Chapter 10: Drama on Stage II
Colette was backstage as she was looking at her compact mirror and fixing her makeup, seemingly minding her own business.
However, all the time, she was upset due to still being an understudy and her previous attempt to secure her desire role having failed.
"That stupid Joey! That stupid Monsiuer Lancer! I would've have better chemistry with Danny!..."The spoiled brat thought, still convinced that she was the better choice.
"Whatever, I just have to play it smarter..."She thought as she was sure that by opening night, she would be Hermia to Danny's Lysander.
That's when she heard loud footsteps
"COLETTE!..."Star yelled as she angrily marched toward her.
"ESTELLE JOY STRONG! I AM STILL TALKING TO YOU! DON'T IGNORE ME AND DO SOMETHING YOU WILL REGRET LATER!..."Stella called out, but her yells fell on deaf ears, mostly since her daughter ran faster than her.
Since Star had been running, she was already in front of Colette, who frowned at the sight of her.
"Vhat do you want, Estelle? If you are looking for beauty tips, then I suggest you look elsewhere as I have no reason to waste my time helping a lost cause..."Colette said in a mocking tone, pointing at everything about Star.
Star didn't respond with the usual snappy remarks or one liner meant to get under the fake redhead's skin.
Instead she simply glared at her, Colette almost swore that the blonde's eyes turned red with rage. Before Colette knew it, Star punched her out of her seat, making her "beautiful" face land unceremoniously on the cold, hard, floor.
This in turn made everyone working backstage to turn their heads in the direction of the two girls. Some cheered, others looked upset. Only two words came to the minds of everyone who just witnessed what transpired and they knew that things were gonna get intense now.
"Cat fight!..."Some guys went.
"Uh-Oh. This isn't gonna be pretty!..."Mikey said, stepping back as he felt that a major brawl was gonna happen.
Colette recovered from the shock of the attack, and got angry.
"Vhat is wrong with you?!..."The fake red-head yelled, as she got up. "How dare you?!..."She yelled, her red face almost matching her hair.
"That's what I should be saying to you! That's the least you deserve, you psychotic witch!..."Star yelled at her angrily as she glared at her stepsister.
"Are you out of your mind, you crazy blonde harpy?! I was just sitting here minding my own business until you decide to assault me!..." Colette yelled, while her step-sister continued glaring daggers at her.
"That's rich coming from a lunatic like you!..."Star said, frowning.
"Vhat did you just say?..."Colette snapped, but her step sister didn't back down.
She continued to glare and berate her wicked step-sister.
"This is a new low, even for you! But I guess I can't really be surprised, since you'd do anything to get rid of me!..." Star shouted.
"Vhat in the world are you talking about?!..." Colette asked.
"You sent that plant I was ALLERGIC to in order to put me in the hospital so that I'd have to give YOU the part, didn't you?!..." Star accused.
"Hmph... while I applaud anyone who wishes to expose how ugly you truly are, it was not me..." Colette stated.
"Don't lie! I bet if we find the logo of where you bought that plant, we'll track it down..." Star said.
"Vhat plant?..." Colette asked.
"The same one that Danny had to put outside to protect me..."Star said as she went to the door and point at it.
"Again... What plant?!..."Colette demanded. "I have no idea what you're babbling about!..."She complained.
Star marched towards where the plant was tossed away and pointed.
"This pla-..."She looked down and, to her shock, it was gone.
"What the? Where'd it go?!..."She exclaimed, while her step-sister began mocking her again.
"Clearly, you've gone crazy... perhaps I should take your place..." Colette said.
"Over my dead body!..." Star growled and was ready to pounce on the fake redhead and knock out her teeth.
However, before she had the opportunity to do so, Stella finally caught up and got between her two children. She was looking worn our from her sudden running.
"Curse these 4 inch heels!..."She complained as she had to trouble running in them and her feet were killing her.
However, that was the least of her worries as her daughters were in a fight.
"Mama, help me! Estelle has lost her mind!..."Colette yelled dramatically.
"The only thing I lost is the patience I have for you!..."Star yelled at her.
"That's vhat I should be saying towards you, you peasant!..."Colette yelled.
"In what world, Colette?! Get it through that thick head of yours! I won this role fair and square! Danny's MY boyfriend, so BACK OFF!..." Star yelled, ready to pummel her stepsister into oblivion.
Stella got between them, keeping them at arm's length and preventing any more conflict from continuing on her watch.
"That's enough, you two! Knock it off or you're both in big trouble!..."The blonde woman said, trying to sound both motherly but stern at the same time.
"ME?! SHE'S THE ONE WHO TRIED TO POISON ME!..."Star yelled.
"I DID NO SUCH THING! YOU ARE THE SAVAGE WHO ATTACKED ME! MAMA, YOU SHOULD PUNISH HER! SHE EVEN BROKE MY NAIL!..."Colette demanded, in her usual bossy tone.
"I did no such thing! But that can easily be fixed!..."The blonde said angrily, raising her fist in warning to make sure Colette got the point.
This of course made the bratty teenager roll her eyes with disdain.
"Such barbaric behavior! I can't understand what Danny sees in you!..."Colette sneered.
"Something you'll never have: Real love!..." Star growled.
"Keep telling yourself that, Estelle! Sooner or later he'll see I'm the better choice!..." Colette replied condescendingly.
"When pigs fly! And I mean the NON-GHOSTLY kind of pigs!..."She added, since her stupid step-sister would use any excuse to get Danny.
"You have no idea how wrong you will be in the end, mon petite soeur! Either way, Danny will be mine... ghost pigs or otherwise!..."Colette said, acting haughty and getting under the blonde girl's skin once more.
"You're dead meat!..."Star yelled, ready to pummel her but their mother got in the way.
"I am serious! Cease this foolishness immediately or you BOTH will be grounded indefinitely!..."Stella yelled again, trying to keep them apart from each other.
"You can't ground me! I don't even live with you!..." Star pointed out.
"No, but your father would on account that you're still causing trouble on school grounds!..."Stella pointed out.
Star, hearing that, backed away. Johnathan may not care for Colette, but Star assaulting someone on school property would not look good on her, regardless of the reasons.
"But she tried to poison me with that pigweed!..."She reminded, but her step-sister rolled her eyes.
"Really? You still think I did this? Please... if I did, Mama and Papa would easily find out I made ze purchase..." Colette went, clearly not upset if Star did get the allergic reaction.
"While I do want to give you the benefit of the doubt...If you did do such a prank, you would be in VERY BIG trouble, young lady!..." Stella said in a warning manner. "Not only for endangering your sister's health but also for buying something without permission, since you are still on thin ice because of that massive bill for your Halloween costume!..."She reminded.
This made Colette cringe, knowing full well she was still on thin ice with her stepmother, even if she was the one who was vouching for her right now.
Star, still angry, still believed that her step-sister was the guilty party in this mess.
"I don't know how you did it, but I know that it was you!..." Star said as she narrowed her eyes. "And when I have proof, you're going to regret it!..."She said, sounding furious.
"Hmph! If you frown so much, you will get wrinkles. Get over yourself, Estelle. Your paranoia will be your undoing!..." Colette went, as he tried storming away.
Star would have followed, but her mother forbade her.
Stella groaned as she pinched the bridge between her eyes in mental and physical exhaustion, as she tried to balance being a mother of two daughters from two marriages.
It was more exhausting than she had expected it to be.
"When did motherhood become so complicated?..."She thought, before taking a deep breath.
"Okay you two ..." Stella said, "I had enough of this. Can you just please let bygones be bygones...at least for now?..."She tried but both of her daughters looked at her as if she grew two heads.
"NEVER!..." The teenagers bellowed at the same time.
"Well, it was worth a try..." Stella thought
"Fine. Then this here's what's going to happen, I don't want to hear any more arguments, this ends here and now! You're family! You should at least try to get along!..."She said.
"Hey, I NEVER wanted her to be my stepsister!..."Star argued.
"The only thing we agree on..."Colette said in a snobby manner, not even bothering to look at her.
"I'm serious..."Stella said, feeling a migraine.
Danny, Sam and Tucker, who came back just in time to see Mrs. Bevier pull the two girls apart, were silent as they continued to witness this family drama, unsure when to step in.
"Huh, and here I was expecting more blood-shed..."Tucker commented.
Sam would have ribbed him, but stopped as she heard what he said.
"Eh, to be honest, so did I..."She admitted.
Danny ignored this as he continued to watch his girlfriend argue with her mother over her step-sister's guilt. All the while, he felt that there were eyes on them, and not from the people watching the family spat.
"Strange...what was that?..."He thought, while his girlfriend kept yelling at her mother.
"Mom, you can't seriously believe this spoiled brat over me, can you?!.."Star said, still convinced of her step-sister's being guilty of the crime.
"She certainly would, because I am innocent and you attacked me without provocation!..."Colette said, sounding ticked.
"Innocent?! You mean as innocent as a fat cat in a canary cage, you witch!..."Star snapped, snarling her teeth.
"Who are you calling fat, you insolent commoner?!..."Colette barked, more insulted by that than the accusation.
"Too subtle, huh?..." Star mocked.
"You never been innocent of anything other than being an unwanted pest! Plus, you're just trying to weasel your way out the consequences of your actions like always, you rabid poodle!..."Star snapped.
"Vhat did you just call me?! I should have you sued for attacking me and for slander!..."Colette snapped at her.
"Ooh, big words coming from a girl who can't even spell her own name!..."Star mocked.
"You take that back!, I can too spell my name!..."Colette yelled."After all it's far more prestigious than just… Star..."She said as she stomped her foot in a childish manner.
"Yeah, too many L's and E's, very prestigious..."Star said sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
"Such a BIG mouth! It iz no wonder zhat you were kicked out of the popular group!..." Colette yelled.
"Was that supposed to hurt?..." Star laughed. "Leaving the A list was the best decision I ever made! If they took you, then it was worth it..."She added, striking a nerve in her step-sister.
"Why you little..."Colette yelled, wanting to tear her hair out.
"ENOUGH!..."Stella shouted at the top of her lungs, nearly deafening most people here.
"Sheesh, and I thought Star and her dad can be intense!..."Danny thought, as the girls kept arguing.
"This ends now!..."Stella yelled at her daughters.
"But she started it!..."Colette yelled as she pointed at her step-sister.
"No, she did! She tried to poison me!..."Star yelled, as she pointed back.
"I did not! But I am starting to wish that it had been my idea!..."Colette said.
"See?! She just admitted it!..."Star pointed out.
"I did not! You are ze one who started zhis fight, you uncouth barbarian!..."Colette yelled as she was ready to attack her, had her step-mother not grabbed her by the arm and pulled her back.
"I don't care who started it! I'm ending it!..."Stella said in a harsh tone.
"What?!..." The two went in unison.
"Look, I have to go to a nail appointment in an hour, Colette...why don't we both talk about this in private? I want to hear your side of the story and then we will look into how that plant got into this school and who really sent it..."Stella said, still thinking that she was innocent but also knowing she and her daughter shouldn't be around each other right now.
"What?!..." Star snapped. "You can't be serious Mom! It's obvious she did it!..."She yelled.
"I did not!..."Colette shouted, but their mother got between them again and tried to calm them down.
"If she did it, I'll find out. Don't forget, we are rich enough to pay for an investigator or anyone who can deal with this. But for now, you two shouldn't be anywhere near each other..."Stella said, wanting this fight to end.
She then turned to face her step-daughter, still looking stern but not accusatory either.
"Come Colette, let us leave before one of you needs an ambulance..."The blonde woman ordered.
"Finally, you make some sense..." Danny thought as he witness this.
It didn't seem right to him that it was Colette, causing him to notice something amiss. Especially since he could still feel some strange presence here...but it wasn't a ghost.
"What was that I felt?..."He thought, while his friends saw this.
"I still say she's guilty..."Sam said, not buying Colette's supposed innocence.
"5 bucks says that Star gives her a black eye when her mom isn't looking..."Tucker whispered to her.
Before Sam could react to that, Mr. Lancer, who had just returned from the men's room, saw them and frowned.
"You two, over here! You got to work on your next scenes. On the double..."The teacher/director ordered.
The two teens heard this and groaned.
"Darn it..."They both muttered as they were pretty much dragged by the director to go and practice their scenes again.
Danny paid no mind to this, as they had bigger problems to deal with. He just wasn't sure HOW big yet.
A few moments later
Stella soon left with Colette, who scowled at Star, who scowled back. Once they were both gone, the blonde girl was livid.
Star practically growled right now, fuming with in pure anger as she felt the urge to break something right now.
"I can't believe that she's on HER side! I actually thought that mom was finally starting to wise up. One step forward... TEN STEPS BACK!..."Star complained loudly, feeling that all of the progress that her mother had been doing was back to square one.
Her boyfriend, who had approached her, had tried to calm her down.
"Uh, Starlight. I know that Colette is an evil witch with no conscience to speak of and is totally irredeemable in every possible way...but I don't think that she did it..."Danny said, surprising even himself for saying those words.
His girlfriend sent him an incredulous look, even shocked at what her boyfriend was insinuating.
"YOU'RE defending her too?! Come on! You're not thinking of simply letting her get away with what she almost did to me, right?!..."Star exclaimed, hoping that her boyfriend was making a bad joke.
The dark haired boy shook his head.
"I'm NOT defending her, not at all, but think about it. If she did do this, wouldn't she admit it to you by now, even if in private, just to mess with you?..." Danny asked.
Star stopped and thought about.
"That's... true..."She admitted, realizing that her boo may be right about that.
"And like she said, if she had bought that plant, her mom and everyone would be able to find out eventually..." Danny said. "Colette may not be very bright but even she knows not to leave a trail if we wants to get you out of the way..."He said.
"We're talking about the same girl who paid over 12K for a HALLOWEEN COSTUME and expected to get away with it!..."Star reminded.
"True, but that's Colette being a snob. You know that when she's trying to cause us trouble, she's more sneaky...like a snake..."He said.
Star knew that he had a point, but she still refused to believe that her wretched stepsister was innocent. She had one other option.
"But what if she got someone else to buy it for her, like how she made Joey or those stupid wrestlers do her dirty work just to get to you?..."Star pointed out.
"I know that's a possibility but...I just can't shake the feeling that something else is at work here. I just don't know what exactly..." Danny said, having gotten a strange feeling.
His girlfriend connected the dots.
"Did you sense a ghost?..."Star asked.
Her boyfriend shook his head.
"No, I didn't sense a ghost but...I dunno...It was like I felt something off earlier. It was when I was taking that lousy plant outside...I felt a weird presence but I didn't think much of it since I was worried about you..."Danny said. "I felt it again just now, when you were arguing with your mom and that spoiled brat..."He said.
"For real?..."Star asked.
Danny nodded.
"Yeah, I didn't sense any ghosts but...I just got this gut feeling...like the time we were at the water park and someone tried to hurt you..."He reminded.
His girlfriend thought about it and knew that she still couldn't rule out that possibility. Still, she had to say this.
"I still wouldn't put it pass her..."Star said.
"Me either, but that doesn't mean that she did it..."Danny said, still feeling that something else is happening here.
"Let's just try and be on our toes. If Colette did do it, we'll find out, but if it's something else...we gotta keep our guard up..."He said.
"Fine... but if it happens again and we get proof that she really is the culprit, then she's waking up in a hospital bed, regardless of how long my dad may or may not ground me..."Star said, arms crossed.
"Fair enough, just try not to do anything to get you grounded for too long. I don't wanna spend weeks where I can only spend time with you at school again..."He said, though he was still worried about her well-being.
The couple soon left together, both still upset about recent events and still unsure if Colette is truly the guilty party or not. Both teens new that whatever just happened today wasn't over.
Not by a long shot!
Later
After rehearsals and making sure that Star was okay, Team Phantom had separated after rehearsal, and went to do their own thing.
Sam had left the school and was now in the park, trying to practice her lines, since she didn't want to go home and deal with her parents and the latest fashion disaster that they wanted to force on her, despite her multiple objections. Objections that they ignored and still wanted their daughter to wear the bright and frilly dresses that they had chosen for her.
If she didn't want to wear it for the show, she certainly doesn't want to at home!
"When are they gonna accept me for who I am?! Or at least have another kid so they could focus their HUGE amount of free time on him/her instead of me?! ..."Sam thought as she sometimes felt like her parent's personal dress up doll than their actual daughter.
The fact that the costume designer didn't look like he'd be okay with making any "improvements" also upset her.
Sam tried not to think about them, and began reciting the lines out loud, hating this almost as much as those stupid dresses. Even worse, Tucker, Star and Danny were busy and that meant that there was no one to help her right now.
"I should've waited outside..."Sam said out loud, and made a face over what she would have to say to Dash on stage.
She read the script again and nearly hurled over the lovey-dovey lines that she was going to be forced to say to the jock once they are on staged together.
"I REALLY hate this more than the morning sun!..."She grumbled, hating this more and more and barely resisted the urge to tear the paper apart.
"Talking to yourself, you're either an actress, or a total psycho. Not that there is much of a difference..."Was head.
Sam turned and saw that it was Christopher, with an amused look on his face. Sam, however, wasn't amused.
"Speak a word of what you saw and prepare to wake up in a hospital!..."The goth girl snapped at her, no patience at all.
Christopher frowned, while raising his hands up in a defensive manner.
"Good afternoon to you too..."He said sarcastically.
"What's up with you, Sam? Usually we have some witty banter between us before you lose your temper..."The boy complained.
Sam rolled her eyes and sighed, knowing that this isn't his fault.
"Sorry, Christopher, but I'm having the worse week ever!..."She grumbled.
"What happened?..."Christopher asked, taking a seat next to her and willing to give an ear to listen.
Sam sighed and told him what happened, namely the part she plays and how she got roped into this nutty school play that she never wanted to be apart of. Not to mention, who her so-called love interest is in the play.
Once she was done, the blonde male vegan nodded along from hearing this news.
"Man, that bites..."Christopher commented.
"No kidding! It's bad enough I gotta say these lovey dovey lines to Dash of all people...ew...but I also gotta act like some dainty, girly fairy on stage and wear a stupid girly costume in front of everyone at school. It's so humiliating!..."Sam said, mortified with what she has to go through for the play.
Christopher sent her a sympathetic look and tried to cheer her up.
"Look, I know that we can't do anything about the lines, but Titania doesn't have to be girly if you want her to be something else. You can just say your lines in a way that you're more comfortable with..."He suggested.
"What are you talking about?..."Sam asked, confused.
"I'm a year older than you, I've already read the play and I'm a lot more familiar with it..."Christopher said.
"I also know that your character, Titania is actually very strong willed, independent and very powerful. She's not afraid to fight others, including her husband, the fairy king and her fairies always follow her commands. She also pretty stubborn when it comes to getting something she wants. She sounds familiar doesn't she? Reminds me of you..."Christopher said, winking with a thumb's up.
Sam blinked upon hearing this. As she started to question her previous view on the character she's playing, her mind was opened to new possibilities.
"Wow...I didn't know that, I just avoid anything involve cutesy stuff..."Sam said. "Can I really make this role work for me?..."She asked.
"I don't see why you can't, if you really try at it..."Christopher said, in a rather mischievous tone.
"Are you sure? I could get in trouble..."She said, while the vegan boy shrugged.
"I do a lot of reading and know the story well. I can tell you this much about the story...it has a lot of different interpretations of each of the characters. So I think you'll do just fine. Plus, if anyone can make a fairy look more spooky, it's definitely you..."He said, with a smirk.
"Really?..."Sam asked, and he nodded.
"Yeah. Not only that, but I know that fairies aren't always those cute and quirky little creatures the cartoons and movies want us to think they are. In the original folklore, most fairies were far from the sweet and innocent beings and some of them were down right evil and destructive..."He said.
"Really?..."Sam asked and the boy nodded.
"Yeah, far from idiots who obsess over nickels or scantily clad girls with wings..."He said, before he asked for her phone.
Sam handed it and Chris went online and found the page he was looking for.
"Here it is, old info on our winged friends..."Christopher said.
"What's this?..."Sam asked, before she saw a website.
There, she saw a spooky looking image of what vaguely looked like a fairy, but Sam could hardly call it cute...which she actually enjoyed.
"This website talks about how in old times, fairies could be vicious and malevolent. They were forces of natures or even spirits of the dead, like ghosts, depending on what folklore you are listening to..."The blonde said, grinning as he showed it to her.
Sam's eyes widened upon hearing that and almost smiled as she continued reading what was on her phone as Christopher kept explaining the cultural folklore on all things fairies.
"Not all of them were cute looking too, some of them could be pretty monstrous. Not exactly the attractive Italian girls in short skirts on television or the "grandmotherly" kind that grant wishes in the movies..."He said with a smirk as he then scrolled down to a particular section in the website.
"It says here that some fairies apparently weren't really nice, and were not above causing trouble for humans, like setting fires, stealing, kidnapping people, making livestock sick and leading travelers astray. Not only that, but they could also get violent, even attacking people or luring unsuspecting people to their doom..."He explained, with a smirk on his face as he was clearly enjoying talking about this.
Sam seemed fascinated about hearing this and even looked a bit excited about these kinds of fairies.
"Now that's my kind of fairy..."Sam said, wishing that this was the kind of fairy she was playing for her role.
"Mine too, especially the mischief making kind..."Christopher said, reading up more.
"I know that nowadays, the word "fairy" doesn't sound scary to people, but centuries ago and even today in some remote places, that word can make people think that word is cursed, making them fill with horror, regret and even want to pee themselves in fear..."He explained.
Sam seemed intrigued upon hearing this and was beginning to change her mind about her role. It made her less upset but just a little bit.
"Okay, so maybe being a fairy itself isn't so bad, but it doesn't change the fact that I still gotta say these lousy lines and wear a lousy costume on opening night, a far cry away from the much more interesting ones..."Sam muttered, sounding bitter.
Christopher, however, smirked as he just thought of another idea for Sam.
"Then do it...but do it in a way that it's more in tune with your new view on fairies..."He said.
"That's gonna be hard, since I already got my costume and the jerk who made it made it clear that he does not want ANY alterations to his work..."Sam said.
"Then find another costume..."Christopher said, like it was obvious.
"If only it was that simple..."Sam muttered.
"It IS that simple. I mean...there is no law that you HAVE to wear the costume you are given. I think that as long as you vaguely pass for a fairy, everything else will fall into place..."Christopher said. "And from what I see...as long as you remember the lines, you got it covered...and I don't recall any rule against your own costumes..."He said in a hinting way.
Sam gasped, realizing he was right and she could make the role her own. Her eyes widened once she realized what he was getting at and how to fix the play.
"Oh man, why didn't I think of that?..."She said, seeing her current situation at a whole new perspective now. "Chris, you're a genius!..."Sam said, looking relieved and even happy right now.
The blonde vegan seemed happy to hear this and smiled, but couldn't keep his mouth shut either.
"Well, what can I say? I'm not just a pretty face ya know. Plus, I apologize if this sounds dated but I can't just sit by and watch as a lady in need, especially a hot one that's dressed in black..."He said, trying to sound flirtatious.
Sam playfully rolled her eyes at his flirting. He does this a lot but for once she'll let it slide.
"Slow down, Romeo. I just said that you're a genius but not by that much..."Sam said, being a bit witty right now.
"Can't blame a guy for trying..."Christopher said with a shrug, smiling at her quip.
"For real though, if you make the changes, you should be okay..."He said in a more supportive tone, giving off a gentle smile.
Sam smiled back and ideas came to her.
"I can make my version of Titania however I want her to look..." She whispered to herself.
The goth girl smirked and even the giggled little bit, feeling much better about this whole situation.
"Hopefully, you'll love as lovely as you want to look..." Christopher said, and the goth girl sent him an eye-roll.
Still, she was happy that there was a way out of looking and acting like a "girly and dainty" fairy and could make her own version of it.
"This is really great and all, though this only helps how I look, not how I act. I gotta go back to practicing my lines and there is no way I'm gonna do it with Dash! It's hard enough keep my lunch down saying these lines when he's NOT here. I don't want to practice with him..."Sam said, since she still had that problem to deal with.
"Maybe I can help you in that department, if you want. Like I said, I'm familiar with the play and your parts of the story..."Christopher offered.
Sam thought about it and simply shrugged her shoulders.
"Alright, but don't expect me to sound all lovey-dovey when I say these lines. Also, I am not rehearsing any really sappy scenes, got it?..."Sam said, hating the idea of kissing someone she doesn't love.
"As you wish..."Chris said, bowing to her playfully.
The two vegan teens then began to recite, getting Sam ready. Both unaware of what difficulties will come tomorrow, not just for the goth girl, but her friends as well.
