Mike never watched the news on TV. Which was good, because if there was pictures and notes of me in every newspaper I could only imagine how it was on the TV news. And there were a load of pictures and notes in the newspapers. I knew none of the care workers got the papers home, and to save some money they read the one at the dumping ground. It didn't seem Jessa had read them either- she never said much so I wasn't so sure. But here I felt happier than ever that I always came up early in the morning. Because that gave me time to get the newspaper before anybody else woke up and hide them under the mattress in my bed before Kim had woken up.
The first time I had noticed myself in the paper was Friday, the next day was Saturday (well, duh!) and on Sundays there were no papers. I breathed out for a minute, but still couldn't relax and to look out the window every third window just to make sure there wouldn't be some sort of extra paper this day.
I wondered a bit about how long I would have to, or could keep on collecting the papers like this while I kept hiding them on Monday morning too and as far as I knew- I would have to keep on doing it if it wasn't for one thing…
On Monday evening everyone seemed to be either in bed or on their way. Most of them up seemed to be the older ones, at least twelve at least. But I had noticed Xavier was up too. And Kim was up. But I hadn't noticed her for a while so I took a bit for granted that she had gone off and tip- toed into our room to get something. Afterwards I would never be able to know what I had gotten, because I never really got that far.
"I know what you're doing." I hadn't had the chance to realize that the papers were gone before I heard Kim's voice behind me and quickly span around. "I know where you come from." When I saw Kim had all of the last few days' papers lying open around her on the bed. "You won't be able to keep it a secret forever. Mike's gonna know. And he's gonna know everything!"
"Please don't tell him." I could hear my own voice shaking. Kim's voice was low, but I still listened as closely as I could hoping with all that I had that no one had heard and I quickly closed the door. "Look! I'll tell him as soon as I can but you don't know anything and you can't tell Mike anything okay."
"What's in it for me?"
I lost my breath, I should have known that the one who found out first would say something like that. But what was I supposed to do? I had no money to buy anything with. And I couldn't do other peoples' chores if I wanted to ever have any either.
"What do you want?"
"So you really don't want me to tell anyone?"
"No… When do you want it? What do you want?"
"Tomorrow, when I come from school." I moaned. What did she want that I could get before then? "Do you want me to keep it a secret or not?" I nodded. "So then…" Her blue eyes peered and she shook her head slightly. "This one's gonna cost ya!"
"Trenton." I knew it was late at night but I did have no other choice. I would never remember it afterwards. "Xavier, can you leave us two alone please?" Xavier held up his headphones to show he wasn't going to hear anything. "I know, but I really need to be alone with Trenton. It's just for a minute okay?" Xavier pouted a bit. "Please!" Xavier lightened up a bit, got onto his feet and then did a pirouette- then another one, and another one and so on until he had moved to the side out the door. "Hey nice dancing…" I closed the door. "Trent, I really need to borrow some money." I knew Trenton had an envelope with saved money in his bedside table drawer. But he just raised an eyebrow. "Please, please Trent. It's an emergency. I don't know how much I need but probably… well, much. But I will pay you back as soon as I can. Okay?"
"No rush…" Trenton pulled all of the money out of the envelope and counted it. "It's exactly two hundred pounds." I nodded. "What do you need it for anyway?"
"I-" I hesitated. "I can't tell you right now. I'll tell you later. When I can…" To interrupt myself I reached up and just slightly touched his cheek with my lips. "You're an angel!" With that, I left his room, and tried to hide the money in my hand walking up the stairs and back into my room. "Okay." It looked like Kim was asleep but I knew better. "I get those things tomorrow while you're all at school. But then don't tell anyone." I slumped down into my bed and put the money into the pillow case. "Goodnight."
Kim just moaned for an answer- oh how lucky I was to have gotten the best roommate!
I turned my back against her and closed my eyes. I hadn't actually planned to fall asleep so fast. I needed to do some thinking. But still, I drifted off fast and had barely come to the third word of thinking when I fell asleep and dreamed something about my baby who turned out to be a vampire that needed gummy worms…
"Here." I had gathered all the bags of gummy worms I had found (thirteen) and threw them onto the counter and pulled up the cash it would take. The cashier- a pimpled young man, that couldn't have been many years older than me looked down on it all, and then up at me with a raised eyebrow.
"What are you…"
"It doesn't matter." I gave him the cash. "Is that enough?" He counted it and nodded. I threw up the plastic bag I had from the movie store on the counter but pushed it too hard and it landed on the other side and the DVD box and the diary fell out. "Darn it." The man just bent down, picked it up and started throwing in the bags with candy.
"I can see what you're gonna do." He held the bag to me. "Marathon of vampire diaries, writing journal and loads of candy. Huh?"
"None of your business."
With that, I grabbed the things that Kim had wanted for her to keep silent about where I came from. And came home just as Floss, Harry, Belle and Xavier came home from school. It seemed like Mike had spent most of the day with trying to get the kids that had come with Derek and Jessa into the same school as everybody else. I could almost sense how annoyed Mike was by it all and knowing he wanted me in too I ran off as soon as possible and hid the things for Kim under my bed until further notice while I laid down on my bed with a copy of cookie by Jacqueline Wilson to read until the others started coming home as well.
I had noticed that when all were home, or as much as just two of them, there were not many places where you could get some peace and quiet and be alone. Which were all things I could kind of need when I was drawing, there were a few chairs among the trees in the garden but it was October and raining so I didn't feel like sitting outside.
Although, there was one place.
It might have been that in another few weeks or most it would be too cold to sit in the attic too. Or I could just start dressing in warmer things than knitted shirts and skater skirts and maybe I could sit here with my drawing things all winter. Because it really was the best place in the house when you just needed to be alone.
Once again I got a few papers and some pencils and walked up the stairs and sat down just inside the door. To keep a bit of warmth I kept the door between the attic and the top of the stairs open and instead of sneakers I had pulled on a pair of the warmest knitted socks I could find. All in all this kind of made the best place to sit and draw.
"Hey." Suddenly Johnny peaked through the door and came in. "Are you okay?" I lowered the pencil and nodded. "Well, I'm always the last one to come home from school. I go to play basketball or go to the school gym for a bit so… Sorry… I'm only babbling."
"That's okay." I smiled, and tried not to show that Johnny's voice was making my heart beat and my hands shake. And Johnny came and sat down in front of me leaning against some boxes and smiling. He must have been showering because his hair was wet and I could have smelled the axe deodorant from miles away- not that I was complaining about it though!
"I've been noticed you go up here a lot. Kind of a good place to be on your own don't you think?" I nodded- that was exactly what I had been thinking too. "What are you drawing?" I showed him- just some random outfit as usual. "That's nice. Would you like to be a designer some day?" I shrugged- I wouldn't really think I was good enough for that! "I'm sure you will." He laughed but seemed kind of nervous and I decided to change the subject to something that didn't really matter.
"So, holby city's on tonight. I wonder if I can get the kids away from the TV… Nah! Probably not. Oh well, I'll just watch it on the Internet when I get the chance." Johnny nodded, but had kind of a mischievous smile on his lips. "You're gonna find a way for all of the children to get away from the TV aren't you?" Johnny nodded. "Do you like holby?" He shrugged. "Do you?"
"I've seen a few episodes. Enough to have a favorite character. I saw this episode where one of the doctor's daughters comes in and fakes appendicitis. And there's also a kid in it who just looks so much like Mo."
"Mhm. It's Sacha's daughter Rachel. So which one is your favorite character then?"
"I like Hansen."
"I like Sacha."
Silence fell over the room again, and I suddenly noticed how cold it had gone. It was still only early October. But grey clouds hung over the town of Newcastle. In Great Britain! How unusual! And there wasn't any heat in the room of the attic. But I was too lazy to move and get a warmer shirt so I just pulled my hands into the sleeves of my grey, knitted one and shivered slightly.
"Oh, are you cold? Here, you can have my shirt." Johnny pulled his blue hoodie off and held it to me. "Go on take it!"
"But then you'll be cold."
"I can take it. Come on." Johnny wasn't taking any protests. And I couldn't help to notice the way you could see his very fit stomach muscles moving under the slim fit T shirt. And as he was holding the hoodie up there was nothing else for me to do than to put my hand in either hole and pull it on. And Johnny crawled over to where I sat and laid his arm around my shoulders as if he wanted to give me more warmth than what the shirt could give. Even though the shirt would have been perfectly enough- and I was not going to protest!
I slowly relaxed and leaned into his embrace putting my head against his chest. Once again it was hard to keep my eyes open but I still couldn't help to feel so annoyed I moaned when I realized I would have to get up.
"Sorry." I stretched up and pushed Johnny's arm away. "I need the toilet again. " Johnny raised an eyebrow and I decided to joke with him a little. "You see when you're pregnant the uterus…" Johnny sang and put his hands over his ears. "I know, I'll be back in a minute." I turned to the door and walked down the stairs. The bathroom upstairs was occupied so I sighed and turned towards the one downstairs. But never got that far.
"Kenny." When I could hear Mike's voice I turned around to see him standing there with Kim right behind and the newspaper in his hands. Opened, and on one of the smaller pictures I recognized my red hair even though on this distance it was hard to see the rest. "…Kennedy LaRusso." I barely dared to breathe while Mike closed the newspaper. "Thank you Kim." He turned to me while I held my breath. "I want you to tell me the whole story of why you're here Ken. And I want you to do it now."
Cliffy, cliffy, cliffy. It doesn't seem like Kenny have much choice but to tell them now. But maybe she'll get out of this with some white lies. Or maybe not… You'll just have to wait and see what happens but one thing is for certain- whatever happens there will be drama! Oh and yeah, whatever happens Johnny and Kenny- Jenny. Is totally happening! It would probably take a person who's both blind and death not to know that. But. Until next time.
