Chapter 2 Mount Arngor

Eragon stood atop the tallest tower looking over the collection of buildings they created over the years. Many of the main buildings were complete including a fortress they had named Du risa vaete or the rising hope which was well named for inside was the collection of eggs and eldunari that was the hope for the future of the dragon race. The dragons and eldunari were well guarded by enchantments and an elf was on guard at all times. The mountain was a great natural barrier as it was large had only one narrow path up to the city allowing for easy defense. Eragon marveled at how perfectly the mountain had fit them and their plans. It was far enough away from Alagaesia to discourage any unwanted visitors but close enough to still be able to trade. Coming out of his thoughts Eragon spotted a large blue dragon in the distance and smiled as he started to descend the tower.

"How was the hunt?"

"Successful as always little one, These slow deer make it too easy"

Eragon chuckled and responded "To be fair deer cannot breathe fire nor can they fly"

"It would be more fun if they did" Saphira said slightly grumbly

"hmm well we must get going if we are to be on time for training"

Saphira growled in agreement and landed at the base of the tower where Eragon leapt onto her saddle and she immediately went into a long dive to get to the training fields at the base of the mountain.

When they arrived they found only one pair of dragon and rider waiting patiently for them. Folir waited on a large rock sitting cross legged meditating while his dragon Veres flew above him in circles.

Folir was a young elf from Ellesmera who was around 170 years old with short brown hair and golden eyes. He was serious and reserved like many of his kind and although he spoke rarely he was an excellent student who was well liked by Eragon His dragon Veres seemed to be the opposite of him. Veres was a bright red dragon who always seemed to be talking and moving. He was a good student according to Saphira but had problems with arrogance and over confidence as well as some anger issues as he felt he was stronger and wiser than others and more than once Saphira had to remind him of his place in the order.

Eragon and Saphira landed and approached the pair. Folir leapt off the boulder and landed gracefully in front of Eragon

Folir spoke the traditional elven greeting to Eragon

"Atra esterní ono thelduin ebrithil"

"Mor'ranr lifa unin hjarta onr"

"May I ask where Moroth is?" Eragon inquired

"Ebrithil I haven't seen hi—"

But Folir was interrupted by a loud roar from above him. Eragon looked up and saw his other student, Moroth, descending atop his silvery dragon Makkia. Moroth was a human from Teirm. He grew up poor and had arrived scrawny and weak but 2 years of training had made him lean and muscular and reminded Eragon much of himself before the Blood-Oath Ceramony…good and bad

"Now that you both are here we can get started with todays lesson" Eragon said as Makkia landed on the soft grass.

After training an elf approached Eragon. He recognized her as Nala one of the 12 that came with him to help teach the dragon riders

"Ebrithil, Arya Drottning has requested an audience with you"

Eragons thoughts began to race, It was much to soon for Arya to contact him unless something had happened

"Is something wrong?, Did something happen to the eggs?"

Nalas face remained impassive "I do not know shadeslayer I was only sent to find you"

Eragon nodded and quickened his pace back to his study. He climbed the steps two at a time and burst through the door. Eragon approached his scrying mirror and sat down. Arya sat there on the other side talking to an advisor. Once she realized that he was there she waved him away and looked at Eragon

After exchanging pleasantries Eragon asked rather hurriedly

"Are you ok? Is the egg I gave you safe?

Arya gave him a small smile that nearly made him melt…refocusing Arya spoke

"Yes both me,Firnen and the egg are all well. I have asked to speak with you to give you the news that I will be visiting Mount Agnor in 3 weeks time."

Eragon, although happy about this, couldn't forget that she had been so distant toward him and so responded colder than he meant to.

"and the reason for this visit is…?"

Arya's eyes flashed as she heard the harshness of his response but she quickly regained her composure

"Firnen and I feel we have neglected our duties as riders long enough, we have things we must learn to better help all of Alagaesia"

"So your abducting the throne?" Eragon tried to keep the hope out of his voice he was sure she noticed it for when she responded it was a much kinder tone

"no…. The council has given me a month away for training purposes only, Then I must return to Du Weldenvarden"

" I see" replied Eragon the disappointment and pain clear in his face

Arya gave him a look of pity and sorrow

"Eragon I" but he cut her off

"No its ok" Eragon said "You put duty first….Like always" Eragon ended bitterly

"I must go Arya I have much work to do"

"of…of course" Arya replied surprised and slightly hurt

They exchanged goodbyes and Arya disappeared

Eragon put his face in his hands trying to stop the flow of tears

"Oh Saphira, what am I going to do"
