Here Comes The Sun
Chapter 25
By: The Duchess of Arendelle
The Masquerade- Part One
AN: Hey guys. Yeah. Yeah. Uh huh. Yep, I know. I suck right? I said two weeks but it's been three. Sorry, I thought it was two but then I looked and was like, oh crap, it's been three. So here you go. I wanted to write more for this chapter, but if I did, it would end up being like 5,000+ words deep. So, yeah, I'll save it for the next chapter. Sorry for any and all mistakes. I hope you enjoy this chapter!
Knock, Knock, Knock
"Queen Elsa? Princess Anna?" Came the soft yet firm voice of Kai as he stood outside the queen's chamber trying to rouse the sleeping royals. He knew the two had come back absurdly late last night. He heard the young maids whispering about it early this morning as they sat in the servant's quarters eating their breakfast and preparing themselves for the surely hectic day ahead. He also heard their scandalized exclamations as they talked about the fact the two monarchs came back mysteriously sopping wet, leaving a trail of water that lead all the way to Elsa's room. Kai chastised the maids for gossiping about the royal family, then quickly set off for Elsa's chambers before the chamber maids could arrive to help them get ready for the ball. Kai was no fool, yesterday was both girl's last day of freedom together, and he knew what had most likely occurred the previous night. It would not do for one of the servant girls to find them in a …compromising position. After his sixth or seventh time knocking, he finally heard activity behind the door. "Finally." he thought as he patiently waited for them to let him inside the chambers.
In Elsa's Room
Knock, Knock, Knock
Anna was trying her best to block out the distant sound of knocking. She was still in that place of being in this world and her sleep world. She rolled over and snuggled closer to the surprisingly warm body beside her. She sighed into Elsa's warmth and began to fall back asleep.
Knock, Knock, Knock
Seriously? Who was that? Didn't they knock she was trying to sleep and get her cuddle on? She felt the body next to her begin to stir. Elsa groggily opened her eyes as she turned her head to look at the half asleep girl snuggled against her. She smiled slightly but frowned when she heard more persistent knocks and the sound of Kai's voice as it called both her and Anna's name. Realization hit Elsa as her mind began to clear. Today was the day. The day they had been dreading for weeks. "Just a moment Kai." Elsa responded as she turned back to Anna, who had easily fallen back to sleep. "Anna, wake up. You need to go to your chambers." Elsa whispered, softly shaking the girl. Anna's nose scrunched and she moved even closer to Elsa, putting her face in the crook of the blonde's neck. Elsa smiled softly down at the adorable redhead. Even if said red hair was sticking up in every direction possible. It just added to her charm in Elsa's opinion. She tried waking the girl again, shaking her gently but a bit harder. "Anna, please. You need to wake up now." She spoke softly.
"Was'sit… huh? Wha…?" Anna responded, trying to come to her senses as she began to finally wake. Elsa continued smiling as she spoke. "You need to get back to your chambers before the maids come in." she told the redhead as she softly put her arms around her waist. They were both still lying down and this wasn't helping with getting Anna out of her room, Elsa knew that, but a part of her wanted Anna to stay, even just for a few seconds more. Anna smiled and sunk into the embrace. After a few moments of peacefully lying there, Anna looked up at Elsa with sleepy eyes. "Hi." She spoke quietly. "Hi." Elsa responded, staring back at the beautiful redhead. "So today is…" Anna trailed off. Elsa's smiled dropped a bit. "Yeah…" she said as she looked away. Anna gently caressed Elsa's face with both hands as she turned it back to look the blonde in the eyes. "I love you." She said softly, eyes shining just the slightest. "I love you too." Elsa told the redhead as she tightened her hold around the girl's waist. They laid there with their foreheads pressed together as they basked in their final moments before the ball.
Outside
Kai was a very patient man, but he was a little on the edge today and very anxious. He took out his pocket watch for what felt like the thousandth time. With a slight huff he opened the door, ready to chastise the two girls for their tardiness and complete disregard. He opened his mouth to speak, but quickly closed it when he saw the two royals snuggled into each other's embrace, clinging to one another like they would disappear if they let go. Kai stared at the two for a moment, they were completely oblivious to his presence. He had known it all along, he even told the queen he had known it. But to actually see it. To actually see the love these two girls had for each other. To see the happiness and affection and adoration the two had for each other. It brought tears to Kai's eyes. The girls had finally found their happily ever after in each other. And all that was being taken away from them now. Because of some ridiculous book. And some ridiculous rule. And some ridiculous man.
Sir Edmond Eisherbishk von Barren, who couldn't help but put his weaselly little nose in the affairs of Arendelle and the queen. What did he really wish to accomplish with this stunt? That last question ran through Kai's mind as he slowly backed out of the queen's chambers to give the two some privacy and a bit more time together. Until this moment, it was like a light mist had settled in his mind. Like he was only seeing pieces of a picture he couldn't quite put together. But now. Now the mist was lifting and he began to think. What was Edmond's endgame? And… where had he seen Edmond before. The man claimed to have moved from England to Arendelle as a boy. That part… Kai felt that part was actually true. Kai had been a boy growing up with King Alexander. They were companions and playmates, more like brothers than king and servant. He had seen many dignitaries, servants, maids, and their families pass though these castle walls. But something about Edmond, the harder he tried to remember seeing the man in the past years, the more the mist started to return to his mind until it began to turn into a heavy fog that he could barely see through. Kai grabbed his head and wobbled unsteadily as he fought his way through his own thoughts. He heard many whispers begin to swirl in his head and a dark aura settled over him. He began to feel sick, like her was going to faint at any moment. His head began to throb fiercely. He jumped a bit when he felt a hand land on his shoulder. Quickly turning around, he saw Anna standing behind him with an extremely concerned look on her face, closely followed by the queen herself.
"Kai? Are you alright?" she asked worriedly. Kai continued to look shocked and dazed for a moment, before quickly recovering and straightening up. "I'm fine your majesties, just a bit out of it. Nerves about the ball and all." He tried to joke. The two were unconvinced and Elsa's eyes widen when she saw red liquid begin to drip from Kai's nose. "Oh my God, Kai. Your nose." She told the man. Anna looked horrified as she looked at the large man who had become somewhat of a father figure to her and Elsa both. Kai looked at the girls confused as he brought his hand up to his nose. He felt warm liquid seeping out and when he brought his hand away he could see that it was stained red. Quickly he reached into his jacket's inner pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, holding to his nose. "Nothing to worry about your majesties, just a simple nose bleed. I'll be fine." He tried to assure them. Elsa shook her head. "No Kai, I think you should go see Dr. Fritz in the infirmary. You don't look too well." The blonde told the man as she stepped closer, placing a cool hand on his warm forehead. Kai shook his head back and tried to smile, even though he was pretty sure she couldn't see it passed the handkerchief. "With all due respect your highness, I've been around for a while. I'm getting old and things like this happen sometimes. I'll be just fine." He told the blonde and the redhead. Then he chuckled. "But you two won't be so fine if you're not in your separate chambers, preparing for the ball by the time Gerta gets here. I heard she's already upset with you two for tracking mud and water all over her nice clean floors last night." He joked, looking at them pointedly. This had both girls blushing and looking at Kai sheepishly. "It was all Anna's idea." Elsa said quickly. Anna gasped and looked at Elsa. The blonde shrugged her shoulders. "What? It was." She responded. "You traitor!" Anna said in mock anger as she tried to hold back a smile. "You remember what happened the last time Gerta was upset because we tracked mud in. No chocolate for a month. I don't think I could survive that again." Elsa told the redhead. "You were 8 and I was 5." Anna deadpanned. Elsa shrugged again. "Do you really think it matters to Gerta how old we are now?" Elsa retorted. Anna pretended to think for a second. "Good point."
While the two were wrapped up in their own conversation, Kai took that as his opportunity to sneak off, heading down the hallway towards the library. There was a passageway in there that lead to a secret room. Only two people knew about it and unfortunately one of them was dead. Kai was not a fool, he knew magic when he felt it.
AN: So we've arrived to the morning of the ball. Things are happening, balls are rolling. No pun intended. We move on to the actual preparations and such for the ball next chapter. The anxieties and all that. Flynn's bring his smolder, so that should be fun. Lots of angst on the way. Anyone else want to shank Edmond with a rusty ice pick. In his eyes?
