Chapter Six

The next afternoon after she got off the phone, Jasmine said, "Marshall will be out of pocket for the next several days. He has a new homicide to investigate. The first two days after a murder are always terribly busy for him. He is trying to track down clues and discover who the perp is."

Scarlett said, "Perp?"

"Perpetrator, bad guy."

"That must be hard on you with your husband gone so much."

"Yes, it is but Marshall really loves his work. He has always enjoyed solving mysteries."

"How long have you been married?"

"Almost three years. We dated for two years then we got married."

"Has he been a cop the entire time?"

"He had just been promoted to being a detective when we met. His first assignment was property crimes then he was assigned to robbery, but he really didn't like that. He asked for another assignment. He was given a choice between homicides or assaults. He chose homicides. He has been promoted twice since he became a detective. He is now a lieutenant."

"How wonderful."

"I certainly never thought I would ever marry a cop but once I met Marshall, I knew he was the one for me. It is hard on him because there are so many young people that are hostile towards the police. They say cruel and hateful things to him. We try not to tell strangers what he does for a living because of all of that.

"That is certainly a significant difference between now and then. I can't imagine anyone talking to a law officer like that in our time."

"True. There are a lot of young people who are rebelling against what they call 'The Establishment.' It basically means the people in control of the government. They are even rebelling against their parents and the way their parents live their lives. In a way, Rhett, it is like what you did when you refused to marry the girl in the buggy incident. You rebelled against the status quo."

Rhett smiled and said, "They don't agree with the rules of proper society, and they are not going to live by them."

"Yes, a lot of them have been disowned by their parents also."

"This is interesting."

"The protest started over young men not wanting to go serve in Vietnam."

"Vietnam?"

"Didn't we see people protesting the Vietnam war?

"Yes, we did."

"Why?"

"Just so you know I am giving you the Reader's Digest version of things. The United States is fighting in Vietnam to stop the spread of Communism. A lot of young people don't think it is worth dying over."

"I can agree with that. I didn't think fighting for the South was worth dying over until I stupidly did."

"You couldn't have realized that was a stupid idea before you abandon me at Rough and Ready?"

Rhett grinned at his wife and said, "Unfortunately, no. I had faith you would make it to Tara."

"Despite the fact you were leaving me in a war zone with a rickety wagon, a nag, a sick woman, a child, a new-born baby and a nincompoop. A war zone where two armies were still fighting."

Rhett flashed her another grin and said, "You made it to Tara, so my faith was justified," Scarlett glared at him. He said, "What is a Reader's Digest?"

"A magazine that publishes stories that have been condensed to make them easier to read."

"You could try to read that Scarlett. You might actually become a reader."

Scarlett glared at him again and said, So, you and Marshall are part of the establishment because he is a policeman?"

Jasmine flashed them a smile and said, "Not just that but we also adhere to the old values."

"Like Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes."

Scarlett looked at Rhett looking for the mockery but there was none. She said, "Like what values?"

"Like fidelity and wanting to have a family."

Rhett said, "I guess we do too."

Scarlett smiled at Rhett and said, "When do you think, you are going to start your family?"

"After I get my PhD and have worked for a couple of years."

"We need to have that conversation on ways to prevent pregnancies."

"Yes, we do."

"Enough of me explaining things. With Marshall being busy, we will go out and get Cajun food for dinner. It is something I want y'all to try."

"Does Marshall not like it?"

"No, it is too spicy for him. It might be too spicy for you, but we will see. I will guide you in your choices."

Both Scarlett and Rhett did like Cajun food. They had let Jasmine order for them. Jasmine had told them that her meal was quite spicy and gave both of them a taste. Rhett liked the spicy flavor, but Scarlett didn't which in a way made sense to Jasmine.

Jasmine, Scarlett, and Rhett had a conversation about contraceptives. It was very embarrassing to Scarlett, but she wanted to know what was available in this new world if she and Rhett were trapped here so she persevered. There were several methods: condoms, the withdrawal method, the rhythm method, the birth control pill, a diaphragm, an IUD, and a nursing mother. Jasmine explained them all. Jasmine said, "There are also permanent methods of contraception. They are a vasectomy for a man and a tubal ligation for a woman. The man's procedure is simple enough it can be done in the doctor's office while the woman's requires hospitalization."

Scarlett asked, "How is that done for a man?"

Rhett stared at Scarlett and smiled. He said, "Why am I going to have the surgery?"

"Because you enjoy relations so much more than me."

Jasmine laughed and explained the procedure.

Afterwards Rhett and Scarlett went for a walk to be alone. As they were walking Rhett said, "Nobody is taking a scalpel to me."

"Alright."

"Condoms are called sheaths in our time, but I won't wear one with you. They are too uncomfortable. I have worn them with the whores, so I don't get any diseases."

"That makes me feel better. That I won't catch anything from you."

Rhett smiled. Finally, he said, "We could try the rhythm method. I had heard it didn't work very well but now I know why. The time the couple was restraining was not the time they should have been restraining themselves. Although I don't know if I could go that long without having relations with you."

"Maybe we could work a combination of two of the methods. The rhythm method and the withdrawal method."

"I like that idea."

"Why did we not talk about this in our timeline?"

"I guess because I am a selfish, self-centered bastard and didn't want to be inconvenienced by practicing any type of pregnancy prevention."

"Rhett! Despite the fact I told you I didn't want any more children."

Rhett smiled and said, "Yes, despite the fact you told me you didn't want to have any more children," Scarlett stared at him for a long time. He finally said, "What's more I do want to have a child. I have always wanted to have children and now that I have forgone my bachelorhood I might as well have it all. I would like to have twenty, but I will settle for one," As Scarlett continued staring at Rhett he added, "You know I am a selfish, self-centered bastard. Why are you so surprised?"

Scarlett didn't answer the question for a long while. At last, she said, "I guess because nobody has ever completely disregarded my wishes or desires before. Rhett you can't just do what you want anymore. You have to think about what I want also."

"As do you."

Scarlett sighed and said, "Wouldn't it be great if I could get the birth control pill?"

"Or even that diaphragm thing but not the IUD. That didn't sound safe to me."

"Me either. I like the idea of just taking a pill then I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore."

"I guess if we are here forever you can."

"Rhett, we have to get back. I can't leave Wade and Ella behind."

"I just don't know how. I don't know how we got here so I don't know how to get us back."

"I know you will get us back."

Rhett was amazed at her utter confidence in him. As he thought about it, she had always had so much faith in him and his opinion.

That night Jasmine made hamburgers and French fries for dinner. Jasmine had hers with cheese and both of her dinner guest like cheese on their burgers also. Marshall was able to join them for the meal but as soon as he finished eating, he was out the door. Both Scarlett and Rhett liked the meal. The truth was that so far, they had not disliked any of the food they had been served.

A few days later after their conversation about contraceptives, Jasmine gave Scarlett a book titled 'Everything you wanted to know about Sex.' Scarlett blushed but told Jasmine, "Thank you very much."

Jasmine blushed and said, "My friend bought me a copy a year ago. I thought I knew everything there was to know but I found out I didn't. Since you know practically nothing, it is a terrific book for you."

"Yes, it is."

"Dear, if there is something in the book you don't understand just ask me."

"Alright."

A few days later while Scarlett and Jasmine where in the kitchen, Scarlett quietly said, "There is a bunch of icky stuff in that book."

"Like what?"

"Never mind."

"Dear, break through that wall of inhibition and ask me. No, I will just tell you. I enjoy myself very much in my marital bed. I usually have multiple orgasms," When Jasmine saw Scarlett's confused face, she said, "It is an incredibly wonderful feeling. It is what men feel at the very end."

"It is their satisfaction."

"Yes, and ours too but while a man only gets one per sexual session, we can have many each time. Try the things in the book. Nobody but you and Rhett know what you are doing in your marital bed. Just so you know, Marshall and I have done most of the stuff in that book. We have never had anyone else in our bed, neither one of us has had same sex relations, and we have never done anal sex. That's just gross."

Although Scarlett was beet red, she said, "Anal?"

"Your bottom."

"My bottom?!" Scarlett stared at Jasmine while she thought about that. When she realized how that worked she said, "No, it sounds painful. I have had enough pain in my marital bed to last me a lifetime."

Both ladies laughed.

Scarlett said, "Same sex?"

"Dear there are people who would rather sexually be with someone of their own gender than the opposite gender."

"No, I just don't believe you. You are teasing me."

"No, I'm not. Go ask Rhett about it."

That night when they had retired to their bedroom, Scarlett did ask Rhett about it and he said, "Yes, there are people who prefer their own gender."

Scarlett didn't speak. She just stared at Rhett then she got up and went to brush her teeth. That didn't make any sense to Scarlett, so she wasn't going to think about it anymore.

The Wilsons told the Butlers about the advancements in medicine. About penicillin and vaccines. About improvements in sanitation which prevented a lot of epidemics. About electricity and air conditioning. Marshall and Jasmine were trying to tell them of the greatest inventions in the last years.

Within a week they got their IDs. They were driver's licenses. Marshall and Rhett went out one afternoon for Rhett to learn how to drive.

While Rhett and Marshall were out of the house and away from the women, Marshall said, "I know a lot about your history also."

"Do you know how our lives end?"

"Yes, but at this point we don't want to tell you in case you go back to eighteen sixty-eight."

"Damn it! Tell me."

"No, but I am going to recommend you go see a doctor and get blood tests done to test you for syphilis and gonorrhea. You know what those are right?"

"They are diseases one can get from being intimate with a harlot."

"You can get them from anyone."

"I don't have either of those diseases, but I will get tested just to be sure."

"You need to get Scarlett tested also."

"Marshall, don't talked that way about my wife."

"I know that Scarlett has only had relations with someone she was married to but are you positive that one of her first two husbands didn't infect her."

Rhett looked away and said, "No."

"Remember me telling you about penicillin?"

"Yes."

"Penicillin will rid your body of the disease."

"Alright. Ask Jasmine to set it up."

"I will."

"You really aren't going to tell me my past future."

"Not yet."

"Then if you aren't going to tell me about my future, then let's start the driving lessons."

That afternoon stretched Marshall's patience to the nth degree. First, they had an argument about the need to wear a seat belt. Marshall explained everything about the car. Just like a teenager on his first driving trip Rhett kept saying, "I got it. Let's go." Rhett slammed on the brakes every time he stopped the car. He went from a snail's pace to speeding down the road. Marshall didn't think Rhett was ever going to actually get on the expressway. Then when Rhett did get on the expressway Marshall had to keep telling him to go faster. When they exited the freeway, they were going so fast Marshall thought they were going to flip the car. Yet by the time it was five o'clock Marshall thought Rhett had the basics down. All he needed to do now was practice.

Author's Notes: Everything you wanted to know about Sex but where afraid to ask by David Rubens, MD was actually published in 1969 but for my fanfic I am going to cheat and make the book have been published in 1967. The book by Dr. Rubens was one of the first mainstream self-help sex books. It had a clinical format to it. The Joy of Sex which was published in 1972 was much more user friendly. It even had drawings in it.
