HIDDEN EMOTIONS

The room was white and nearly silent. Only the beep of the monitor came in the lengths of Derek's heartbeat.

The call had come in near 10:30 PM. Gorge was the one to answer. It was the first time Casey had seen a grown man cry.

The whole family had rushed to the hospital. Marti didn't fully understand that Derek was in a coma. That was frustrating to Casey. She was supposed to be smart but how could she explain that Derek could die?

When they entered the ER an officer met them. He told them that the other driver was in jail and being held on charges of drinking while intoxicated.

Now, in the room, they don't talk.

The door opened to reveal a nurse, "Sorry, I'm just checking up." The nurse wrote down the data she collected. Pausing before she walked through the door and into the hall she said, "It wouldn't hurt if you talked to him. Let him know you're here. That you love him."

Gorge, Edwin, and Marti dominated the conversation, but no one complained since they had known Derek the longest.

"I'm sorry for letting Casey take your White Stripe tickets," Lizzie had said at one point.

"Visitors hour is over," a voice came over the PA system.

Gorge looked down at his hands then at Nora, "Someone should stay. You know in case he wakes up."

"I'll stay," Casey said. "Well, Gorge, you should be with Edwin and Marti, and Mom you should also help comfort them."

Gorge nodded, "See you in the morning, Casey."

"Bye, sweetie," Nora told her oldest daughter.

Once alone Casey pulled up a chair. She didn't know what to do so she held his hand.

"Hi, Derek. Listen because I'm only going to say this once. You are a pain in my side, but you're my stepbrother so that means something. That means that I care if you die. I mean if you die who am I going to fight with?"

Derek just lay there. Sighing Casey just looked at him. He looked so innocent even though tubes where running all over him.

Casey remembered the time when they were home alone because Lizzie and Edwin had gone to friends houses for a sleepover, their parents were going out for dinner and a movie and Marti was visiting her grandmother. They had been bored. Derek wanted to throw a party, again, but they had promised their parents that they wouldn't.

Bored enough to play a game together Derek pulled out twister. Thirty minutes into the game and the two teens were tangled.

On one of Derek's spins he finally fell on top of Casey.

"Get off of me," she had said.

Derek's response was flipping over so their chests were pressing against each other's. "Make me," he whispered in her ear. Before Casey could move he kissed her cheek and stood. "Let's play cards," he suggested and went to get the deck.

That memory made her cry. "Why did you do that," she whispered. "Why do you do those type of things? You act all nice and then you turn. You flirt then turn. Why can't you see that I…I love you."

Casey wiped a tear. He could die. She was so consumed by that one though that she almost missed Derek's hand squeeze her own.

Her eyes flew to his as they opened. She smiled knowing that what ever happened next, weather he had heard or not, weather he felt the same or not, he was alive. He wasn't going to die in the comma. If things grew between them they would deal with it, but until then he was awake and in the clear of death.
