He sat up in his bed breathing hard and grimacing in pain. Looking around the semi-dark room, he choked back a sob. A figure approached his bed and gently pushed him back against his pillow.

"She left me, didn't she?" he cried as a new pain washed over him. It was a pain compounded with the loss of his mother. The figure at his bed swallowed hard and pushed back his own pain.

"I'm sorry, John, but Samantha got hit by the same tree that hit your mom," his dad said as the tears coursed down his face. "Neither of them survived."

"SAMANTHA, YOU PROMISED!" John cried out. "You promised me that you'd never leave me. I can't live without her, Dad. She was my best friend and sister and now she's left me." Jeff tried to hold his son only to be pushed away.

"I hate her for leaving me," he cried. "How could she just leave me alone?"

"You're not alone, John, we're here for you," answered his dad softly. John closed his eyes and shut his dad out. He couldn't cope right now and he knew he was alone for the first time in twelve years. He fell into a restless sleep and was plagued by nightmares. In all of them he watched Sam and their mother trapped under the tree as their last breath faded from their bodies.

John opened his eyes and noticed at the foot of his bed an ethereal glow around two female figures. He recognized them immediately as his sister and mother. They smiled at him sadly.

"Johnny, I didn't want to break my promise but I couldn't move fast enough," said Sam's voice. "I will always be with you. You can get through this let our brothers and Dad help you. They're hurting, too, and they're afraid of losing you. Don't give up, we'll never leave you." Sam was suddenly standing next to John. He looked up at his twin sister with tears in his eyes. She leaned down to kiss him softly on the lips.

"I'm always right here," she said as she placed her hand on his chest, directly over his heart. "Live and love, my bestest brother." Sam and Lucy slowly faded in the darkness.

"I'll never stop missing you, my bestest sister," he whispered softly.
