It was around 7:00 p.m when Anna reemerged from her nap. She rolled over on her side, hoping to see Elsa again, but was slightly disappointed when she saw the spot was empty. She sat up a bit and looked around wearily. Elsa was here right? She had climbed into bed with her. Right? Did she imagine that encounter? Just as she was beginning to doubt her sanity her hospital room's door creaked open and she saw the full head of blonde hair she was missing.
"Elsa." Anna let out with a brilliant smile. Elsa looked startled for a second then smiled back just as brightly.
"Anna, you're awake. How are you feeling? Is your ankle any better?" the queen inquired. Anna looked at Elsa's hands. She now noticed the tray of food the blonde was carrying. Anna's stomach growled loudly at the sight and she grabbed it with the hand that wasn't holding her up.
"Yeah I'm fine, just starving. As for my ankle…" Anna trailed off and began to wiggle it. Elsa was about to protest but Anna quickly cut her off.
"It feels completely fine, just a tad bit sore. But I'm pretty sure I can walk on it now." The redhead responded, smiling and beckoning Elsa over. The blonde ice queen remained skeptical as she walked over and sat at the foot of Anna's bed.
"Hmm, we'll see. I'll have to get Dr. Fritz to look it over again." Elsa responded as she began to daintily dish up their plats. Tonight's meal was roasted chicken, garlic potatoes and a side of… well Elsa wasn't entirely sure what that was. Anna snorted at Elsa's concern.
"What are you, my wife?" Anna mockingly joked. The silverware Elsa was holding clang loudly against the plate. Anna looked at Elsa and much to her confusion, all color had left the queen's face. What? What did she say? Elsa then cleared her throat and handed Anna her plate, withholding eye contact from the redhead. Anna slowly took it and began to dig in as she saw Elsa do the same. The two sisters sat in a heavy silence as they ate. Every attempt at a conversation was quickly shut down by Elsa's mono syllable answers. As they finished their meal, Elsa quickly cleared the plates and other items, sitting them on a table across from the bed. They spent a few more minutes in silence, and just as Anna was about to explode from the tension, Elsa cleared her throat again.
"Anna, we need to talk." Elsa began. Uh-oh. That was never good. 'We need to talk' was always code for, 'I want to break up with you.' But why? Why did Elsa suddenly want to dump her? That joke. It was that stupid wife joke. 'I made her uncomfortable. We may be dating, but that doesn't mean Elsa would want to marry me. If we could that is.' Anna face palmed and Elsa looked confused.
"Was it that stupid wife joke that I made? Is that why you want to break up with me? I'm really sorry, I know you never said anything about wanting to marry me, it was a stupid joke after all. Not that I wouldn't want you as my wife. I wish there was a way we could marry. But just because I want to marry you doesn't mean you want to marry me and… and why haven't you stopped me from making a fool of myself yet?" Anna asked all in one breathe as she stared helplessly at the gaping queen. Yep. She was definitely getting the boot now. Elsa sputtered a bit as she tried to respond to Anna's outburst.
"Wh-what? No. No. Wha- Okay. Firstly, I was not trying to break up with you…" Elsa quickly clarified. Anna breathed a sigh of relief but her brow crinkled again when she saw the hesitation still on Elsa's face. The ice queen was biting her lower lip, eyes downcast. Anna gently reached out and cupped the queen's face, bringing it up so they could make eye contact.
"And secondly?" Anna asked. Elsa sighed.
"And secondly, there will be a marriage, just not with the person I want." Elsa said sadly as a tear escaped her eye and slowly trailed down her cheek. Anna gasped. She didn't mean…
"Elsa… what exactly are you saying?" she asked shakily.
"I tried to stop it but I couldn't." Elsa sobbed out. The blonde fell into Anna's welcome embrace and cried. Anna didn't need Elsa to explain to her. She already knew what she meant.
***FROZEN***
"Sorry Elsa, pardon my language, but this is total bullshit!" Anna angrily exclaimed. After Elsa had finally calmed down, she had climbed onto the bed and snuggled into Anna. She then began to recount, in detail, the earlier council meeting.
"I don't believe this!" Anna continued to rage. "Where is this so called, Kongelig Regelboken? I want to read it for myself. Maybe there's a way to overturn the rule." Anna huffed. The two royals were now both sitting up, Elsa in a chair and Anna on the side of her bed. Elsa sighed in frustration.
"I don't know where the Kongelig Regelboken is. I've looked for it while you were sleeping. I even got the royal book keeper to look for it. He said he hadn't seen it in years. It's missing and I don't know where to look." Elsa said dejectedly. Anna's features softened as she grabbed Elsa's hands.
"Hey. It's okay. We're okay. We knew this might happen, we were just hoping your status as queen could stop it. Listen, I love you Elsa. I love you so, so, much. Do you really think I'm going to let you go to some pretty boy prince without a fight?" Anna said with a small smile. Elsa gently returned it and let out a chocked laugh.
"I love you too Anna. You're my sun and stars. You're the brightest light in my life." Elsa responded, squeezing Anna's hands. "And just so you know, I absolutely want you for a wife." The queen spoke softly with a wide smile. Anna's smile broaden as she leaned in and placed a chaste kiss on Elsa's waiting lips. As they began to deepen the kiss, a sudden knock at the door had them reluctantly removing themselves from the embrace. Dr. Fritz popped his head through the cracked door. He saw their intertwined hands and awkwardly cleared his throat.
"I'm sorry your majesties. Was I interrupting something? I could come back later…" The doctor trailed off.
"No, come in. Please." Elsa said, graciously standing from her seat and welcoming the man in. Dr. Fritz smiled and opened the door the rest of the way, revealing a bouncing Rapunzel and a leaning Kristoff. Anna sighed and playfully rolled her eyes.
"What are you two doing here?" Anna inquired. Kristoff opened his mouth to speak but Rapunzel beat him to the punch.
"We came to check in on you like the amazing friends that we are and ran into Dr. Fritz. He told us he was about to examine your ankle again and see if you were fit to walk and we decided to tag along for that. Oh, hi Elsa!" Rapunzel finished with a cheery wave to the queen. Elsa giggled a bit and waved back.
"Hello Rapunzel, Kristoff." She greeted them both. Kristoff mock saluted making all three women laugh. Dr. Fritz was now by Anna's bed, ankle in hand.
"Okay princess, does it hurt when I do this?" he asked moving Anna's ankle in different directions.
"Um, barely. But mostly if feels fine." She responded. Fritz nodded his head in contemplation and Anna crossed her fingers, praying for a clean bill of health. After a few more minutes of probing and poking he sighed and wrote something in his notes.
"Well Princess Anna, I'm sorry to say this but… we might have to amputate." He said seriously, the wrinkles on his old face more pronounced. Anna's eyes widened in horror and she heard everyone gasp.
"Wh- wh- what? Are you serious?" she asked, close to tears.
"No." the doctor said as a smile crept to his face. "You are a very quick healer and your ankle has recovered quite nicely. You can sleep in your own bed tonight." He chuckled at the relief on everyone's face. Elsa lightly tapped him scoldingly on the arm.
"You almost gave us heart attacks." She said, laughing with relief. The doctor chuckled again.
"This old dog likes to have a little fun sometimes." He replied. After that, he gave Anna a small bag with pain medicine in it.
"Take them as needed, though be warned, they will make you very drowsy within minutes." He told her as he packed up his supplies and left. As he walked out of the room Kai rushed in. He nodded his head in acknowledgement to Kristoff and bowed to the two princesses and the queen.
"Queen Elsa, may I have a word with you. It is urgent." He said, looking at Anna then back at the queen. Elsa got his message and began to excuse herself.
"Of course Kai." She then turned to Anna with an apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry Anna but I must go. I will see you bright and early tomorrow morning." She finished. Rapunzel snorted.
"You'll see her tomorrow, but I doubt it will be bright and early. This girl can sleep through the castle burning down." Rapunzel joked. They all laughed as Anna huffed out an offended 'Hey!'
"Well that's what she has you two for. And if it isn't too much trouble, could you both escort Anna to her room for me?" Elsa asked kindly.
"Sure." Kristoff answered smiling. Elsa smiled back then nodded her head in goodbye.
***FROZEN***
Shortly after the queen's departure, the three friends began to make their trek to Anna's room. Kristoff spoke up first as he shoved his hands in his pockets.
"So, what's going on with you and Elsa? There was kinda a sad energy in the room when we first arrived." He inquired awkwardly.
"Yeah, and I could have sworn Elsa's eyes were a little pink." Rapunzel added. Anna looked around and saw servants milling about in the halls.
"Not here guys, I'll tell you when we get to my room. A few minutes later found them at Anna's door. The redhead opened it and smiled at the familiar sights. She quickly rushed over to her bed and jumped onto the plush mattress. She breathed in her sheet and smiled even wider.
"It's good to be home." She sighed. Kristoff quirked a brow and laughed.
"You were always home, just in another part." He pointed out. Anna ignored him as she rolled over on her back, staring up at her pink canopy.
"Who cares about that, Anna tell us what's going on." Rapunzel said, taking a seat on Anna's bed. Kristoff rolled his eyes and took up residence on the floor. Anna sighed again but this time out of sadness.
"You guys, we have to start getting serious about operation Elsanna." She said, grabbing a pillow and holding it against her chest.
"I can't take it seriously if we're still calling it that." Kristoff deadpanned. It was Rapunzel's turn to roll her eyes.
"What are you saying exactly." The blonde princess asked her cousin.
"I'm saying that we were hoping Elsa's queen status would let her overturn the council's decision of marriage. But now they've presented her with this new rule from some mysterious book no one can locate called The Kongelig Regelboken. My grandfather added a clause because of my father's refusal to marry out of duty and not love, that states all crowned or waiting rulers must marry before the end of their 21st year. Elsa's 21 and apparently all rulers must adhere by this book." Anna explained. Krisoff and Rapunzel both looked visibly upset by the information.
"That's crazy. If no one can locate the book, how do we know they're not just making this up?" Kristoff, ever the skeptic, asked. Anna straightened up at that.
"Yeah. You're right. They could have just lied to Elsa in order to get her to agree." Anna thought for a moment then she got an idea.
"Okay guys, same plan new addition. We need to find that book, because even if that clause is real, there may be a, you know… fine print or other clause that can overturn the marriage one. Kristoff." She called the boy's name smiling.
"Who do we know that has knowledge on just about every book or scroll in our fine kingdom of Arendelle?" she asked. Kristoff looked at her first in confusion then in understanding.
"Grand Pabi." He stated with a smirk. Rapunzel had sat there quietly watching the exchange between the two friends.
"Wait, who is Grand Pabi? And are we still going through with the plan, plan?" Rapunzel asked.
"Grand Pabi is one of the trolls we were telling you about, the troll king to be exact. He's like a thousand years old and he helped raise young Kristoff here. And yes, we are still going through with the original plan, which is another reason we have to visit him. Prince Andre of the Midlands is going to need proper paper work and official records if 'he's' going to make a last minute appearance." She smiled smugly, placing a hand on each one of her friend's shoulders.
"Elsa's council members think they've won, but the battle is only beginning."
AN: Sh*t is about to go down. Next chapter we'll hear what was so urgent between Elsa and Kai. We're about to start getting some action soon too. Plus, I want to go ahead and put your minds at ease. Anna will not be turning into a man for the ball. She's just going to dress like one. I wasn't in love with the idea in the first place, it was just me spitting balling.
And… was Hans apart of a much bigger plan? A scheme presented to him. Something more sinter that even he didn't know about? Hmmm. Someone may be reappearing soon.
