As Rey and Finn knock out the last of the stormtroopers, leaving the way to the First Order outpost clear, Poe raises his hand in the signal to regroup. From the intel they were given, they were only met with half the enemy's force. He's hoping the other soldiers are off on a mission somewhere, but it's just as likely that they're assembling around the corner, ready to ambush the Resistance as they pass through.
It pains him to even think it, but they can't rush into this unprepared. The other Resistance fighters all gather around him, and when Finn spots his signal, he gestures for Rey to follow him over. But she just stares unresponsively into the distance as if she hears something nobody else can.
He knows what she's going to do before she moves a single muscle. His stomach falling – not this again – Poe races towards her as quietly as he can, jumping around fallen bodies and wayward guns. 'Rey,' he hisses. 'Wait.'
In a sudden blur of motion, she's running. He's fast, but she's agile, darting through the battlefield with grace and ease.
Poe sighs as he slows to a stop beside Finn. Dammit. We're supposed to be a team. How can I give out instructions when Rey doesn't even hang around long enough to hear them?
For the first time, his gut twists with guilt. She's just like him when he started out: full of potential and promise yet wilfully blind to the big picture. How many times did he ignore Leia and Holdo's orders because he thought he knew better? How many times did his actions win them the battle but lose something more valuable in the process? It's been a hard habit to unlearn, and the only reason he's made the progress he has is out of necessity. Now Leia has left Poe and Finn in charge, Poe has to think about the big picture; otherwise, people will die.
Hopefully it won't take Poe and Finn dying for Rey to come to the same realisation.
'We can't let her go in alone,' Finn points out.
'No.' Poe cocks his gun. 'Let's hope this isn't a trap.'
