I discovered that the book Chamber of Secrets doesn't look like the movie one. This one is based more on the book version. It is also by far the hardest chapter I've written yet. I finally had to just stop editing and post it or else I might never get on with the story. Enjoy!
Severus stumbled in breathing heavily while he clutched a bulging sack to his chest.
"I think I lost them." He panted leaning against the wall. Bad luck seemed to follow him wherever he went at Hogwarts.
"Lost who?" Lily started glancing at the door as if the Headmaster himself would walk through it. Severus didn't have a chance to answer before the door slammed open and three boys stormed into the bathroom.
"Snape! I didn't know peeping was-" James cut off looking between the three of them. "You're doing it today and you didn't bloody tell me!?" He yelled.
"Oh hush, Potter. Or you will get us all in trouble." Lily frowned. "We never said we'd let you come with us." A part of her was relieved though she made an effort not to show it. Six against one giant snake was much better odds than two. Even if she hated to admit it, the boys had shown skill and talent during the school year that even she had to acknowledge. Not that she'd ever mention it to James. His head was already much too big.
"But you included Snevelus?" James sneered. The boys had spent a good part of the day going through their stash of pranks to figure out which might be the most effective against such a monster. They had even brought a bag full to show the girls when they happened to see Severus enter a girls bathroom. If the timing had been even slightly off…James clenched his jaw. Lily had trusted a practical death eater over them.
"He also happened to run into us at the wrong time." Vivian spoke up as she struggled to hold the now fully mobile chicken. Sirius had his arms folded while glaring at her. He had thought Vivian had come to trust him or at the very least see him as a friend. Maybe it had been wishful thinking on his part. Friends didn't leave friends behind. Not when it truly mattered. It wasn't until the chicken managed to scratch her hand hard enough to draw blood that he released a sigh before walking over. He quickly grabbed it by its neck and not so gently stuffed it into an extra bag he'd brought. He'd make sure she'd get an earful at how utterly idiotic they'd both been after this whole ordeal was over.
"So what's the plan?" Sirius asked. Lily spoke first while running her hand through her hair. The plan they'd had was now thrown out the window, not that they'd had much of one.
"First, let's see what everyone brought. We can make a more detailed plan afterwards. Severus, what did you manage to bring?" Severus had managed to convince Professor Slughorn to lend to him with the excuse of doing a few experiments. It wasn't a lie. Whether any other these potions worked on a Basilisk would indeed be an experiment that not many would ever be able to attempt. He counted the potions with his hands as he listed them off.
"A few antidote potions, Bulgeye potion, calming draught, drowsiness draught, Erumpent Potion, and a healing potion."
"That's much more than I was expecting in the fifteen minutes you were gone." Lily said. At most she'd expected a few of the more basic potions they had gone over in class recently. Turning to James she gestured to their building bag, "What about you lot?" Between the potions and their pranks they might all just make it out alive.
"Fireworks, dungbombs, ones that make smoke, ones that make a bright light, and a few other odds and ends."
"The plan is to hide and use all of those as distractions long enough for the rooster to crow. It's the only way we know to kill it."
"That or the sword of Gryffindor. Can't exactly bring that though." Vivian said. She watched the rooster struggle in the bag. What if the Basilisk just swallowed it whole? It didn't seem likely the snake would slither away scared at the sight of such a small bird.
James held back a witty remark on their very vague plan forcing himself to let Lily take charge. Arguing now wouldn't do them any good. "Alrighty then. Where is this snake hiding anyways?" James asked. He stared dubiously at one of the open stalls. A rumor said the ministry of magic had a portal using toilets.
The group watched as Vivian walked up to the sink, closing her eyes as she placed her hand on the engraved snake. She swallowed, willing the dream to come to her. The boy spoke. She took a breath. She watched the scene again, but this time she did her best to speak alongside him. It wasn't right. The last hiss had been too short. She tried again. This time the first hiss was too long. Frustrated she was about to try once more when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Sirius whispered softly, "Take your time. You can do this." He was extremely curious how she knew, what he assumed to be, parseltounge. She took a few deep slow breaths and tried once more.
"Open up" Silence. She was a freak. A nut job. A certified wacko. Letting herself believe nightmares were real. How would she ever face them after-. Her train of thought was interrupted by a grinding sound. Then the ground shook as the sink sunk deep into the ground revealing a hole so dark and deep the bottom couldn't be seen.
The group stared at the hole for a few minutes in silence. The tension in the air was almost suffocating. Lily could have sworn she felt a snake coiling around her ankle.
"Remember. Don't look at its eye at all costs. Use what you have. Magic won't do anything against it." Lily said softly.
"Don't look at the giant snake we need to kill. Got it." Lupin muttered. How he'd gotten drug into this he wasn't sure. Though he didn't like the idea of the girls going in alone, he didn't see why they couldn't just tell the teachers. Sirius and James had laughed at that. With their reputation there was no one who would believe them. Lily and Vivian were different though. Professor McGongall clearly had a sweet spot for both girls. Vivian's adeptness for transfiguration and enthusiasm had not gone unnoticed by the teacher. "I still think we should've told someone."
"We can't. I need its fangs…." Vivian hesitated, finally looking away from the pit, "There's a greater evil coming and the Basilisk fangs are one of the few things to fight it." Lupin stared at her. Her hands tightly fisted. He realized then that she didn't want to do this anymore than he did. If she'd felt she had a choice she'd have told the teachers first.
"After a Basilisk I'm sure whatever evil it is will seem like a piece of cake after this."
"If only…" Vivian said. Voldemort was one of the strongest wizards if the papers were right. To take him down they were going to need a lot more than luck.
"On that cheery note. Last one gets to write everyone's next essay." Sirius said. He brazenly stepped off into the darkness. Everyone froze for a moment, listening. "Well are you coming or not?" His voice echoed slightly winding its way up the hole.
"I hate snakes." Vivian muttered. She jumped off. Her heart was in her throat pounding so loud she thought it might just explode. It was an odd feeling falling in darkness. She had a floating spell ready when she found she was already floating down. Sirius reached out a hand and guided her to the floor. She stumbled into him in the dark. Her whole body was shaking.
"Sorry," he whispered, "Thought it best to keep it dark until everyone's down. Don't need to be attracting unwanted attention this early."
The others came down quickly. First James, then Lily, Snape, and lastly Lupin. Vivian swallowed and started walking down the pipes. She followed behind the dream's vision of the boy until they came into a large room where a large statue of a snake stood. The same statue the snake had come out of in the dream. None of them had spoken, but as Vivian had stopped and with no snake insight James chanced a whisper.
"How do you know about all this anyways? From your parents?"
"Something like that."
James snorted. Lily elbowed him hard before motioning for him to be quiet. Only the sound of the chickens' clucks could be heard. "Just be ready" her eyes were staring straight at the statue's mouth. The ghostly boy had said something to open it…but surely the snake couldn't always be kept there. Lupin heard it. The soft slithering. Somewhere in the pipes across from where they'd come. He motioned to Sirius and James. They tensed and nodded while grabbing a few oddly shaped items. The group of them quickly hid as best they could hiding behind columns and other smaller statues. The Basilisk seemed to slither into the room lazily flicking its tongue as it took in the scent of its new prey. They had nowhere to run where it wouldn't find them.
The sound of dripping water was interrupted as Lupin threw a large object at the snake. It hit the nose before exploding. A wretched smell filled the air with a dark purple smoke. Dougbomb. Vivian gripped the column tightly to stop the shaking in her hands as she watched the snake glide into the water in an attempt to get rid of sticky substance left behind on its nose.
They were going to die. What would a handful of 11 year olds have against the King of Snakes. Reading about their size was nothing to seeing its body slide across the ground. Her eyes locked with Lily who was hidden a few columns down from her. Lily smiled. There was no way they would lose. Lily was sure of it. Another crash. Severus had left his hideout behind a column to land a potion on one of the snake's eyes. The eye began to swell to double it's size. The Basilisk hissed angrily as it striked out at him, missing him by only a few inches. Lily shot out a spell in an attempt to lure the snake away from Severus. The snake swerved to lash out at her now striking at anything that moved. Lily scrambled backwards trying to take cover behind another column. James quickly threw multiple objects at the snake. Fireworks and smoke filled the air with a deafening shriek. The smoke gave Lily enough cover to run to where Vivian had been hiding. The snake seemed to disappear in the smoke and quiet filled the room once again. Vivian caught sight of Sirius who now held on tight to the rooster as he climbed up the side of the statue. Vivian turned to Lily to see what she'd make of Sirius, however Lily was staring in horror, her mouth opened in a silent cry. James was frozen, kneeling in a puddle with the Basilisk above him.
"Petrified," Vivian whispered, "He's just petrified. He's not dead Lily." Not yet anyways. Lily started forward as if to run to him when Vivian held her back. She nodded to both Lupin and Severus. Motioning for Lupin to grab James on the count of 3. "Get ready Lily. Let's give it everything we've got. One. Two. Three." A multitude of explosions hit the snake causing it to mash into the nearest column. Lupin was already running, sliding through the water to kneel next to James. He had already picked him up and almost made it to cover when the snake slithered around him. Its slimy scales brushed up against his back. He lowered James to the ground and gripped the last trick he had and prepared to throw it into the snake's mouth. Lupin was careful to keep his gaze lowered to the very top of its neck. He could feel it tense as it went to strike. It's mouth opened just as a furious cry filled the air. Lily was barely aware she was moving as she ran towards the snake. She watched as another explosion from Sirius hit its bad eye. The snake didn't falter, it had its prey. Something heavy bounced against her thigh as she ran. Her eyes didn't leave the snake as she reached over to her hip and felt cold metal. The snake struck out as she pulled out the sword of Gryffindor and plunged it into the snake's mouth. It jerked back shrieking with the sword stuck into its lower jaw making it unable to close its mouth. A quick movement of its black tail has Lupin and Lily flying into the water.
Severus jumped out from behind a pile of debris. Taking the strap of his bag he gave it one good swing before releasing it towards the snake's open mouth. The bag hit the sword releasing its contents. The Basilisk twisted and rolled on the floor in pain. Severus and Vivian wasted no time jumping into the freezing water to help pull Lupin and Lily to safety. Sirius had already grabbed James by a leg and was awkwardly dragging him for cover as the rooster squirmed in his other arm. Vivian panted heavily drenched and freezing as she surveyed her friends. The snake had already recovered and was starting to coil. The sword's hilt glistened in its mouth. She glanced back at her friends who were now bruised and bloodied. She had gotten them into this mess and she was going to bloody see them out of it. Mustering up what little energy she had left she ran towards the snake making sure to stay on the side that still had sight. It hissed angrily zeroing in on her. Vivian could hear her friends yelling, but didn't have time to make out their words before she was thrown back into the wall. Her breath was forced out leaving her gasping. The snake's injured eye caused it to slightly miss it's mark. Hitting her with its nose rather than its mouth. Vivian quickly grabbed the hilt and yanked on it with her remaining strength. The snake yanked back as blood and potions dripped from it's crooked jaw. It coils back once more as Vivian struggles to raise the sword. She risked a glance over to her friends. Lily, Sirius, Severus, and Lupin were all running towards her with rocks and whatever odd bits they could find. The rooster was forgotten on a pile of debris.
The snake launched itself towards her in a rather sluggish attack, just as the sound of a rooster filled the room. Vivian took her chance and drove to the left just as the snake rammed into the wall. Silence filled the room once more as they all stared at the unmoving creature.
