Mike POV
"Michael?" The day that Michael had returned there hadn't been much time to speak. But I knew I had to and got him already at breakfast. "There's something I have to talk to you about. His eyes grew wide towards me. It's okay, it's okay. I'm not going to yell at you and you're not in trouble. I just need to talk to you about something that happened while you were gone."
Michael had been sitting on the floor and now came crawling onto his feet. Then he followed me into the office where I had put the letter that his mum had given me on the desk.
"Actually… your mum saw you in the paper or on Facebook. And then she came around."
"Does she want me to live with her?" Michael interrupted before I had even started talking. "Does she want both me and Lavernius to live with her like it was when I was a baby and she wasn't with my dad? My dad is the one who hurt me you know? It was his fault I'm retarded."
"MICHAEL." I shouted to interrupt him. "Please don't call yourself that. And also… I'm sorry. But your mum doesn't want you to live with her. She left this letter though. I haven't had the time to read it. But if you live here until you are sixteen or if you're ever fostered…"
"I'm going to be fostered. I AM!"
Tears had risen in the blonde boy's eyes when I told him his mum didn't want him around. Michael did have strong feelings- of the kind that only children or disabled people like him or Kenny's mum had. But Michael wasn't a small kid and unusually strong so I couldn't risk of making him angry.
"Maybe. We don't know…"
The phone had never rung at such a time where it didn't fit. But right then it did.
"Ashdene Ridge Mike?"
"I WILL GET FOSTERED. I WILL MIKE. I WILL."
"Hello. Maybe I should call at another time."
"No. No It's time."
"WHAT DOES THAT LETTER SAY?"
I took the letter, threw it into the desk drawer and slammed the drawer shut. Michael started sobbing. I couldn't blame him.
"Anyway. It's Matt. And I've been talking to Rob at the social services and sorted out one extra room at mine so I was just wondering about the next step…"
Kenny POV
It was strange, one moment time had been passing by so slowly, and in the next moment time was just running by. And not longer than a couple of days after Michael had returned to the dumping ground after running away, Trenton stood in the hallway with his bags while Matt was in the office.
"Can you believe this Ken?" He asked me when I came down the stairs to say goodbye, after all it was my best friend leaving so I kind of had to. "I know I can't. After everything I said about that it'll only be younger kids who gets fostered and then protesting every time somebody said that Matt seemed to like me…" Trenton pulled his backpack onto his shoulders. "And now here I am."
"I guess you were just wrong." I said. "Who wouldn't want to foster you anyway? With all the cleaning and tidying you do Matt will never have to worry about that ever again?" I smirked and Trenton grimaced back and me- we both knew very well Trenton getting fostered wasn't by any means for all the cleaning and tidying he did.
But then his smile died out when Minnie came into the hallway.
"Hello Minnie." He greeted her. "Come to say goodbye?"
"Yeah." Trenton laid his hand on Minnie's shoulder and gave her a side hug. "But I wanted to give you this too."
"A leaving gift?" Trenton rolled up the big drawing and looked down on it while Minnie held her breath. "Wow, this is really nice. I can frame this and hang it on my wall. Then I can look at it every single day. "Look here Kenny." Trenton gave Minnie another hug and then he showed me the drawing of some different people. "There's me, there's you Kenny with all the red hair. There's Mike with no hair at all, and that must be you Minnie. And then Duke with his big, fat belly, and May- Li. And then the last one is… who's that?"
"That's Matt." Minnie pointed to the last person in the drawing. "Because he's the one who you'll be living with now."
"Of course… Wow Minnie. This is really good." Minnie gave a thankful smile and mumbled something before she walked away, then his smile suddenly died out again and with the poster rolled up in his hand he sat down in the stairs.
"I would sit down next to you, But the thing is, if I did I might never get up again. I feel like a whale already… And imagine what a relief it will be for you not to have to listen to my pregnancy ailments every day."
"Don't worry about those. Come on, those ailments are just the signs of everything being like it should… The thing is just. There are so many kids who needs this more than I do. Kids who have been in care for all their lives. Younger kids whose lives would be changed, for the better if they had a parent like Matt. And still…" Matt and Mike just came out from the office and Matt and Trenton were ready to leave. "..still Matt chose me."
"I guess it's not much about choose." Matt patted Trenton's shoulder. "I just saw you, and we started talking and all of a sudden several hours had passed by. Something inside of me chose for me and I didn't get a word to say in it."
"These damn hormones."
Mike laid his arm around my shoulders when I wiped the tears away with the back of my hands.
"You can come and visit." Matt gave me a nervous smile as if he had heard my thoughts. "You and Trenton are best friends and that doesn't have to change only because you don't live in the same house… So you can come and visit any time you like."
He didn't say anything more, but Trenton raised his hand in a wave and then walked before his new foster dad out the door while I knew there was something more I had to say.
"Matt?"
"Yeah?"
When he turned around towards me I first lost all words and then knew once again all at once what I was going to say but not exactly how to say them.
"I… I… the thing is… I… I'm sorry."
"Kennedy." Matt let go of the bag he had taken and looked to me. "Don't you dare say that. Because this isn't your fault. None of this is. And I'm… heartbroken, I and Ashley had been together for a long time before he showed his true colors. But yet I am so happy that he did it just now and not after we had fostered or adopted a child. And… I do think that there's a reason for everything that happens. And right now…" Trenton came inside to see if there was anything more to take. "…I'm so happy I'll have the most awesome Trenton living with me. And then maybe some time in the future, I can adopt a younger child. And you will make sure you tell the social services about how well I treat you, right?"
"Absolutely." Trenton said with a smirk. "That you let me have cake and sweets for every meal of the day. And you let me stay up late. And you spoil me rotten with everything I've ever wanted."
"Yeah…" Matt said but his smile did look nervous. "…I might be able to spoil you but with things I don't know."
"Don't worry about that Matt." Trenton said and still smirking. "Of course I don't mind about that. Are you ready to leave or is there anything else?"
I hugged my best friend tight, or at least as tightly as I could with my big belly. Then stepped to the side when Trenton took his backpack and Matt took a bag who laid to the side that Trenton had packed all his books in. It must be heavy!
"Matt?"
"Yeah?"
Matt turned around in the door and something in the way he looked back at me told me that he really was someone to trust.
"I promised Trenton you wouldn't disappear."
Matt had a sort of sad look in his eyes when knowing what I did- that Trenton's family had left him one after one.
"I promise I'll do my best."
When Matt turned around towards me again I started backing towards the world outside I turned and went up the stairs. I would have laid down on my bed but it took forever just to find a position that I could as much as breathe in.
I promise Trenton you wouldn't disappear.
I looked down on my belly and felt little Boo kick towards my hand.
"I promise I will find someone who doesn't disappear from you too."
Random fact
I know what that letter says and I know when it will be opened.
