Chapter 1 Distant

Eragon awoke in the early morning to the distant sound of thunder in the distance. He groaned and rolled over trying hopelessly for his waking dreams to take him once more. Finally admitting defeat he sat up and opened the shades to greet the sunrise that was covered in dark grey clouds.

He had specifically requested this room because of the large window that faced westward, toward all he had left behind half a decade ago. Saphira told him constantly to move rooms because "focusing on the past is no way to start a day" but he wouldn't move. He wanted to remember every morning why he left and why he couldn't return.

Finally taking his eyes off of the sky he looked over to the wall where he had hung fairths of his family and friends back home. An image of Roran and Katrina along with their young daughter Ismira hung on one side. An image of Oromis and Glaedr was on the other side with a image of Nasuada below it. In the middle of these fairths was the largest and most detailed fairth. An image of an elf with dark black hair and emerald eyes. She was standing alone and looked like a goddess in eragons opinon. The Fairth of Arya was by far his favorite because he had captured her mid laugh which was a rarity for her. A pang of longing and pain shot through him as he looked at the image of his love as it had every day since he had left Alagaesia. He stood there for several moments reflecting before a familiar voice spoke in his head.

"After all this time?" Saphira spoke softly in his mind "Arya is a great friend but you have not had a proper conversation with her since we left, correct?".

Eragon sent the equivalent of a nod through their mental link but refrained from saying anything. The truth was Eragon and Arya had spoke numerous times since Eragon arrived in Mount Arngor but it never amounted to much more than talk of pleasantries and details of when shipments would arrive from the elven lands. Eragon had figured at first that she was simply busy with her duty as elven queen as well as her duties as a dragon rider but after several years and very little communication he had come to the conclusion that she had decided to end their friendship for an unknown reason. It had hurt him terribly and his recent scrying sessions with her had become unbearably painful to go through. Eragon got changed as Saphira spoke again.

"You must let her go she has made her decision, little one"

"I cannot let her go" Eragon said pulling on his boots and heading for the door "Tell me, could you forget Firnen so quickly?"

It took Saphira several moments to answer and to Eragons surprise there was a deep sadness when she spoke "No, of all the dragons I have seen he is still only one I wish to be with. Perhaps fate will favor us for once and we can both be with who we love"

Eragon spoke softly "for our happiness I hope you are right"

"Aren't I always?"

Eragon smiled as left his chambers to start a new day.
