The Place I Once Knew

Hello! My first attempt at a HTTYD story.

I've recently rewatched the films and fell in love again, and my love inspired me to write a time travel fic because I just wish this happened!

This story will not be abandoned I promise, but updates will be irregular because I'm working on my other stories at the same time.

Hope you like it!

Chapter 1

Hiccup felt the pain spread over his entire body as he fell on the hard ground.

One of the Skrills got him as he jumped off Toothless to fly alone over to Astrid, who was struggling with Stormfly as they got too close to the tornado.

Why were they currently struggling against a tornado you might ask?

Well…

A few weeks ago, dear Dagur came to Berk for a visit. He did not come empty handed though. He brought many strange rumours of Drago Bludvist, who was seen alive and most recently was spotted near the Melody Island.

Apparently, Drago was looking for the Time Gliders. Very rare and never really seen before dragons that can travel through time.

Yes, against all the scepticism from the older generation and initial underestimation of the threat, it turned out that the Time Gliders were in fact very real.

And, Drago found them.

"This is my fault." Hiccup breathed out overwhelmed with the problem he flew right in.

If only he wasn't so busy with being the Chief of Berk, with all the dragons, increasing lack of space, and a tone of ridiculous requests from Vikings, the training academy, his new inventions, keeping peace with the other islands and so on.

If only he acted sooner, if he didn't put it off. Maybe the situation wouldn't be as bad as it was right now.

Because right now, Drago trapped the Time Gliders and was using them to open up a portal inside a tornado made by other captured dragons he managed to come by since his not-so-fatal after all end at Hiccup's hands, just a few months ago.

As soon as it opened, Drago didn't hesitate to fly right into the time tornado, and Hiccup was forced to land on the closest rock and take a 7 second break to think stategy. Drago's ominous plans to kill him aside, what now worried Hiccup the most was that Astrid, along with Stormfly got pushed into the tornado right after Drago and Hiccup couldn't go after them immediately because his dragon was separated from him.

Odin's left eye meaty yak's backside Tuffnut's smelly fish!

He had to get to Toothless and go after them!

But where was Toothless?

"Toothless!" He shouted as he got up off the ground. Just as fast, he saw his dragon dive down towards him, flying away from the Skrills in the skies. Hiccup jumped on as Toothless flew by, and they rushed towards the time tornado as fast as they could.

Faster! Faster!

Nearly there!

So close!

But it was too late.

The tornado portal has closed.

Drago succeeded. And Astrid was gone.

"Aaaaaah!" Astrid was spat out by the time tornado. With Stormfly, following closely behind her. Both were too dizzy from all the spinning, to save themselves from landing in the water.

"Stormfly!" Astrid exclaimed as the dragon grabbed her and with the rests of her strength, she brought Astrid to the shore of the Melody Island.

The exact same Melody Island they disappeared from, except Hiccup wasn't here.

At least not hers, dragon riding, grown up, Chief of Berk, Hiccup.

Because if Drago was successful, which it appeared he was. Astrid was now in the past.

The question was, how far into the past did they go?

She watched Drago fly away from them, in the direction of Berk. Astrid looked back at her dragon and felt dread rise in her stomach. Stormfly would need to get some rest first, half an hour at least, before she was able to fly such a long distance.

Which meant Drago would get there quicker, which then followed… Hiccup was in danger.

At least, if this was past then Stoic was still alive and he would know how to deal with Drago, right?

Suddenly she remembered how several months ago, Stoic reacted the minute he heard 'Drago Bludvist' leave Hiccup's mouth.

Instant lockdown of the entire island.

Astrid sighted. Full lockdown wouldn't be enough even if they had time to implement it, which they wouldn't have because they had no idea Drago was heading towards them. They will never expect it and Hiccup most likely will not be able to protect himself.

She had to get to Berk, and fast.

Hopefully, her and Stormfly together could fly faster than Drago and the handful of dragons at his command. Their numbers decidedly outweighed their team of two, but she had to do something!

Astrid heard some growling. She turned to see a pair of Deadly Nadders approach Stormfy. They looked like they wanted to play. Further away there was a group of Singetails.

An idea struck her.

"Well, looks like we found our back up." Astrid smiled and went to catch some fish.

On Berk, the sun was slowly descending and the Vikings were just finishing with fixing up the houses and repairing the village after the last Dragon Raid few days ago.

The raids were becoming more frequent, hence why Stoic was on his way back from the Great Hall.

Again.

He had called a meeting with the Tribe Council, the 12 most experienced warriors of the tribe to look over the maps and discuss another go at finding the dragon lair.

Stoic sighted in frustration as another gathering of great minds ended with no solid plan on how to tackle their dragon problem. Deep in thought, his feet led him to the edge of the island. He looked over the decks and the boats, that appeared very small from such height.

The village seemed to enjoy another quiet day, and those because rare in the last few months. The vast sea was calm and ready for the night to finally come, and the sun to disappear beyond the horizon.

But Stoic was not.

They lost another day to no result. All this planning and nothing came of it. Soon enough it would be time to start preparing for the winter, but with all the raids all food supplies that was meant to be stored and saved for the colder months, was either stolen or destroyed. If it carried on, the tribe would starve…

"The meeting didn't go well, did it?" Stoic turned to see Gobber coming from behind him and stand next to him. The blacksmith didn't attend the meeting as he was busy with mending and patching up the village. His skill was truly irreplaceable.

"Don't you worry my friend; the problem will solve itself." He said, running his hook through his moustache.

"It must. If it doesn't, there is a tough winter ahead of us." Stoic told Gobber. "I see you've been more successful than I was today." He added turning back to look at the village.

"Yeah, it went quite fast, we finished earlier than I expected. Hiccup helped a lot. Boy's got a talent for making things, I tell ya." Gobber chuckled in approval of Stoic's 15-year-old son, stroking his moustache.

"Good, that's good. Odin knows, half of the damage to the village was caused due to his dragon killer spirit rushing to come out at the least opportune moments." Stoic sighted loudly.

Hiccup was getting out of hand.

During the last raid, he tripped and pushed a wooden trolley with weapons right into the fire. He then ran after it, only to be cornered by a dragon. Running away from it, Hiccup led it towards the nets, which the dragon destroyed in effect releasing half of the dragons that were caught. And that was only the beginning, because Hiccup was trying to protect himself with one of his newest inventions.

And it worked. Hiccup managed to shoot it at the dragon. What went wrong was that the thing that shot out, caught fire and crashed into a building. The dragon chased after it, destroying everything in its path.

"Give him a break. He just wants to help and he's trying too, in his own way."

"Oh, what am I going to do with him, Gobber?" Stoic ran his hand down his tired face.

"Put him in training with the others. They'll be staring in a couple of weeks."

"No, I'm serious."

"So am I" Gobber insisted.

"He'll be killed before you let the first dragon out of its cage." Stoic folded his arms.

"Oh you don't know that."

"Yes I do."

"No you don't"

"Yeah, actually I do. You know what he's like. He doesn't listen, he has the attention span of a sparrow. Always doodling away, in that little sketchbook of his." The chief looked away towards the sea, with a defeated scowl, that soon turned into a battle-ready glare as he noticed something on the horizon.

"You can't stop him, Stoic. You can only prepare him. I know it seems hopeless, but you won't always be around to protect him."

"Gobber, look!" Chief pointed at the shapes in the distance. They were too big to be birds, and were getting closer and closer at a steady pace. With them, the sky was getting darker and darker…

Dragons…
