Edmure sat sulking on his bed once again as tears formed in his eyes. He had failed another test from the Maester. Why couldn't he just get the knowledge stuck inside of him? Was he stupid? Was he retarded?
"Edmure," Lysa knocked on his door three times and he could hear her voice sing to a melody he had never heard before. "Do you want some cookies? They're really really sweet?"
"Go away, Lysa. And stop singing."
"Alright, Edmure Bye." There was silence for a few second and he had thought she had left. "Psych!" And then the door was kicked open with a loud noise.
"Seven Hells!" Edmure couldn't help but get scared.
"Sorry, Edmure but you don't just tell me to go away. I am your sister after all." She hugged the struggling Edmure who tried to get away from her. "Anyway I heard what happened with the maester. And it seems that you need some help. And I'm here to help you." Edmure stopped struggling to get out of her embrace.
"How?" He wondered.
"By playing a game called... 'Hustle a castle'."
"I've never heard of it. But it sounds similar to 'Come into my castle'."
"Let's just say that it is similar to the game you're used to. However, the 'Hustle a castle' about other lords of other castles trying to take over your castle through lies and deception which is based on truth. It's a card game. Each player receives a set of cards which will tell how much military the castle House can have, food rations, your economical status and so on. When you put down your card on the table you have decided to use it and you can't use it a second time. The point and if you declare war then you have to put all your cards on the table. If all your cards are stronger than the other players cards then you win. Of course, there will be a few piles of random additional cards that may or may not to your advantage. How about it want to play?"
"It sounds interesting... Yes, sure I'll play."
"Great! I'll have it ready for you by the next moon."
"That long?"
"Of course! Every card needs to be perfect."
Lysa then sweet-talked Hoster Tully into giving her some cold coins so that she could hire artisans to make cards for the game.
A month later the cards were done and Edmure eagerly sat in a secret place that could only be accessed through a hidden passage that started in the hallways next to their father's room. How Lysa had found that place he had no idea about. But it was a fairly small place. Lysa had the place decorated to sort of give it a secretive and mysterious atmosphere. There were torches on the walls and a round table that had a smaller round table above it.
"Take a seat and pick a house among the pile of cards here you want to play as."
"Any house?" Edmure looked at the coat of armours.
"Yes, just pick whatever you want."
Edmure thought for a moment before picking House Tyrell and she handed him the pile of cards. Edmure was amazed by the cards' pictures along with a letter that described House Tyrell's history and current situation, which was also described by the other cards. He looked at the card that said 'Mace Tyrell" and another that said "Olenna Tyrell". But he couldn't understand the numbers on the cards.
"Good choice." Lysa declared. "Then I'll pick House Lannister." She picked up a pile of cards. The other houses she just pushed into a box.
"Then let me explain the rules. First you read your letter and try to remember as much information as possible before the sand in this hourglass has run out. Then each of us chooses a person we play as through the cards. For example, I might choose to play as Tywin Lannister because I have his card here. I begin by introducing myself as the person I play and I try to act as much as possible as the person I play as by taking hints from the information on the cards. We each then have ten other cards that may or might be useful in the game depending on how it turns out. If you have cards of a person who are eligible to marriage you can exchange the card for another pile of House cards and then you'll gain more options to what you want to do. For example I have Cersei Lannister, and I might choose to marry her into house Martell with Oberyn Martell. I put the Cersei card on the table and then I'll gain access to House Martell cards and can use their military as well as economic cards freely. The point of the game is to make the other person hand over the other person's castle whether it's through war or not. If you declare war during the game you have to place your military cards and I will place my military cards on the table. In order to increase the attacks you might want to combine your military cards with a food ration card. If you don't have enough military cards, you might want to exchange your economic card with a military card on the small table here. If you run out of money you might want to borrow from the Iron Bank, which are the cards here. But if you choose to borrow from the bank be aware of when the money is due to be repaid. Otherwise the bank will take your castle from you and you lose and if I have enough money I might be able to buy your castle and so I get your castle in the end. Then there are random children cards here depending on which family you marry into you might exchange a spouses card for a child or children depending on how fertile the woman is. There are also a random set of cards here who each cost about one hundred thousand gold coins. And the cards are each different and can either be to your advantage or not. There are many ways to win the game Edmure. Just be a bit creative while sticking to the rules."
And so they began to play. Edmure read the letter of information about House Tyrell and tried to remember as much as possible. Then he chose to play as Olenna Tyrell because the Mace Tyrell's card was just so weak in comparison. He loved Tyrell's economic cards and was sure to use them well as they had over ten million many dragon coins combined. Then Lysa began talking and said that she was going to exchange one million dragon coins for food rations. That earned her five food ration cards. Edmure in turn declared war and decided to win the game as soon as possible. He put his military cards down combined with his food ration cards and thought he was going to win. However, Lysa ended up winning as Tywin Lannister's army had stronger attack points even if there were fewer soldiers. Combined with food rations cards she quickly defeated the Tyrell army and Edmure lost all of his military cards in one go. Then Edmure struggled to keep surviving as his sister kept beating him. He lost his castle miserably after she had Olenna Tyrell assassinated and the heir of Mace Tyrell remained but that wasn't enough to beat his sister who had made so many alliances with other houses. So he wanted to forfeit but then he played the Wildfire card and he burned up everything so that Lysa couldn't have Highgarden in the end. And both of them didn't win in the end.
Edmure took the loss but decided to beat his sister next time. He furiously studied another House Baratheon since they seemed to have a very strong military from the alliance he had made with Mace Tyrell card. Next time he decided to play as Stannis Baratheon as he had the highest defence and wisdom points. And he would marry Robert Baratheon into Starks family to gain the north's strong military power. For even if they were few in size, Lysa had used them to obliterate the army of House Targaryen which he had gained by marrying away a child of Mace Tyrell called Anya after he married Mace Tyrell into House Tully to his sister, Catelyn who was very fertile according to the card. He gained three random children cards and married one of the girls to Rhaegar Targaryen along with offering a lot of money for their marriage. But that Targaryen army hadn't been strong and in the end he had to use The Wildfire card.
It took at least five games until Edmure finally won over his sister and the joy he felt was so large that he had ended up bragging about it to his father and uncle and everyone else around the dinner table. The information he had used by explaining how he conquered House Lannister was so accurate that Hoster Tully got curious about the game in the end. Edmure ended up showing his father, Catelyn and their uncle the hidden passageway and of course Hoster scolded Lysa for not telling him about it. She just shrugged her shoulders and said that she thought he knew about the hidden passageways. Hoster made a mental note of checking up on all the passageways throughout his castle.
Everyone watched as Edmure and Lysa played the game. It ended up with Lysa winning as she played Doran Martell. And then after a few more rounds Hoster Tully got curious and began to play against Lysa. Hoster ended up winning in the end because he was of course more experienced in scheming but his daughter hadn't been bad. He in fact was quite proud over her choices.
Catelyn and Lysa played against each other. Catelyn used her own card to marry Brandon Stark and combined she could have six random children cards and marry them away to powerful houses and that got Hoster the idea of actually marrying Catelyn into House Stark.
The game became so popular among the children that for an entire month they only played the game. Of course, they only played it with each other and Hoster wanted to keep the game a secret from the other houses as it could offend them. The card game were after all based on real information. And how his daughter had gained that information he was very curious about but he was too busy with other things to go and investigate. So he had one of his knights keep an eye on Lysa. But nothing worthwhile came up.
Meanwhile, the 'Hustle a Castle' card game became famous among the children living in Riverrun another game became famous especially among the boys. It was called assassinate. It was a game similar to 'Hide and Seek' where they mimicked stabbings to the neck and other vital points of the body. This game came about after Lysa told Edmure an Assassin Creed fanfic story Cinderella had read somewhere when she was young.
During the time of the game, the players were supposed to find ways to "assassinate" each other until only one player remained. The players would gather at a common point. The assassin master (who often was Lysa) would then count down from a hundred. In the meantime, all the players would try to find a hiding place. Once The assassin master declared "Valar morghulis" and then they all would shout from their hiding places "Valar dohaeris" and then the real game began. The players were supposed to hide, but also find each other and "assassinate" each other within an hour. The goal was not to get "killed" during the hour of the game. In order to prove when they had killed someone the players all wore a white cloth around their head. When they had gotten "killed" they would hand it to the other player and the "dead" player would go to the assassin master and sit in boredom as they waited for everyone else.
Since these sorts of games were glorifying assassins Hoster Tully banned it to Catelyn's satisfaction and Edmure and his friends would simply have to play football or something else. Of course, that still didn't stop Edmure from playing an easier version of it with his cousins and other children in Riverrun. They would sneak up on each other and make stabbing gestures to each other's throats. The morality of the games were questionable but it did teach the children to gain eyes in the backs and avoid many of the "stabs". In fact, her uncle Brynden Tully got curious in the game after he realized how much Edmure's reflexes had improved and asked Hoster to join him in the game to see how harmful the game was. After a lot of convincing Hoster allowed the children to play the game once with the condition that if this game proved to be harmful all such activities would be stopped immediately and they would have to be satisfied with playing football, which Lysa had taught Edmure and the knights' children one afternoon. Edmure and the other children nodded in understanding.
Lysa Tully explained the rules to everyone and told her father and uncle to wear the white headband around their head just like everyone else. Then everyone gathered in a ring. All children turned around from where they were and the two adults followed. Hoster thought this game was silly but obeyed the rules. Then the countdown began and all children ran away in all sorts of directions in order to find a quick hiding spot. He saw some children run and hide into places that he never had once could have perceived as a hiding spot. Another child ran into a hidden passageway that Hoster had never known existed. "Father you have to hide or you will be killed and also don't trust anyone that may come your way," Edmure said before he went to hide himself in a bush. Hoster rolled his eyes and went to hide behind a nearby door. Then Hoster heard Lysa shouting "Valar morghulis!" and he shouted along several others "Valar dohaeris." As they shouted he realized that another player wasn't far away from away. Hoster Tully saw some players begin switching their hiding places. He saw some players sneak up on each other. Then he heard a voice behind him: "I'm sorry my lord," Hoster Tully turned around and took the stabbing gesture with a surprise. The child, who he remembered was the child of one of the knights, then held out his hand for Hoster's headband who Hoster handed after a few moments of hesitation. Hoster then asked how the child knew and the child told him that he had heard Hoster when he shouted then he snuck into the room by using hidden passageways. The child even showed him how the shelf in the room was a hidden door. All Hoster could think about was making up plans for how to get rid of those hidden passageways before going back to Lysa who just raised an eyebrow. "So quickly father? I thought you would last a little longer than that." Brynden had managed to survive longer through his reflexes as he avoided all the "stabbing" and "stabbed" the children in return. In the end, Edmure turned out to be the winner of the game as he had all the headbands to prove it.
The game didn't turn out to be as harmful as Hoster thought, although it was a very disturbing game, and he hadn't liked it that the children found more passageways than the ones Hoster had already mapped out after 'Hustle a Castle.'
There were more games Lysa ended up teaching the children of Riverrun and they might or may not be useful to them in the future.
