Chapter 2: Golden Witch, Charmer and Valkyrie
Piper had graduated college. She'd followed her girlfriend to New Orleans for it, but... They'd moved too fast too early, moving in together. At first, for a couple months, it had been like they were both in their honeymoon phase. The longer it went on, the more it felt like they had moved on to being roommates with benefits though. With their taxing college classes and work, they made less and less time for dates. It hadn't been anything drastic like a fight or something, they had just naturally drifted apart over time, romantically speaking.
"I'm gonna move back to Los Angeles," Piper said, softly.
The two were sitting in the living room together, on the floor. Hazel cross-legged, with Piper behind her braiding her hair. Hazel hummed, acknowledging that she had heard Piper.
"So that's it then?" asked Hazel after a moment. "I mean..."
"Yeah. I guess so," agreed Piper, pausing for just a moment. "That... okay?"
Hazel shrugged. "I don't think I'll stay here either, to be honest. I wanted... I didn't want to forget my roots. Living here reminded me of my parents, hearing the stories about them from the neighbors... But I can't stay living in the past. This was formative for me, but my future does not lay in the past. It's time I move on and find... my own thing. Whatever that is."
"You know where that's gonna take you? Or, where you want to try it?"
"Nope," admitted Hazel. "I just... Maybe I'll travel for a bit? I'm fortunate enough that my parents have money and are willing to back me and I think it'd be stupid not to take a bit advantage of it."
"Well... Wherever it takes you... I hope you find the right thing."
Hazel leaned back and turned enough to kiss Piper's cheek. "No hard feelings, right? You're... my best friend at this point. I just don't..."
"No, I agree," Piper interrupted her with a smile. "We were good but not... It's okay. Not everyone can come out of high school with the love of their life, I guess."
"Eh, I'm fine with that," Hazel grinned broadly. "I came out of it with a best friend."

"Thanks for letting me crash for a bit. I didn't want to move in with mom and dad again..."
"Would feel like a step-back," offered Jason amused. "It's okay. We got the room."
Which was true, because of course had Zeus gotten them a place huge enough that it had a guest room for family visiting. The other week, the Jacksons had been staying over. Which had been great and it was cute to see Percy so excited to have his parents and Tyson over.
"I really missed you," Jason hugged Piper. "It'll be great to have you live with us."
"And... things between you and my sister are really over?"
Piper turned to look at Nico. "Yeah, I mean, too much distance. It's okay though. We've been drifting apart for a while. It's going to be fine, we'll still be friends."
That made Nico frown. Was that it? The reason she'd been visiting occasionally? How distracted she seemed? The thing she wanted to tell him but hadn't been able to yet? While Jason went to show Piper the guest room, Nico decided that it was time to track down his own sister.
His control of his powers had gotten even better in recent years. Not only could he control the dead, he could also sense the living. If he knew someone well enough, was familiar with their soul, heartbeat, their shadow, he could track them down everywhere. Concentrating on Hazel, he found her and connected with the shadows to walk through them.
"Brother!" Hazel sounded surprised. "What are you doing here?"
Nico tilted his head and looked around. "Where... exactly is 'here'?"
"Las Vegas," replied Hazel with a grin.
"Las what now?"
"Vegas," Hazel laughed softly. "I've been traveling around with Arion, visiting former classmates..."
She led the way over to a seating arrangement that faced the windows. Sitting down, Nico found himself overwhelmed by the view. Las Vegas. He'd... He'd always meant to visit, seen the sparkly lights on TV and thought he'd come here at one point, but so far, it hadn't happened.
"I noticed," Nico commented, eyes still on the lights of the city. "And... you chose to be here?"
"Do you... even know what's here?" asked Hazel in a curious voice. "And that's without judgment."
That made Nico blink in confusion. "Huh...?"
"Lou Ellen and her brother are living in Vegas, they have a show together."
Lou Ellen. Huh. Nico felt bad for not really having thought about her much in months. They used to be so close – Nico, Lou Ellen, Cecil, Will, Frank – before high school and during high school, but after graduation... If Nico was being honest, him moving to Venice had cut a lot of ties. He'd overworked himself so much in the early period, he barely had time for his boyfriends, much less for friends. And everyone had kind of followed their own calling...
"What kind of show?" asked Nico after a few moments.
"A magic show. They work as magicians on the strip," Hazel's eyes sparkled. "Wanna come?"
Well, how could he say no to that? A magic show in Las Vegas. Heh, that did kind of suit Lou Ellen and Alabaster. Using their magic to put on a show and gain fame.
"But let me text Jason and Percy so they know where I am..."

Hazel had near instantly fallen in love with Las Vegas. Her and Nico's friends had been friends too but she'd never considered them to be best friends or anything. So they had ranked lower on her list. But it had been love at first sight with this city when she had walked the strip with Lou Ellen and saw her first show.
"You have chosen a very beautiful place, sweetheart."
Hazel smiled proudly at those words. "Thank you, mamma. I was... I just knew it, when I walked past it, I knew that this would be the perfect store."
On one of her walks through Vegas, she had found this little shop that was for sale. And it had just spoken to her. Didn't know right away what to do with it, but after telling Lou Ellen and Alabaster about it, a plan started to form in her mind and the two of them were on board quickly. A magic store. Selling gems and trinkets for tourists, card-readings and aura-readings, but also real magic, for other magic-users like them. And for the heroes who didn't use magic themselves; there was a huge market for magical artifacts and spells in the superhero community.
She's brought those plans to her parents. An actual Power Point presentation of what she wanted to do with this place, including profit projections and all that. Because she didn't want Hades and Persephone to just buy it for her, she wanted them to invest in her. And they had.
"Well, I am looking forward to what you do with it," offered Hades.
"There's still a lotta work to do. We got contractors coming in early next week, picked paint and all," Lou Ellen sounded so excited, waving her hands around. "It's gonna be great."
She looked so different from how she had during their high school years. Taller. Her hair was longer too, she wore it in a side-cut now, the longer parts dyed purple but her natural brown showing at the sheered-short part. She looked good, settled in herself.
There was a proud smile on Hades' lips. "You kids really do have it all planned out."
Hazel had never pictured things to work out that way. To just.. come to her. Alabaster walked over to them and wrapped one arm around Lou Ellen's shoulders, the other around Hazel's. Sure, the siblings loved their show, but the side-business seemed like a neat gig too and Lou Ellen, at the very least, knew that she didn't want to do the whole Vegas magician thing for forever.

Reyna stood there with a dufflebag over her shoulder. Her hair was in a strict bun and there was something distant about her eyes. Scars on her arms where Nico could see. It had been nearly a year since he last saw her and it was clear she was changed.
"How are you doing?" asked Nico, unsure how to proceed. "Sorry, stupid question."
"It's okay," Reyna offered a quirky smirk. "I... Thank you, for having me. I didn't really know... where else to go. Going back to Annabeth to ask if I can stay with her seemed strange and..."
Nico smiled and led the way inside. "Of course. But our guest room is already occupied, so I do hope you won't mind the couch for the time being? It's a good couch."
"Anything with a roof seems good to me for now and I've slept on worse than a couch."
Of course she had. She'd been in active war-zones for the past half year. Part of Nico still couldn't grasp that. A year ago, she'd started training for active duty with a private firm. Her sister's private firm. The Amazons, an all-female team of super-powered soldiers that came to aid in war and critical zones. And then she'd been deployed for half a year.
"Did it... help you?" asked Nico when the two of them sat down on the couch. "I mean, you did it because you were looking for something, still, right? And did it help...?"
Reyna leaned back, running her fingers through her hair. "I don't know. It put things in perspective. Seeing people who lost everything to war... The training had me more focused. But I can't... I quit, because I can't go there again. I do know that I want to use my powers for good still. Maybe this is the jumping point for me to become a hero now. I wanted the life-experience. I got it."
"I heard the door, who's at the door? Is that the pizza I ordered?"
Both Reyna and Nico turned toward the voice as Piper walked into the living room. She was wearing boxers and a tank-top. As soon as she stepped into the room, she paused, looking at Reyna.
"Hey..." Piper trailed off for a moment. "Haven't seen you since graduation."
"Yeah," Reyna tilted her head. "So you're taking up the guest room, I take it?"
"Ye—ep. Reorienting myself or whatever," Piper offered a crooked grin. "You here to stay too?"
She motioned at the dufflebag, Reyna following her line of sight. "Yeah. For... the time being."

"I love you," whispered Percy in a low voice.
Jason turned his head to get a proper kiss. "Love you too. What got you in that mood?"
"Saving lives," Percy grinned broadly, kissing along Jason's neck. "Nico and I saved lives today. Rescued a bus of school children. I feel... I feel so..."
"That's the adrenaline," Jason laughed softly and turned around fully to face Percy.
"Please stop doing whatever this is because it would require a lot of therapy for me."
Jason and Percy startled apart and turned toward Piper, walking into the kitchen and heading for the fridge. Right. Because Percy no longer had the place to himself and his boyfriends. No, both his boyfriends had – without consulting him – invited people to live here. Taking a deep breath to try and calm down that adrenaline, Percy headed out of the kitchen. And it wasn't that he would have kicked Reyna or Piper out and not allowed them to stay, it was just... he was pissed that he didn't even get asked. Both of them had just immediately agreed without even telling anyone.
"You... okay? You look mad?"
Reyna was already on the balcony, doing yoga. Of course she was. Two new roommates.
"I'm not... I just..." Percy groaned in frustration and sat down on the seating arrangement outside. "I was two seconds from seducing my boyfriend when his sister walked in."
"Ah," Reyna offered a wry smile. "You... okay with us staying here though...?"
"Of course!" Percy threw his hands up. "It's just! It's... I wasn't even asked. It's my apartment too and I came home from work and suddenly, Piper was living in our guest-room. I came home from visiting Annabeth for a weekend and suddenly, you're sleeping on our couch."
Reyna winced and walked over to sit down next to Percy. "Sorry. I took Nico's yes as a collective yes from you guys. I didn't think..."
"That he wouldn't even ask? Yeah," Percy sighed. "I just... I'm not mad that they let you guys stay here because I know they got big hearts and I wouldn't kick you out either, but at the same time I am mad that I wasn't asked and also frustrated because finally, I had my boyfriends to myself! Just me, Nico and Jason, living together and being able to do whatever with each other wherever we want and now... we can't anymore because you're here..."
"I... understand that," Reyna tilted her head. "If it helps, I don't plan on staying for too long."
"It does..." Percy wiggled his nose. "But you can stay as long as you need, okay?"

Hazel grinned, pleased by herself, as she adjusted another item in the shelf. It looked so good. She loved how the shop had turned out. They'd chosen to paint the walls dark purple, decorated it to make it look a bit creepy and mystical, with lots of golden elements.
"Haze? You coming? It's nearly time for dinner."
Turning toward the back-door, Hazel saw Lou Ellen poke her head in. That was what she may love the most about Las Vegas. For the first time in years, she felt like part of a family again. Living with Piper had been nice, but it had been just her and Piper. Hazel had made some superficial friends, but she hadn't really gotten... attached... to people in New Orleans, always knowing she was going to leave again after college. But here, with Lou Ellen, Alabaster and Ethan, it kind of felt like a small family. They weren't just in business with each other, they also lived together now. Or, well, Hazel was living with Lou Ellen in the apartment above the shop. Because turned out that so far Lou Ellen had been living with Alabaster and Ethan and she was glad to get out of living with the couple.
"That smells absolutely divine," Hazel sniffed the air and licked her lips.
The two women had walked upstairs and into the kitchen, where Ethan was cooking curry. It was nice, having Lou Ellen's brother and brother-in-law over or being invited over to them. Hazel had missed these kind of things. Yes, sure, Nico dropped by on occasion, Hazel went to visit their parents in New York, but there was this physical distance between them. It was different from walking two blocks over and flopping down on Alabaster's couch.
"Ally wanted to cook, but I... thought it would be nice not to have food poisoning this week."
"Thank you, brother," Lou Ellen groaned. "I appreciate the life-save."
Alabaster sitting at the kitchen table flipped her off. "Can I give you up for adoption?"
"Too late for that," Lou Ellen stuck her tongue out at Alabaster.
Hazel shook her head and walked over to the cabins to set the table while the Torrington-Blackstone siblings bickered. Even that, Hazel loved. Bickering siblings made the place feel like home. The two reminded her so much of Bianca and Nico. Reminded her of her home.
"Did you hear back from the registration office yet?" asked Ethan. "Here, try."
Before she could answer, she had a spoon shoved in her mouth. "Mh, very good. And no, not yet."
Wanting to supply heroes meant she had to register with the official hero registry, even though she had no plans (yet) to act as an active hero. Which meant she had to pick a name too. That part had actually excited her a lot – and she still did have the long-term plan to be an active hero.
Golden Witch. She thought it had a nice ring to it and her eyes glowed golden when she accessed her magic so it seemed very fitting. And to match her name, the store was named the Golden Cauldron, with a cute sign with a golden cauldron dangling outside.
"Ally and I are going to Hawaii for our wedding anniversary. If the paperwork gets through..."
"We will handle it on our own," assured Hazel amused. "You should celebrate, seeing as you completely ditched the wedding celebration."
Nearly a year ago, Ethan and Alabaster had gotten married. After Alabaster and Lou Ellen's first big gig, they had celebrated and drunk and then ended up in a chapel, getting married by a Zeus impersonator, with Lou Ellen as their witness. That, honestly, seemed very on track for the two.

Reyna had been living in the boys' apartment for three weeks. She'd also been going to a group-therapy, because there were things she had taken with her from the war... Things she knew she had to deal with. Nico – and Jason and Percy – were supportive of her, told her to take care of herself for now. But she also knew that she was in the way. Every time she saw the boys whisper or kiss and then just stop because she entered the room. This was supposed to be their place, where they could fully enjoy their relationship. Instead, Nico and Jason had actually joined Reyna in the living room for a couple nights after Percy finally confronted them about being disappointed that they hadn't even consulted him about having people move into their apartment.
"How's the job hunting going?" asked Reyna, reaching into Piper's box of take-out.
Piper huffed, but she still tilted her box so Reyna could take the dumpling she was trying to get. "Eh. For now, I'm working as a barista. I just... I can't seem to find the right... I don't think I could work as a sidekick for someone again. I moved out of New Orleans to continue and move on, I can't go back to being someone's sidekick that way, you know?"
"Yeah, I get that," Reyna smiled. "But... No agency is going to hire a new hero fresh off of college. They look for someone who has had additional experience working as a sidekick."
Piper groaned softly and stuffed her face. Then she paused, looking at Reyna slowly. That look seemed ominous, but for now Reyna continued eating. Whatever thought was forming in Piper's mind, she was sure it would be shared in due time.
"Okay, hear me out," Piper waved her chopsticks around a little. "You and me, we both want to be heroes. We don't want to be sidekicks. We also really, really need to move out of my brother's apartment because if I walk in on him and Percy or Nico one more time, I will lose my mind..."
Reyna picked up another spring-role. "Following you so far."
"Let's go and look for a place together. Shared rent is more affordable, and I wouldn't want to live all alone," Piper kept waving her chopsticks while speaking so Reyna had to duck her. "And what if... we just... do it together? I think I have the experience to do it. What about you?"
"Wait, you don't mean..." Reyna blinked repeatedly, lowering her own chopsticks. "Huh."
"We graduated high school and college on the hero track, we have the necessary qualifications to open our own agency, or go out as single heroes. It's just existing agencies that are hard to get into as a hero because they want so much more experience before hiring. So why not skip that."
Tilting her head, Reyna looked at Piper. The two hadn't been super close in high school and hadn't seen each other in years. So they weren't likely to run into the same kind of troubles that Nico and Percy had, where deep feelings got in the way of working together. It would be nice to become a hero, but if she was honest, she didn't think she could or wanted to do it alone. Having a partner made it sound less scary. And having someone to move in together also sounded good, because living all on her own, she had never done that before.
"Okay," Reyna leaned in, holding her chopsticks up. "To a good partnership."
Piper laughed, smacking her chopsticks against Reyna's "To a good partnership indeed."
Author's note: So we're going to tackle how the life of the other future Olympians, aside from Nico and Percy, are going in sets of three, like this chapter! With, uh, some additional guests because otherwise they won't be sets of three, due to the Nico and Percy. Next chapter is going to feature Annabeth, Thalia and as a non-Olympian guest, Grover, because c'mon Percy is not gonna leave his best friend behind just because their lives go into different directions ;)
