Rey unscrewed the side panel of the ship to peer inside its engine, hoping for once that the issue ailing the aircraft was easy to fix. Usually, she relished the idea of tinkering away at a problem – the rush of joy when she discovered the correct answer was well worth the time spent fixing it. But today, she didn't know if she even had the mental space for much more than a simple change of parts.
'He's just so infuriating,' she said, glancing over at Rose, who was already inspecting her own craft. 'It's like he doesn't even listen to me sometimes.'
Rose shrugged. 'It sounds like neither of you are listening to each other at the moment.'
Rey scoffed and gestured wildly with her screwdriver. 'Trust me, I'm listening. I can't help it if he's talking nonsense.'
'Mm.' Rose didn't say anything else, but she didn't have to. Even that short syllable spoke volumes.
Frustration shot through Rey. Rose was supposed to be on her side here. 'You disagree?' she asked in a voice like flint.
'I'm not there for your arguments, so I don't know who's talking what,' she said reasonably. 'But you love him, don't you?'
'Of course.' Rey sighed with relief at the sight of a frayed wire in the engine. As scary as it was to know the Resistance had been flying around in a potential fire hazard, at least it was an easy fix. Moving away from the craft, she searched through their supplies for a new cord.
'And he loves you.'
'Yeah.' Even in their worst arguments, she never doubted that.
'So what's more important? Your relationship or how to store apples?'
Her hands faltered just above the cord she needed. 'That's not a fair question.'
'Isn't it?' Rose asked. 'Relationships are about compromise. Finn and I get on one another's nerves all the time, but we care about one another more than we care about all the little things. If apple storage is so important to you both, then fine, argue away. But if you care about him more than you care about room-temperature fruit, and if he cares about you more than he cares about cold fruit…'
'Then we both need to find a way to get over this.' Rey breathed out slowly. Perhaps Rose was right. As much as Rey hated the concept of ice-cold apples, the disagreement wasn't worth the reward. They could keep some apples in the conservator and some on the benchtop for all she cared. 'I hate it when you're right.'
Rose re-secured the side panel of her ship and grinned over at Rey triumphantly. 'I know.'
