Breathing heavily, Rey ducked behind a boulder mere moments before a laser blasted into the tree she'd been standing in front of. The trunk creaked as burnt leaves and charred bark flaked down, and she choked on the acrid stench.
'There are too many stormtroopers that way,' she said when she could breathe again. 'We won't be able to get through.'
Poe crouched down and sprinted across the battlefield to join her. 'That way, too.'
Herded into a corner, surrounded on all sides and cut off from the rest of the Resistance, they didn't have much choice. They couldn't just stay here and wait for the enemy to close in. 'We're going to have to risk it.'
He sighed and reached his blaster around the other side of the boulder to fire off a few shots. Whether it was to buy them a few more minutes or out of a genuine attempt to clear a path, Rey wasn't sure. 'I know. But if this is it for us, we'll go down swinging, yeah?'
Rey touched his shoulder, and he turned to look at her, his dark eyes troubled. 'There's still a chance.'
They'd faced poor odds before and come out the other side. If they went into the fray assuming they'd lose, then the outcome was a foregone conclusion.
Poe raised his blaster. 'Then let's do this.'
