Chapter 18
a/n 2 boys... sitting at school... no seats apart cuz they ain't human
1.
"I had a dream that it was Christmas." Greyn announced as he sat down at the table
"It's October 2nd." Luke flipped through a book and sipped tea.
"Right, I've sorted all the papers and things and you'll be starting school on next today." Greyn made a face. Sarah Jane set down admission papers. "I had to assume age, but you're around 14, right? Don't give me a look, the principal is across the street and he was asking me questions the other day."
"Well, 14's the right century." Greyn answered Sarah Jane's question. Luke choked on his tea. "What, disappointed I'm too old for you?"
Luke blushed. "What do you mean?"
"Nothing. See you at school."
2.
"Smith, Luke?" The teacher took the role in their first class.
"Here."
"Smith, Greyn?"
"What?"
"You're supposed to say 'here'" Luke whispered
"Where?"
"No, just say here."
"You aren't making any sense."
"Sorry, professor. He's always been homeschooled."
"Spaceschooled."
"Yeah, well we can't exactly say that, can we?"
"You're very pale, you know that? You're suffering from a deficiency of vitamin ME."
"You're unbearable."
"No, I'm a compound of barium and beryllium."
"Oh no."
"Cmon, work with me, my science puns rarely get a reaction."
3.
It was thanksgiving. 10:43. Greyn was asleep on a couch, his face smashed into Luke's shoulder while he played Mario Kart 7 against Rani. Rani was winning. By a lot.
Greyn woke with a gasp, jerking his head away from Luke's shoulder. His eyes were wide and panicked, his face pale. "You okay?" Luke brushed his hand to the side of Greyn's head. Greyn pulled away.
"'M fine." he rubbed his head. "Just a bad dream."
"Alright."
"Your sweater is scratchy."
"It is."
4.
The new fallen powder padded their footsteps as they walked to school. An epidemic of snow had swept through the streets overnight. The evening light had begun to set early in the creeping winter as Greyn and Luke walked back to 13 Bannerman Road. Neither boys noticed the car hurtling towards them as they crossed the street until it was almost too late. Luke shoved Greyn out of the way, pushing him to the ground. The car lights shined into their retinas, leaving burning lights in their worlds.
"Holy shit."
"Yeah, pretty much."
5.
"Hey Greyn? Breakfast is ready." there was no answer. "Greyn? Are you awake?" There was no noise. "Well obviously you're awake. You snore." a pause. "Greyn?" Luke pushed open the door. The room was empty.
