Here Comes The Sun
Chapter 29
By: The Duchess of Arendelle
AN: SO TIRED. Can't write anymore. Sorry for any and all mistakes. Probably mostly towards the end. Hope you enjoy, see you soon.
"Anna?!" Elsa called to the downed redhead across the room. A crowd had begun to form around the girl. Elsa quickly made her way over to the scene. Parting for the Queen, the patrons watched as Elsa rushed to her sister's side. Adam was on Anna's left, holding the princess upright. Elsa kneeled down beside her and grabbed her hand in concern.
"Anna, are you ok? Are you badly hurt? Did you hit your head? You may have a concussion." Elsa sprouted off, worriedly. Anna was trying to hold back a smile. She saw Adam doing the same. She knew it was wrong, making Elsa worry over her so much, thinking she was hurt; but darn it if the blonde didn't look so cute, brows furrowed and eyes big with concern. Anna cleared her throat. It was time to put her acting practice to work.
"… I- I'm fine Elsa. I just slipped. You know how clumsy I am! Here, Adam help me up- OW!" The redhead feigned like she was about to collapse back to the floor in pain. She grabbed on to Adam for 'support'. Elsa's eyes widened even more.
"Anna!" she gasped loudly. "What's wrong?"
"I- It's nothing too serious… It's just… my ankle hurts really badly. It hurts to put pressure on it. I think- I think I may have to miss the rest of the ball…" Anna spoke dejectedly. The guest collectively gasped and whispers of sympathy and awws started to break out. Anna continued.
"Adam, could you be a dear and help me to the infirmary?" she asked sweetly. Adam, to his credit, kept his sympathetic concerned face and nodded. Anna could see he was going to burst out into laughter at any moment. "Oui majesty, I'll carry you there." He told the redhead, picking her light frame up bridal style. The guest gasped again, and more than a few awws were let out, but this time it was a different aww. It was the aww you get from people when they see a cute puppy or a sweet scene. Elsa's face flushed slightly in jealousy. Had there not been a room fool of people, Elsa could have done that for Anna. Probably.
Adam seemed to be the only one to notice the queen's hot gaze on him and he winked slightly, teasing the blonde a bit. Elsa's flush darkened at the guester. She knew the boy was only messing with her, but it didn't make her any less upset. Behind her, she could hear people whispering about them. Apparently, Elsa wasn't the only one to see the wink. And they mistook Elsa's growing flush for jealousy towards her sister not Adam. Elsa felt like face palming. She knew rumors were going to spread about the kingdom from this. Turning her attention back to the two royals, Elsa saw Adam beginning to walk towards the exit with Anna in his arms. She swiftly caught up with them as regally as possible. Grabbing Adam's shoulder, she stopped the young man and looked at Anna.
"I'm coming with you." She stated, brow still furrowed in concern. Anna smiled at the blonde and shook her head. "No, you're not. You can't, you have to stay here with your guest and you know it. Don't worry sweetie, I'll be fine. I'm sure it's just a small sprain. Now go. Your audience awaits. I'll see you later tonight." She whispered with a small mischievous smile. Elsa smiled back slightly and nodded her head in understanding.
Within a few seconds the two friends were out the door, leaving Elsa standing in the middle of the ballroom. At first there was an awkward silence as all the guest stared at the queen, not knowing what to do next. The head guard who had been acting as her steward all night in Kai's absence, quickly gestured towards the band, urging them to start their festive melodies back up. They swiftly complied, and the party went back into full swing. No one noticed the pair of emerald eyes watching the entire scene from a darkened corner.
Elsa began to idly dance with more royals. Her mind was solely on Anna as she twirled around the ballroom floor with some of the world's most eligible bachelors, paying each of the men minimal to no attention. Twenty minutes passed and Elsa thought she was going to die from irritation and boredom as the 65 year old Duke from The Northern Isle danced with her. He was the uncle of the sitting King and as long as he could remember, he'd always had so many heirs ahead of him that he'd never inherit his father's beloved kingdom. So he decided to try for a different one. Or at least that's what he'd told Elsa in between falling asleep in her shoulder.
Elsa rolled her eyes discreetly as he looked up at her expecting a response. She tried to hold back her scowl as she replied to him through a clenched toothed smile.
"Oh, really? How… interesting. You know, you remind me of a young prince I once knew. He had the same… ideas as you." She told him crossly, as she anxiously waited for the song to end so she could get as far away from the old man as possible. The geezer preened as if that were a compliment.
"Oh majesty, you're too kind. You know, sometimes I still feel like a young spry laid, if you know what I mean." He started raising his eyebrows up and down suggestively and Elsa almost lost her breakfast. Just then, she saw a familiar face approach and she smile slightly.
"Excuse me, but may I cut in?" Adam asked as he grabbed Elsa's hand. The girl was still slightly ticked by the young prince's earlier antics, but she was relieved and happy for his interruption.
"Yes."
"No."
Elsa looked down at the short grey haired man. His thick glasses made his eyes look ten times bigger than what they were, and his large ears had more grey hair stick out then on his head.
"Don't you have any manners boy? Wait your turn, me and Princess Elsa are still dancing here. " He told Adam angrily, getting in the brunette boy's face, or as close to his face as his short stature would allow. Elsa sighed again. He had been referring to her as Princess Elsa the entire time, and Elsa was getting tired of correcting him. She was a queen damnit, not a princess. Just as the old duke finished chewing Adam out the band played the last notes to the song. Adam smirked at the duke as he spoke.
"I do believe your dance is over Duke Salvador. Au Revior." The brunette waved the fuming man away. With an angry red face the duke turned back to Elsa and placed a sloppy wet kiss on her hand.
"It was a pleasure Princess Elsa." He told the queen as he tried his best to bow but quickly gave up. Elsa smile tightly as him and grumbled a reluctant, "The pleasure was all mine." The duke smiled and then turned away. He shot a nasty look at Adam and mumble "French trash…" under his breath as he hobbled away. Elsa and Adam exchanged looks with each other before bursting out into giggles.
"That man seemed… charming." He said as the next song began and he took Elsa in his arms. Elsa almost snorted in laugher. "Oh yes, quite charming." Elsa responded as she tried to hide her amusement. The two royals had placed their mask back to their faces as they twirled around the ballroom. "Thanks for the save by the way." Elsa whispered.
"Anytime." Adam answered with a smile. Elsa smiled back. She felt more comfortable now than she had since this ridiculous ball began. "How is Anna doing?" she asked after a few moments of silence between the two. He smiled at her as if he knew something that she did not. "Anna is fine. I brought her to Dr. Fritz and he's checking her over. You have nothing to worry about." He assured her with that same smile. Elsa raised an eyebrow in suspicion at the young prince's behavior. Before she could ask him what was going on, she heard trumpets blare and the silence in a signal for the toast. She saw Kristoff by the refreshment tables, pouring and serving drinks and she frowned in confusion. Why was Kristoff working at the refreshment table? He was a guest tonight. Her gaze was pulled away from Kristoff when she heard glasses clanking and Rapunzel yelling "Speech! Speech!" Eugene starting chanting it too, not even know the reason why his wife was chanting it or who she was chanting it for, and not caring. Soon everybody joined in and Rapunzel handed the guard a piece of paper. The head guard accepted it and stood at the front of the room.
"Princess Anna has sent word that she wishes us to give our illustrious Queen Elsa a toast. She wrote a small speech that I shall recite. I please ask that everyone take a glass of champagne and join Princess Anna, myself, and all of Arendelle in toasting the queen." He spoke loudly and Elsa looked around as everyone grabbed a glass of champagne off the platters being served by her staff. The blonde ice queen was completely confused. Anna had never said anything about a toast. And why was Kristoff working as one of the staff when he knew he had an invitation? And why was Adam still smiling at her like that as he handed her a champagne glass? Everything seemed so strange. When the guard cleared his throat to read, Elsa's head snapped towards him. He began to read off a small piece of stationery.
"I would like to take this time to propose a toast to my dear beloved sister and ruler of our glorious kingdom, Queen Elsa. For as long as I can remember, I've loved Elsa dearly. Even through the years of isolation from each other I loved her, and I longed to be reunited with my sister. All I've ever wished is for Elsa to love me like I love her, and for her to find happiness. I thought she hated and despised me, and I just couldn't figure out why. What had I done to earn my sister's scorn so heavily? That's why when she froze this very ballroom only months ago, I sighed in relief. It all made sense. She wasn't shutting me out because she hated me. It was because she loved me so much that she was willing to give up her own freedom, her own happiness, and I soon found out, her own life, just to keep me safe. In the time to follow, I have never felt closer to Elsa. I've never felt happier. That's why today I hope Elsa finds her soulmate… her true love… in this room. Her own happiness. Because even though… um... urm…" The guard cleared his throat, unsure if he should read the next part. But the guest were all listening with misty eyes and heart warmed smiles so he continued. "…even though this was forced upon her by the Royal Council of Arendelle… I hope she finds that special someone that will make her feel as happy and loved as she makes us all feel. To finding our happiness and to my sister Queen Elsa of Arendelle."
Elsa's face was painted red as she fought back tears. Anna wrote that beautiful speech about her finding true love and happiness here when it was already too late. She had long found her tue love and happiness. It was Anna. It always was. Thoughts of the redhead was the only thing to keep here going those long days and lonely nights locked away in her bedroom. Everyone applauded and a round of Lenge leve Arendelle og Lenge leve Dronning were heard around the room. They all brought their glasses to their mouth and drank. Elsa was about to bring her glass up when she felt Adam grab her hand.
"Don't" he whispered as he surreptitiously poured his glass into a nearby plant. He gestured for her glass and she sneakily handed it over, extremely confused. "What's going on Adam?" she asked as she watched him do the same to her glass. "Are we poising people?!" she questioned in alarm and panic.
"No!" he responded quickly while shushing her. "All will be revealed soon." He whispered. Elsa shook her head, immensely perplexed. "I want to know what's going on now Adam. Will this start a diplomatic catastrophe with the 37 countries that are present?"
"No Elsa, I swear. Just… trust us. Trust Anna, it was her idea." He told the fuming blonde in front of him. At those words she began to calm slightly.
"This was Anna's idea?" she asked. Adam nodded his head. Elsa sighed and placed a hand to her face, forgetting that she was wearing a mask, and sighing again in frustration. "Ok, fine. I'll go along with this for now, but if this blows back up in our faces, I'm holding you all accountable." She grumbled. Adam nodded again and smiled. "Understood cheri."
"Adam! Adam!" Just then, the two friends heard a light female voice call for Adam from across the room. The girl was making her way over to them and Elsa couldn't help but admire how beautiful she was. She had long chestnut hair pulled up into a bun at the top while her tresses fell down her shoulders in the back. Her ball gown was golden and her brown eyes shined in the light. Her smile was radiant and the dimples showed at the sides of her cheeks. She reached them in little time and gently curtsied to Elsa. Elsa dipped her head in return and the girl's smile brightened. She then turned to Adam and hit him playfully on the arm.
"Adam! This ball has been going on for almost two hours and you've neglected to introduce me to the Queen." The brunette scolded Adam. Adam rubbed back of his neck and Elsa was sure he was looking sheepish behind his mask.
"I apologize mon cheri. Here let me do it now. Queen Elsa, this is my cousin Belle, Belle this is my friend Queen Elsa of Arendelle." He introduced the two ladies. Elsa thought how fitting Belle's name was for her.
"A pleasure to meet you your majesty." Belle told the queen with a bright smile. "The pleasure is mine Belle, and please when it's just us you may drop the formalities. Elsa is fine." She informed the girl. Belle smiled brighter. "Thank you… Elsa." She tried it out and Elsa smiled. "It's no big issue, especially since you two will be moving into our palace correct? Do you two still plan to live with us?" Elsa questioned. Belle and Adam exchanged wearied looks and Belle answered.
"Yes maj- Elsa. We do. Relations in France have deteriorated severely in the last few weeks. I was telling Adam earlier about how tension grows by the day and more and more cases of dukes and duchess's getting kidnapped and publically beheaded have started to arise. Most of our friends and staff have already fled the country, some have even come here. I fear France is about to fall on very hard times. And I- I don't know… I feel like, I'm fleeing… abandoning our people… Like cowards…" Belle trailed off as Adam wrapped a comforting arm around her. Elsa looked on sympathetically. She couldn't imagine the type of conflict Adam and Belle must be going through right now. She places a gloved hand on Belle's shoulder.
"You're not cowards. You are very brave for doing this. Uprooting your life and moving to a foreign land. I'm sorry that you must do this, but we must all make sacrifices to survive. To carry on for our loved one. I above all should know that." Elsa smiled ruefully to herself then continued. "But for what it's worth, Arendelle will be delighted to have you. I will be delighted to have you. And I know Anna will be more than delighted. She's always complaining about our lack of female presence in the castle." Elsa joked, trying to lighten the mood. Belle smiled a bit at that.
"Yes Anna, I spoke a little with her earlier. She thinks the world of you. I think you two are very lucky to have each other." She smiled. Elsa smiled back but casted a look at Adam as if asking, 'Did you tell her?' Adam understood and shook his head no. Elsa breathed a little in relief. "I feel the same way. She's a wonderful sister." Elsa responded.
After a few more minutes of idle chatter, it was time for the queen to start back accepting dances. She only had two more for the night then she would have to make her choice the following day of who she would choose.
"Come on Beast, I want to take another turn around the floor before the night is over." Belle told the prince. Adam visibly grimaced at the nickname and he looked at the amused Elsa and shook his head.
"Don't ask." He said, embarrassed.
"Don't worry, I will." She responded. Adam groaned as he was dragged away by his cousin.
Elsa closed her eyes and took in a deep breath as she prepared herself for the last two dances.
They went by fairly quickly as she let them take lead of the conversation and only answered when she asked a question directly. The last two princes were fairly unremarkable. They were your standard well brought up royals with impeccable manners and generic stories. Not at all like some of the princes she had met after Anna's accident. One of which told her fantastical stories about the Arabian dessert and different adventures he'd been on. Elsa didn't want to be entranced but she was. Especially when he told stories of his father's 'magic carpet.' Elsa didn't really believe him, but they were entertaining non the less. Snapping back from her thoughts, she heard the last song end, and sighed in relief. With a soft smile she dipped her head as the prince bowed and bid her farewell.
Elsa was about to head back to her throne and watch the rest of the ball go on when she noticed a hushed silence fall around the room. All heads were turned towards the entrance and Elsa tried to look and see what the fuss was about. The newcomer walked over to the head guard and whispered in his ear. They talked back and forth for a while until the guard finally nodded once and gestured to the band to play their horns.
"Presenting the late Prince Andre of the Midlands, third son of King Dominique and Queen Cecelia of the Midlands." The guard announced. Prince Andre bowed slightly to him and turned to address the room.
"I apologize for my extreme tardiness. My ship was having major complications. I am Prince Andre of the Midlands and it is a pleasure to be here." Andre spoke in a light voice. A voice that seemed a bit too soft to be a man's but with a hard edge that could pass as one as well. Just a very soft spoken one. Elsa was still yet to get a good look at him.
'Who is this 'Prince Andre?'
AN: There you go. Sorry I'm so tired, been writing this for like two hours now. I didn't want to stop here but I have to before it turns into incoherent junk. (Already there.) Questions, comments, concerns? Leave a review or PM me and I'll try to get to you as quickly as possible. Bye!
