The gang has just arrived in Celadon City. Before their arrival, they came across a Mankey that liked picking fights. There was also a bipedal, bird-like Pokemon with colorful plumage.
Ash looked at it on the Pokedex.
"Hawlucha, the Wrestling Pokemon. Although it's body is small, it's proficient fighting skills enable it to keep up with big bruisers like Machamp and Hariyama."
Ash liked Mankey's fighting spirit and decided to capture it and Hawlucha, but Mankey put up a fight even though flying type Pokemon were strong against fighting type Pokemon.
Mankey then evolved into Primeape. Primeape turned out to be a lot stronger than Mankey.
Ash wasn't about to call it quits though.
"Corviknight, Drill Peck!" He ordered.
Ash then captured Primeape and was happy to have him on his team. Now they took a nice break in Celadon City.
As they were taking a break, Brock and Misty got a whiff of a nice scent in the air.
"Hey it's perfume." Misty said. "I'm going to check it out."
"So am I." Brock added. "Where there is perfume, there are beautiful girls."
Brock and Misty then rushed off. Ash didn't mind perfume; his mom kept perfume all the time. Although he couldn't understand why women were always so excited about it. It also caused his sense of smell to go crazy.
"Oh well." He said to himself. "Everyone has something they like."
Just then, he thought of something.
"Hey my mom's birthday is coming up. And since she likes perfume, I will get her some as a present."
Ash went to the perfume store, where Misty was trying out different types of perfume. He entered the store and took a good look at the perfumes.
"Which one is my mom going to like?" He asked, whispering. "I might need to ask for help."
"May I help you?" A voice behind him asked.
Ash turned around and saw a woman wearing a kimono behind him.
"Actually, yes." Ash responded. "You see, I'll like to purchase some perfume for my mom because it's almost her birthday, as she really likes it. But I know very little about perfume."
The woman smiled.
"You're a nice young boy." She said. "I'd be more than willing to help you. What does your mom like to do?"
"Garden." Ash replied. "She loves doing that."
"Then you need a perfume with garden scents." She turned to the women who were helping Misty.
"Please help this nice boy with the garden scent perfume." The ladies looked at Ash and helped him immediately. They showed all sorts of garden scent perfumes to him. Ash took a whiff of each one before he finally found the one he wanted.
"I would like to purchase the wild flower garden perfume please." He said. "It smells just like my mom's garden."
He bought the perfume, thanked the ladies and left the store.
"I like that boy." One woman said.
"So do I." Another woman added. "Not only is he really cute, he's also very sweet."
The three women then got back to work.
Ash mailed the perfume to his mother and then went to look for the Celadon Gym. It resembled a giant greenhouse and the roof was designed in the petals of a Gloom. When Ash entered the gym, he saw flowers and trees everywhere.
"Celadon Gym uses grass type Pokemon." He said. "So it's no wonder this place resembles a greenhouse."
He saw a woman sitting at a reception desk.
"Excuse me?" He called out. "I'd like to battle the gym leader."
The woman led Ash to the gym battlefield. Not only was the room filled with trees, flowers and grass it was also filled with grass type Pokemon. Ash saw a Oddish and it's evolved forms Gloom and Vileplume, Bellsprout and it's evolved forms Weepinbell and Victreebel, Exeggcute and it's evolved form Exeggutor and Tangela. He also noticed Bulbasaur's evolved forms Ivysaur and Venusaur. Ash also saw Misty and Brock with the women that worked at the perfume store.
"Erika." The woman said. "This boy wishes to battle you."
"Welcome." A blue-haired woman greeted him. She turned out to be the gym leader Erika. Ash instantly recognized her.
"You're the woman who helped me with the perfume earlier." He said.
"Ah, I remember you." Erika said with a smile. "I take it you're here to challenge me then?"
"Yes I am." Ash nodded. "I'm Ash, by the way."
"Well Ash." Erika said. "As the perfume store manager and Celadon City's gym leader, I accept your challenge."
Ash and Erika went to the battlefield.
"This battle will be between Erika the gym leader and Ash Ketchum the challenger." Erika's assistant said. "This will be a three on three Pokemon battle. Whoever knocks out the most Pokemon first wins."
Brock, Misty and the women were watching from the side lines. Some of the grass type Pokemon were watching to.
"Okay." Erika said. "Tangela go."
What looked like a bush of vines with two big eye balls came out of Erika's Poke Ball.
Ash looked at Tangela on the Pokedex.
"Tangela, the Vine Pokemon. The whole body is swathed with wide vines that are similar to seaweed. It's vines shake as it walks."
"Vulpix, I choose you." Ash said. Vulpix got ready to battle. Erika smiled.
"Even though you're using a fire type Ash." She said. "Don't think you've won."
"Don't worry Erika." Ash replied. "I know not to judge Pokemon by their types."
"Okay." Erika said. "Tangela, Vine Whip."
Tangela shot out two vines that were ready to hit Vulpix.
"Dodge with Quick Attack." Ash said. Vulpix managed to escape from Vine Whip.
"Use Stun Spore." Erika said.
A yellow powder emerged from Tangela and headed straight for Vulpix.
"Try and use Flamethrower before you're paralyzed." Ash said.
But it was too late; the Stun Spore struck Vulpix and Vulpix felt numb.
"Vulpix return." Ash said, returning Vulpix to her Poke Ball.
"Go Corviknight." Corviknight got ready for battle.
"Tangela return." Erika said. "Weepinbell go. Use Razor Leaf."
Weepinbell released a lot of leaves.
"Air Cutter!" Corviknight flapped it's wings and a strong gust with light blue S-shaped energy blades flies and slashes at the leaves.
"Now Air Slash!" Corviknight waved it's wings and two saw-like energy blades shoot out from the wings at Weepinbell.
The saw blades hit Weepinbell really hard and it fainted.
"Weepinbell return now." Erika said.
The women on the side line watched in amazement.
"Wow Ash is good." One said.
"Yeah, not only is he cute but he's strong as well." Another added.
"I must say Ash." Erika replied. "You are an impressive trainer. But this gym battle's not over yet. Gloom go."
A grass type Pokemon with drool coming out of it's mouth emerged from a Poke Ball.
Ash looked at the Pokedex.
"Gloom, the Weed Pokemon and the evolved form of Oddish. The fluid that oozes from it's mouth isn't drool. It is a nectar that is used to attract prey."
Then Gloom sprayed it's smell in Corviknight's direction, but Corviknight blew it away using it's wings so it wouldn't be paralyzed.
"Corviknight return. I'm giving Flareon a chance to battle." Corviknight was returned to the Poke Ball and Flareon took his place.
"Flareon, Flamethrower!" Flareon released a red-orange stream of fire from it's mouth.
"Quick Gloom, Petal Dance!" Gloom released multiple pink petals in a twister-like fashion at Flareon.
"Fire Spin Flareon!" Flareon opened it's mouth and a spiraling flame is released, burning the petals and striking Gloom.
Gloom was unable to stand another attack and fainted. Ash had won the battle.
Ash stroked Flareon's head.
"Thank you Flareon." He said. Flareon loved being stroked.
He saw Erika tending to her Gloom and went to see if everything was okay.
"Oh don't worry." Erika said with a smile. "Gloom will be all right. Ash, that was an excellent battle. You're a good trainer."
Ash blushed at the comment.
"And so I present you with the Rainbow Badge." The Rainbow Badge was in the shape of a flower with eight rainbow colored petals.
"Thank you." He said, accepting the badge.
After receiving the badge, Ash and his friends said farewell to Erika and her assistants then left Celadon City.
