The fire crackled in the hearth as Poe read through the checklist Rose had given him when she realised just how little wedding planning he and Rey had done. The woman was a lifesaver in more ways than one, and if they ever got this event off the ground, he was sure she'd be the one to thank.

'What kind of venue do you like?' he asked.

Rey shrugged as she warmed her feet by the fire. Her copy of the checklist was discarded face-down on the rug beside her. 'Whatever you prefer.'

He frowned. Over the past few months, he'd been taken aback by how little Rey cared about the details of their wedding and marriage. He knew she loved him and wanted a life with him, so why was she so cavalier about what that would look like? 'Surely you have a preference.'

'Why would I?' she asked, sounding genuinely befuddled. 'I'm not marrying a place; I'm marrying you.'

'Aren't there any traditions that you want to include? From the weddings I went to as a kid, there are things that I wouldn't feel right about not including. What did you – ' He froze as realisation swept over him. 'Did you go to any weddings as a child?'

'No.' She twisted her hands in her lap. 'When people married, they didn't have the credits to throw a celebration. They signed a register, and the better-off couples held a nice dinner for their immediate family, and that was it.'

'Oh.' Yavin-4's wedding traditions were very simple compared to most of the galaxy, but he'd never considered how even that might seem opulent her given what she was used to.

The effects of Rey's upbringing weren't new to him. Every now and again, they stumbled across a conflict shaped by their different childhoods and had to stop to tear down their unspoken assumptions before continuing. He'd just never expected to encounter that here.

'Do you want to scale it back? I wouldn't feel right getting married without my dad there, and Finn and Rose would be devastated if we didn't include them, but it could just be the five of us if you want.'

'Following your traditions is important to you, and I don't want you to feel like you've missed out,' she said. 'I don't mind having the kind of wedding you would have on your home planet. I just… As long as it's not wasteful, I don't really have any opinions about what it should be like.'

Of course. How could she give opinions on wedding venues when anything other than a home-cooked meal felt highbrow to her? 'What if we hold it at my father's house? It's beautiful there, and there are lots of different clearings in the forest, so it would work regardless of how many or few people we invite.'

A faint smile twitched at her lips. 'It would be nice to get married surrounded by nature.'

'I'll put together a list of the traditions that matter to me, then we can go through it tomorrow to see which ones you're comfortable with. We can work out the other details after that.'

As much as he'd like a traditional Yavin-4 wedding, she had a point. There were things he cared about incorporating, but none of them were as important as who he was marrying.

Somehow, they'd find a middle ground between his customs and hers, just like they always did.
