Crookshanks peeked around a corner of the pet shop. Agirl walked into the shop, followed by two boys. One of the boys walked up to the counter. he seemed to be talking to julie, the manager. The girl walked around for a while. she seemed to be browsing for pets, but crokshanks didn't pay much attention to them. what drew her attention was the rat the first boy was holding. The rat was missing a toe. Crookshanks jumped down from the shelf she had been sitting on and snapped at the rat. The boy snatched the rat away, and julie caught crookshanks before she could pounce again. The two boys left quickly, but the girl was still there. Crookshanks wanted to see that rat again and she knew only one way. Crookshanks put on her most pathetic look, and acted as sweet as she could. Julie told the girl about how nobody ever wanted to buy crookshanks, and soon the cat was being carried out the door.
