Author's Note: So fun fact – this wasn't actually going to be the second chapter. However, the more I read what I had already written as the actual chapter two – I decided that this will be better fitting. Please do let me know what you all think.
Warning: AU of the movie series. I apologize, my timeline was off when I spoke about it in the first chapter (it doesn't stop at Spider-Man: Homecoming as I originally stated it did). It was only after I published it that I realized I was a bit off. I meant to say that this story roughly takes place between Captain America: Civil Wars and Doctor Strange. Please note, I updated the first chapter with this correction as well.
P.S. I do not have a Beta so I apologize in advance if some of my writing is off. Thank you!
Disclaimer: I do not own Avengers. I do not own Spider-Man. I do not own Marvel, Sony, or any other characters associated with either franchise.
The Unofficial Avenger's Field Trip Mission
Chapter 2
Tony Stark gazes out of his living room, watching the clouds move slowly in the sky. Currently, he was on one of the upper floors in the Stark Institute building. A glass of whiskey in his hand, sipping it now and then. He was lost in his thoughts thinking about the previous "battle" that occurred between him and his teammates.
He honestly wishes it hadn't occurred. He felt a tad bit lost without some of his teammates present. Without meaning to, he grew attached to every single one of them. It was difficult not to. Sure, they all had their issues here and there but who doesn't?
Sighing to himself, he wished, one of his teammates, in particular, could see the wrong they're doing. Steve played such a big role in his father's life. Whether Howard was an absent father or not to him, Steve was his remaining link to his dad. To know that Steve preferred the Winter Soldier over him, the same man that caused his parents' death...It hurt and it hurt so very badly.
Someone clears their throat behind him startling him out of his thoughts. He turns around to see Pepper Potts, his beloved CEO, and fiancé.
"Pepper!" He exclaims, eyeing her down as he notices that she has multiple file folders in her hands. He internally grimaces, hoping the strawberry blonde-haired woman didn't just come to hand him the paperwork. He really did hate being handed things. She knows this, he muses to himself.
"Tony." Pepper smiles at him, coming closer to him to press a kiss on his cheek.
"Pepper—Please don't tell me you're about to hand me those documents." Emphasizing the s after documents.
"Of course not. I'm about to hand you one document." Pepper smirks at the man in front of her. She laughs at him as she can see the annoyance in his eyes. Taking one of the file folders out, she hands it over to Tony who pouts and takes it from her.
"Now Pepper...Love…" Tony was really hoping he could try to convince Pepper to get out of reviewing whatever it was that she gave him. Maybe he could give her the job of reviewing it. Oh, wait. He did. He made her CEO of his company. That's right.
"No, Tony. You need to review this specific document for tomorrow."
Tony groans out. "Run it by me once more, will you, Pep? What exactly is tomorrow again?" Pepper raises her eyebrow at him.
"It's when Midtown High comes to visit our building." Tony looks at her confusingly.
"Midtown High? Isn't that where all of the brainiacs go?"
"They're high schoolers, Tony. Yes, they're all smart but please try not to call them brainiacs to their face. You know very well, you'll be on the lookout for any future potential workers amongst the group."
"We'll come back to this topic. I swear we will, but why does that name sound so familiar…" Tony rubs his chin, with a thinking look on his face. He sips some more of his whiskey as he says that.
"It is familiar. That's Peter's school." Tony widely blinks at her.
"Come again?" Pepper raises her eyebrow at Tony wondering what sort of game he was trying to play. He should know Peter's school by now. He's constantly here every week after school for his "internship".
"Midtown High is Peter's school, Tony. You know this. You instruct Happy to pick him up every time he has to come here after school."
"Well—yes. I know that," Tony mumbles out while staring at her abrasively. He couldn't recall any document that she showed him recently - and it was a lot of documents, mind you - not a single document had Midtown High listed on it. He would know as he always made sure to pay extra attention to that school in specific. Call him biased but he wanted to make sure Peter was properly flourishing in an outstanding school.
"Then, what?" Pepper stares at Tony waiting for a response.
"I know you constantly give me paperwork and lists, lots and lots of lists, of each touring group of our facility. But correct me if I'm wrong and I highly doubt that I am, but I don't remember ever seeing or approving a tour for Midtown High students recently."
"That's because you didn't. I did." Tony once more blinks at the love of his life. Usually, he is the one to approve the tours. It's nothing against his love but he always preferred knowing exactly what sort of group was coming into his building. Being kidnapped and betrayed by someone he thought the world of would do that to a guy.
"Come again?" Pepper huffs to herself, getting a bit upset at Tony for pretending to forget again.
"Tony, don't stand there and act as if you hadn't made me CEO of Stark Institutes."
"Well-no sweetie, I didn't forget." Tony meekly says. Not wanting Pepper to get upset at him. The last time she got upset with him, she made him do his own paperwork and had others replace her to hand him any important documents to review. He would much rather Pepper handle the paperwork. Truly. He hated being handed things.
"I didn't reach out to them," Pepper started her tale of how the Midtown High School tour came about.
"Well, then who did?" Tony questions, unsure of her response.
"Phil came to me last week…" Tony cuts her off.
"I'm sorry but Phil? He is still known as Agent. Not Phil. Who is this Phil person?" Pepper smiles at her fiancé's petty jealousy. She takes the whiskey from his hands and puts it on the small table near them.
She walks back towards Tony and puts her arms around his neck. He returns the gesture, putting his hands on her waist. He pulls her closer to him as she rests her head against his shoulders.
"Tony, Phil came to me. Director Fury apparently has a mission for Peter."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Director Fury-"
"No." Tony pulls back slightly and looks into Pepper's eyes.
"What does Director Eyepatch want with the kid? He's not an Avenger. I would know, I was the one he rejected when I offered the position to him."
"I don't know Tony. I couldn't exactly stop them from making the plans. They managed to bypass all of our protocols and have this event listed." Tony's eye's darkened at that.
"I don't recall giving Fury administration permission to my building. Friday, who authorized this so-called event?" Pepper looks at Tony confused. A bit unsure of how to handle this particular situation.
"Analyzing request" Friday replies.
"Tony...Tony, what's going on?"
"The problem is Pepper, someone has access to my database. Nobody is supposed to have access. I'm the one that's supposed to be doing the hacking when it comes to anything SHIELD-related. Banner doesn't even do it. I mean...he could but he's at times a goody two shoes. Doesn't like to play dirty. Despite everything, he has gone through including turning into that amazing huge green man. Back to the topic on hand-It's all me. For SHIELD to somehow manage to not only bypass my system without me knowing it or even Friday knowing it, then that's a problem." Pepper frowns realizing Tony was right. No one was supposed to be able to get into their system so easily.
"Boss, I found the information."
"Talk to me, Fri."
"The field trip for one Midtown High School of Science for Extraordinary Kids has been scheduled for tomorrow, July 19, 2016. Authorized by N.F." Tony growls, allowing a brief look of annoyance to fly past his face.
"Friday, contact Director Fury for me."
"Yes, boss." *Calling Director Fury*
In two rings, Tony hears the phone being picked up.
"You're losing your touch, Stark. I would have pegged you to be calling me as soon as we got into your system."
"Yeah... We'll get back to that. Just know I'll be reprogramming everything. No one will be allowed in. Now besides that, I need to know, why the kid?" Tony angrily expresses out.
Director Fury stays quiet. He's had his suspicions that Stark cared a lot more for the spider kid than he let on.
Tony continues. "He's just a kid, Fury. You don't need him for any missions,"
"I need him there as backup. I'll be having Hill and a few others around as well. They won't let anyone harm an innocent person if things go south. SHIELD will be actively monitoring everything,"
Tony makes noise upon hearing this. The fact that SHIELD still had access to his building is rubbing him the wrong way.
"He's just a kid. My personal intern, Fury." Tony retaliates, anger building up in his tone of voice.
Nick laughs out loud. The hypocrisy was showing for Stark.
"If he's just a kid then why did you drag that same kid to Germany to fight other heavy powered-up heroes? Wasn't he just a kid then, Stark?" The annoyance leaks out of Fury's voice by the end of his spiel. He wasn't going to allow Tony Stark of all people to tell him what to do. He needed to make sure this spider kid was worthy enough to be on his team.
"Tell me the truth, Stark. You're just worried because you care for the kid." Tony makes a face at hearing this while Pepper rolls her eyes at him knowing Fury was right.
"Now, hang on a minute!" Director Fury interrupts and continues talking as if Tony didn't just try to interrupt him.
"While it dawns on you that you know I'm right, the field trip will occur. I needed to use Parker to run interference on something SHIELD is actively looking into. By allowing him and his school to visit your building while having our inside men, we'll be able to get a better understanding of what we're working with. You have eyes everywhere. Cameras, casually dressed security guards, the whole nine yards. Your building has the best position and location to intercept anything from occurring. We have Intel that an individual that needs to be taken care of will be popping up at this so-called field trip." Tony has anger evident in his eyes knowing he's intentionally putting the public and his workers in danger.
"Now when exactly was SHIELD going to tell me this little tidbit? Shouldn't I, as the owner of this building, have been informed earlier!? Even better as an Avenger?! I could've called in the others!" Tony bites out.
"The others? What others, Stark!? Half of the team is currently hiding out and on the run. The other half has the majority being retired! I did what I had to. Whether you agree with me or not is not a matter of my concern right now. We need this individual taken in as soon as possible. As I said before, we will have agents on standby in the immediate area. Besides Stark, if you consider him Avenger worthy. I need to see it to believe it."
