sorry, Moka. I guess I just spaced out for a moment there."
Her eyes showed that she wasn't quite convinced there wasn't more to that. However, as her thumb traced across the cut on his cheek, having been mostly clotted up by now, Moka's expression changed to become a bit more hesitant. "Um…Tsukune?" She asked him shyly.
Tsukune felt his throat grow instantly parched as she looked at him like that. "Y-yeah?"
She didn't spit it out right away, looking slightly off to the side. "Well…you see… I was running so late this morning that I didn't get a chance to eat breakfast, and inner me said the reason I was so sluggish is probably because of my anemia. So…" She looked back up at his face with pleading eyes. "Do you think…it'd be alright if…?"
Tsukune's face grew ever hot, unable to even see properly anymore with how excited and nerve racked his body was becoming.
And then…he remembered how this usually went, as it wasn't his lips she was going anywhere towards.
"Wait… You don't mean…?" He asked nervously as his finger slowly pointed up to his neck.
That being all the permission she needed, Moka lunged forward as she couldn't hold her hunger back any longer. "Thank you!" She cheered lovingly as her fangs sank into his throat, Tsukune soon feeling his blood being quickly drained from him like a squeezed orange.
Despite what many might think, a vampire's bite actually didn't hurt that badly. The initial penetration certainly stung but after that the area usually became numb to all pain. Vampires kept their secrets pretty close to the chest but Yukari once told him the common theory among other monsters was that vampires had a small paralyzing agent in their saliva, as their prey would fight back at lot more during feeding if it hurt and make it far more difficult for them to enjoy their meal (quite the dark thought, given how often these moments happened between the two of them).
Finally, after a full minute, Moka's fang popped out from his skin and she released Tsukune from her hold.
"You're the best, Tsukune!" She thanked him from the bottom of her heart, her skin practically glowing from its restored color and health.
Tsukune, by contrast, more greatly resembled a mummy than the able-bodied human he'd been just a short time ago. He could barely stand on his own two feet right now and were it not for Moka's arms around him he probably would have already collapsed. "No…problem…Moka…" He wheezed out from his dried up features, trying to sound tougher than his body was capable of showing at the moment.
Realizing what she'd done to him, Moka panicked a bit and helped him to stand up straighter. "S-sorry! You're already injured. I should have waited until you were recovered more."
Tsukune shook his head. "No, really, Moka. It's fine." He assured her as his lightheadedness was thankfully fading first. As unhealthy as it probably sounds, she'd drank his blood enough times to where he was used to the aftereffects and for the most part could recover quickly from them, so long as Moka didn't drink a life threatening amount, which she'd thankfully yet to.
Their usual comedy duo act out of the way, the two walked along beside each other, neither admitting aloud this was their favorite part of any given school day.
Tsukune could still feel the slight burn of the cut on his cheek. The bleeding was slowly starting to plug up already (or maybe Moka had simply decreased the amount he had to be leaving him) but his awareness of the injury was still active, having little else on the walk to distract his thoughts from it. And with it his mind started to wander back to…that girl…
Why? Was it because he'd gotten the cut after she left? No… No, it was before they met, right? But that didn't feel right either.
"Hey, Moka," Tsukune spoke up as they walked, regaining her attention. "You haven't heard anything about another vampire transferring to this school by any chance, have you?"
"Another vampire?"
Tsukune nodded. It was a question he slightly hesitated to ask. After all, it was probably a little insensitive. He didn't know every human so it was doubtful every vampire knew each other. But perhaps as the school's only vampire maybe the headmaster might have asked Moka to help the new student feel more comfortable settling in. "Yeah, it was some new girl I'd never seen before on the path here. She said she was a transfer and she seemed really interested in my blood." He explained, finding it both odd and not odd at all that he couldn't bring himself to mention her tongue.
Moka froze in her tracks for a moment, causing Tsukune to stop too. "Did… Did she have brown hair? Kind of orangish, tied up into pigtails like this?" She asked very shakily, holding her hair up into a very anime-girl style of pigtails.
"Actually, her hair was silver, a lot like inner Moka's, and it was tied into a ponytail."
It was to his surprise how large of a sigh of relief Moka let out. "Oh…thank goodness." She said breathlessly, having to put her hands on her knees to keep herself standing.
"Is there someone like how you're describing who's been harassing you, Moka?" Tsukune asked, naturally worried for her, but she just quickly waved it all away, clearly wanting to change the subject.
"No, no! It's nothing! Just some family thing. Anyway, about this other girl, is there anything else you can tell me about her?" She asked as they continued walking.
"Hmm…not much. Like I said, she looked pretty similar to your inner self. Even with the bright red eyes, though she was shorter. She said her name was Shalltear Bloodfallen."
"…Bloodfallen?"
"I had the same reaction." He assured her with an awkward chuckle, recognizing the familiar look across her face as one that'd been on his own. He resisted laughing any longer on it, as it was very rude to make fun of someone's name, especially their family name, and for the moment he probably shouldn't just assume it's fake without evidence.
Moka pondered through her memories for a moment. "That's not a lineage I'm familiar with. Then again, it's been a long time since I've been back home and spoken with my father, so maybe they're more recent."
Tsukune found himself momentarily stunned. He'd never actually heard her talk about any of her family before, much less her father. He just knew that when she was younger she had to leave her home and go live in the human world; a horribly miserable time in her life she'd understandably prefer not to bring up. While he'd never say it outright, Tsukune believed their friendship was all the proof anyone needed about how lonely Moka must have been before coming to the academy. He was almost insultingly average in every aspect a person could be and someone who most couldn't even believe could exist in the same reality as someone as amazing as her, let alone being able to call himself her friend.
"I hope she's not another fake." Moka commented somewhat dejectedly, regaining Tsukune's attention. "Like Junya was."
That was a name Tsukune certainly would rather never hear again.
Junya Inui. A second-year at the academy. Both his and Moka's senior. And a vampire.
…So he had claimed, but the truth that was eventually revealed was that he was nothing more than an Onimodoki; a type of monster that pretends to be other, stronger monsters as a way of warding off predators (and in Junya's case, for picking up girls).
Tsukune honestly wasn't sure what the worst part about that whole encounter was. How Junya had toyed with them with that old rule of the vampires that they may only be with other vampires to preserve their purity, the fact that the first other vampire Moka had met since she was a child was just a fake trying to use her, or that the only reason Moka hung out with Junya as long as she did was so that he wouldn't go after Tsukune for being so close to her.
It'd happened way too often ever since they'd become friends. How often Moka would put herself through pain or hardship just to keep him safe.
Tsukune looked down at his hand, able to see the edge of another wrap of bandages as his sleeve slightly drooped down.
"I need to get better than I am." He thought in disgust of himself. "I can't have Moka and the others keep putting themselves through so much because I'm too weak to take care of myself. I can't keep being a burden on them."
"Tsukune?"
"Oh, sorry. Guess I got lost in my own thoughts again."
The two teens finally returned to their walk, putting other matters aside for the time being, at least just so that they wouldn't be late. But their path found itself once again rather short-lived; only a few minutes before pausing as their heads perked up, starting to hear what sounded to be an odd mumbling.
Following their ears a short way down the path, they did not have to look very far for the voice's source. They probably would have noticed the man much sooner had they not been so enveloped in their own conversation. Quite frankly, if that Shalltear girl had stuck out to Tsukune because of how much she resembled the inner Moka at a first glance, this man stood out because of how little he resembled anyone the two had ever seen at the school period.
He was cloaked in an elaborate, jet-black academic gown, probably the most comfortable and likely expensive garment they'd ever laid eyes upon, but that was all there was about him that fit his setting. The metal pads that were draped across his shoulders seemed almost like large horns at first with how close to the sides of his head they were, and he wore thick armored gauntlets that completely covered his hands, making it almost impressive he wasn't accidentally tearing through the paper he held.
"I can't believe this… The directions were even in Japanese and I still got lost…" He muttered to himself under his breath, though still loud enough that Tsukune and Moka could hear him.
His head perking up like he was now aware he was being watched, the man had to turn his entire body just to look in the two's direction, as his shoulder pads clearly obscured that part of his vision.
When his eyes landed upon them, Tsukune and Moka took a small, involuntary step back. The back of his head was covered by the hood of his robe but now that he had his front to them, the two could see the mask that covered his entire face. It was of a curious design, almost like it hailed from another country, perhaps an Indonesian one Moka thought to herself (Tsukune was sadly more ignorant on what to compare it to). While the eyes were covered it was still clearly lens-like enough for its owner to see out of but the main point of interest was the mask's painted mouth. From one perspective it could be seen as a smile but from another it could just as easily be seen as a scowl, the odd mix giving the mask an almost neutral expression, which was unnerving in its own right.
"Oh, you two are students, yes?" The stranger called over to them. "Would you be so kind as to help me with these directions?" He asked, pointing at the map in his hand.
Mixed in with his unease, Tsukune felt quite the sense of déjà vu. The body type was certainly different but this was eerily similar to Shalltear.
Sensing that he was making the two uncomfortable, the stranger halted his approach. "Ah. Please, forgive me. It's the mask, yes?" He asked, pointing at the unmoving features. "Sorry, I wear it for…religious reasons. It's a bit personal to me, though I suppose it only makes sense you both would be distrustful of a man whose face he keeps hidden."
With great care, as though he was afraid to jiggle it around too much, the man lowered his hood and removed the mask, revealing his face to the two.
It was probably more insulting than he meant but Tsukune's first thought open seeing him was that the man was even more average looking than even he was. There was certainly no doubt this man was older than them both, clearly being an adult, yet save for his dark hair there were really no words that could be used to describe anything unique about him. He was incredibly plain.
"My name is Ainz Ooal Gown." The stranger introduced himself. "Though I am aware that is something of a mouthful, so please, feel free to simply call me Ainz."
It was quite the unusual name, though not too much more than Bloodfallen (it was at least easier to believe it was real). Plus, while he spoke Japanese as fluently as any native, everything else about him suggested he could be a foreigner, so such a name might not be so odd wherever he was from. Regardless, the two found themselves to be able to relax a bit around this man now.
"I'm Tsukune Aono."
"I'm Moka Akashiya."
Ainz gave an appropriate bow back to their own as he slid the mask back over his face and rised his hood again. "A pleasure to meet you both. Normally I don't remove my mask so easily but as I'm asking you for help it seemed only polite." He explained himself to them. "I'm a new hire of sorts at Yōkai Academy and it was recommended I take another tour around the campus before I began my day. …Unfortunately I've gotten myself a bit turned around. If you would be so kind as to at least direct me towards the cemetery, I can find my way back from there."
"Uh…y-yeah, sure. No problem." Moka said, finding the nerve to walk her way forward while Tsukune held back. In contrast to Shalltear, this meeting did not carry on for much longer. After comparing where they were in relation to his map and then pointing the way south, Ainz gave his thanks for the help and with a brisk pace was on his way, more than likely having his own worries about being late.
"Well, he seemed nice enough." Tsukune commented as they watched him go.
To that, Moka didn't respond, thinking something quietly to herself.
"…You don't think so?" He asked her.
"Oh! Well, no, not that. He certain was being very polite but something felt…off about him." Moka said, having trouble finding the words.
"Well, he does seem to be more dressed for being a wizard than any sort of schoolteacher."
"No, not his clothes." Moka shook her head. "It was… It was his face. Did you notice it too?"
"Notice what?"
"I don't know, it was just something about the way his mouth moved. Maybe I'm imagining it but it felt like his lips weren't quite matching up with his words. And his skin too. It just seemed a little too lose, like it wasn't fitting his face enough."
Tsukune was surprised at such minute observations. He certainly hadn't picked up on anything like that and Moka had noticed it all in that incredibly short window Ainz had his mask off. He didn't know if her skills had grown since joining the Newspaper Club or if she'd always been this attentive to detail but it was impressive regardless.
"Sorry. I didn't see anything like that." He shook his head. "I'm not saying you're wrong." He quickly waved his hands to assure her. "But honestly I'm not really sure what to make of Mr. Ainz. Everything about him kind of threw me off. He didn't seem dangerous, though."
"I suppose. I wonder what kind of monster he is?"
"Hard to tell. He did say that the school hired him. If we ask one of the teachers, we could at least maybe find out more about what he's teaching here. Even Gin might know something. He's always got his ear to the ground when it comes to new things happening at the academy." Tsukune threw out his suggestions.
"A new transfer student who might be a vampire…and now a new teacher. I wonder if there's anyone else new that's showing up today?"
"Yep…"
Tsukune's question was answered for him almost the second homeroom began. Everyone had already taken their seats by the time the first bell rang and quieted down. But the whispers of a few miscellaneous voices started to pick up again when it was noticed the class's teacher, Ms. Nekonome, was nowhere to be seen.
Soon however the door finally slid open and what entered the classroom was… There was no other word for it. She was divine. Like a literal goddess had just walked in.
Her heels made soft clacks against the floor as she calmly made her way up to the blackboard. Not a bit of the noise was inadvertently muffled because the entire class had been stuck silent by the very sight of her. Her long black hair flowed like water behind her, nearly reaching down past her waist and blending in with the lengthy slitting dress skirt she wore that touched beyond her knees. Her dress jacket was completely unbuttoned, as were the top two of the vest underneath that, showing off an ample amount of bosom that left little guesses as to what nearly every male in the classroom was staring at. Tsukune himself had to make a great effort to force his eyes away, feeling greatly ashamed of himself (and worried what Moka might think if she saw where he was looking). However, a quick glance around the room and numerous pink cheeks could be spotted on many of his female classmates. Even they couldn't help but to be completely enveloped by the woman's unearthly beauty.
When she finally got up behind the teacher's desk and turned to face them, the class finally took notice of something that threw them off her appearance; her horns. Poking out of her hair and draped across the sides of her scalp, the woman had two curved and flawlessly white horns. As a school for monsters, it was no surprise that she was one too but the point was to try and hide one's true nature well enough to blend in with human society. Then again, Ms. Nekonome's cat ears and tail had been painful obvious since day one and the only reason no one brought it up anymore was because of how much she scratched up the face of the last poor student who pointed it out. The adults at this school were probably given more leeway than the students in that regard.
And besides that, the way the horns fit around her head, they almost resembled a halo far more than anything even remotely demonic, serving only to add to her allure and keep anyone from saying anything to question it.
After taking a long minute to let her eyes study the classroom before her, the woman gave a smile, so soft and calming that half the students felt their hearts suddenly squeeze inside their chest.
"Good morning to you, class." She finally addressed them, speaking to them in a very smooth and practiced manner, like she'd done this a million times before. "As you've likely put together by now, Ms. Nekonome is absent today and in fact will be for the foreseeable future. As such, I will be taking over as your homeroom teacher and in her other duties as well for the time being. You may address me as Ms. Albedo."
One could practically see the steam erupting out the noses of near every male in the classroom. It wasn't as if Ms. Nekonome was hard on the eyes but this woman was simply on another plane of existence. Even Kurumu's literal succubus powers hadn't sparked this much of a reaction.
It was then that the classroom's door slid open once more.
"Wait… That's…!" Tsukune recognized her instantly, the scattered puzzle pieces of their encounter finally putting themselves fully back together again.
Shalltear wasn't breathing hard but her clothing certainly looked disheveled; moved about and uneven, likely due to a mad dash to get here on time. Something she'd sadly failed to accomplish, as the teacher soon pointed out.
"Oh? Ms. Bloodfallen. How lovely to see you. I was wondering where you were." Ms. Albedo said, her smile as pleasant as before but her tone seeming almost a little mocking. "I've already gone over the attendance list. Being so late on your first day is hardly the best impression to make."
Shalltear glared at the teacher for the longest time and whatever retort she was tempted to give was being heavily bitten back. "Sorry, sensei. I got a bit lost." She apologized with very clear reluctance to do so.
"Be that as it may, a warning is all you'll get this time. If this happens again, even tomorrow, I will have to give you detention."
"Detention?! For just being a few minutes late?!"
"A few minutes can make all the difference. How can you expect to be useful to your employer if they can't even expect you to show up on time? I'd certainly pity the master who'd be forced to rely on such a person."
Shalltear's eyes bugged out of her skull, like something inside her just snapped. "You…! You withered old hag…!" She snarled through her bared teeth. For a second Tsukune thought she was about to reach for the closest desk and pick it up to hit Ms. Albedo with it.
Seeing that she'd clearly gotten under the girl's skin, Ms. Albedo folded her arms, seeming to almost take pride in how much they pushed her breasts up as she did so. "Oh? Is something the matter, Ms. Bloodfallen? Have something you need to get off your chest?"
At those words Shalltear suddenly snapped out of her rage, her cheeks draining of what little color they had. Quickly folding her own arms in a manner similar to her teacher's, Shalltear turned her nose up at the woman. "No, it's nothing. I'm fine" She said, sounding very uncaring but the way she was gently moving her arms, it was like she was subtly trying to adjust her own chest without anyone noticing. Had her bra maybe gotten uncomfortably shifted on the run here?
Noticing how smug Ms. Albedo's smile seemed to get, some of the students started exchanging whispers with each other.
"Is the teacher really picking a fight with a student?"
"Dude, I hope so! Do you see how loosely that dress is hanging off her? One little tear in just the right place…!"
"I've got 500 Yen on the silver haired girl in that case!"
"I'll take that bet."
"Screw you guys. I'm waiting for the teacher to tear off Shalltear's clothes. It's not as big as hers but look at that rack!"
"What is wrong with this school…?" Tsukune thought to himself with an exhausted smile, remembering overhearing several similar conversations like this whenever some of his own friends would start fighting in a public place. Well…at least this fight was unlikely to end with the other guys wanting to kill him.
Putting aside the fun she was having at Shalltear's expense, Ms. Albedo looked back over her attendance list. "Hm… According to these records, it's been quite a while since Ms. Shirayuki attended class. Still, I suppose there's still a chance she might show up, so instead of her desk let's seat you next to…Mr. Aono, for now." She said, finding an empty space on the seating chart and pointing over to it in the physical classroom.
"Whatever." Shalltear shrugged as she turned, just happy she could finally sit down. As she walked she didn't have to look hard for the empty desk she was being directed to. However, just before she set her bag down was when she finally took notice of Tsukune. "Oh, it's you." She said in mild surprise, not expecting to see his face again so soon.
Awkwardly, Tsukune raised his hand to greet her. "H-hey, Shalltear. It's nice to see you again."
The ice cold glares of half the class hit him like a truck.
"He knows her?!"
"How does he know her?!"
"Why is it always him?!"
"If he gets one more girl hanging off him, I'm gonna eat that guy!"
"All we did was say hi!" Tsukune's thoughts sobbed to himself, this sort of feeling having become way too common for him.
As Shalltear sat down, seeming either oblivious or uncaring to all the murderous intent being directed Tsukune's way thanks to her, Moka, whom sat only a few desks away, watched her in curiosity.
"She's clearly the girl Tsukune was telling me about earlier. She does actually look a lot like my old family photos."
Moka had never actually seen what her inner self looked like when she appeared. From how Tsukune had described her, she was almost exactly like how Moka had looked when she was a child, before the Rosario had sealed away her powers and turned her hair pink like her mother's (though that latter part wasn't something she terribly minded). While obviously older than she was back in those old photos, Shalltear matched that description almost to a T.
Shalltear took a glance over at Moka and Moka quickly averted her eyes in embarrassment, realizing she'd been staring for too long. After about ten seconds, Moka took a quick peek back, only to see that Shalltear was still looking at her. At first afraid that the other girl was mad at her, she was slightly relieved to see Shalltear give her a kind smile.
…Until Moka realized that flash of a smile wasn't just out of kindness. The moment Shalltear winked at her, Moka realized the expression was quite a bit flirty.
Her face going beet red, Moka shot her face and all her attention straight towards the front of the classroom, her posture going completely stiff (aside from a few trembles) as she tried her best to avoid thinking about anything.
With everyone seated, Ms. Albedo directed everyone's attention back to herself, getting them all to settle back down.
"Alright, alright, that's enough. It's time for our actual schoolwork to begin. However, as a quick note, some of you I'm sure have seen it on the main bulletin board but in case you haven't let me tell it to you now. There is an assembly later this afternoon that all students will be attending. I highly suggest not skipping out, as it is of great importance."
"An assembly?"
The auditorium was as packed as it'd ever been. Tsukune lost his friends in the sea of other first-years, which was in turn boxed in by the second and third-years. Figuring he'd find them afterwards, he compliantly took his seat with all the others. Up on stage he could see many of the teachers he was familiar with; the gym teacher Mr. Kotsubo, the English teacher Mr. Maki, the math teacher Ms. Kagome (whose presence made Tsukune very on-edge for reasons he'd rather not talk about). Even Ms. Albedo was up there. But there were also some faces he didn't recognize at all, and from the conversations he was overhearing from the other students, he wasn't the only one.
An older man, with an appropriately greying hair and beard. Given his black and very English style of suit he looked far more like someone's butler than any kind of teacher; an impression that was made even stronger by how straight and proper he stood, like his spine was a metal rod instead of bones.
Another man close by him had skin that was only a few shades less red than his own suit; not bad enough to be a sunburn but odd enough to where it didn't look quite natural. He had a naturally devious smile across his face that didn't seem like it was intentional, though maybe it'd be easier to tell if Tsukune could see his eyes at all. The glasses he wore were so thick that they showed off nothing other than the reflection of the lights that hit them.
Multiple heads on the stage turned to their left, signaling the arrival of a new face that walked up the short steps.
"Wait a second…" Tsukune's eyes went wide upon seeing him. "That man is…!"
His robe swept the floor as he approached the main podium. When he turned to face the crowd, they went just as silent as Tsukune and Moka had upon seeing that mask.
"Greetings to you all, students. I hope this day finds you well." He spoke into the microphone connected to the overhead speakers so that everyone may hear him. "As your class officers should have already informed you, at least in regards to the upperclassmen, your headmaster Tenmei Mikogami has had to take a temporary leave of absence, in order to focus on a few urgent affairs going on in the human world. He will return eventually, but until such time he has asked me and some of the other new teachers you've no doubt noticed around me to fill in for key positions while he's away."
There were scattered collections of murmurs heard throughout the sea of students. Some apparently had known that the headmaster was gone while the news came as a complete shock to others. Even Tsukune, while he'd never met the man, had heard students in the past speaking with weird words attached to him. Things like calling him a Dark Lord or "One of the Three". It wasn't much but it'd been enough to give Tsukune the impression the man was very powerful and very important.
And if what the man at the podium was saying was true…
As anyone who might have been looking would have noticed, the smirks of Ms. Albedo and the man in red grew just a tad more conniving.
"I am Ainz Ooal Gown. The new headmaster of Yōkai Academy."
Author's notes: I don't know why I made this either than because I could. Just a random idea I had one day and decided to write a few chapters on a while back. Since they've just been gather digital dust in a folder on my computer, I figured I might as well post them and see what happens, kind of like the random Love Is War fanfic I made.
By the way this story follows Rosario+Vampire's manga continuity, because f**k the anime and f**k it hard. Because who needs interesting plot and character progression when you've got panty shots!
Seriously though, I think that was the first time I'd ever gone from an anime to the manga and then back to both years later and been that pissed off over an adaptation. When people complain about Overlord's anime adaptation it's usually just some of the CGI and that some things had to be cut. But it didn't just completely rip away whole important chunks of the story and replace them with, honestly, pretty meh fanservice like R+V's anime did.
