Lois sits eagerly on the couch as Clark continues his story. It has already been a night of confessions, but Lois sits eagerly on the couch waiting to hear about Clark's high school sweetheart.
"So, Lana." Clark begins with a large sigh.
"Lana." Lois reaffirms, as she can tell there's baggage there.
"Well I guess I should start at the beginning." Clark says.
"At the end of every season, there is a big fall harvest in Smallville. It was here were I first met her." Clark reminisces.
Smallville 27 years ago
Martha Kent arrives at the Smallville harvest and prepares to set up he booth. She takes Clark over to the children's area. She put him in the playpen with the other children. A little girl with orange pigtails came over to him. It was close to Halloween time, and all the kids had costumes on. She was dressed up as a fairy princess. Clark was dressed up as a cowboy himself.
"Hi." She said.
"Hello." Clark said back with a big smile.
"I like your belt buckle." She said.
Clark looked down at his oversized belt buckle with a picture of a horse on it.
"Thanks." He said, with a goofy grin still on his face.
"I have horsey's." The little girl continued.
"Cool." Clark said.
"What's your costume?" Clark then asked.
"I'm a fairy princess." She said, waving her wand.
"Make a wish." She said.
Clark never revealed his wish, but he wished that they could be together forever.
"What's your name." Clark asked.
"Lana Lang." The girl said.
"I'm Clark Kent." Clark said.
"I feel like somewhere along the lines this story didn't end in happily ever after." Lois cut in.
"Well, let's go back to homecoming." Clark said.
"After my fight with Whitney, I was suspended for the rest of the week. But one night, I got a visitor.
Smallville 18 years ago
After the night where Clark found out where he was from, he became very reclusive. Johnathan figured to give him space and that he would talk about it when he was ready.
Late one evening, there was a knock at the door. Martha went to answer it.
"Lana?! What are you doing here?" Martha asked.
"I wanted to check on Clark, is he okay?" Lana asked.
"Oh he's fine, let me go get him." Martha said.
"Clark, you have a visitor." Martha called up the stairs.
Clark was very reluctant to exit his room. But when he saw Lana at the bottom of the steps, he began to feel better.
"La- Lana, hi." Clark said, in a little bit of shock.
"You doing okay?" Lana asked.
"Yeah." Clark said softly.
Just then Johnathan walked into the room.
"Uh Johnathan, aren't the Flintstone's on?" Martha asked as the two exited the room.
"Maybe we should talk outside." Clark suggested, and the two headed out onto the front porch.
"You sure you're okay Clark?" Lana asked again.
"I'm fine." Clark said.
"You really scared us at school earlier this week." Lana said.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. How is Whitney?" Clark asked.
"He has a broken hand." Lana said.
Clark looked down in shame.
"But before all that happened, were you going to ask me something?" Lana asked.
"Um, well I-" Clark said all flustered.
Clark may have recently learned that he was an alien from another planet with extraordinary powers, but in that moment, he was just a boy standing in front of a girl.
"Come on Clark, just ask." Lana said.
"Well, it's just that you know, homecoming is coming up and I-" Clark freezes mid-sentence.
Lana puts her arm on Clark's shoulder. Clark looks at her hand, then he looks into Lana's eyes. Lana leans forward and gives Clark a kiss. It was Clark's first kiss.
"Clark, I'd love to go with you." Lana said.
"Really?!" Clark said with a cracked voice, in shock and delight.
"Yes!" Lana reaffirmed.
"Great!" Clark said.
"Well, I better get going." Lana said.
Clark watches Lana disappear into the night. He then heads inside feeling energized.
"Ma, Pa, Lana agreed to go to homecoming with me!" Clark said.
"Oh Clark, that's wonderful." Martha said.
"But wait, what about my powers?" Clark asked.
"What about them?" Martha asked.
"If Lana ever found out, there's no way she'd accept a freak like me." Clark said.
"Don't say that Clark." Johnathan said.
"It's true. I never want to use my powers." Clark said.
"Clark, your powers are your own. Only you can choose when or how to use them. And it's up to you and you alone as to whom you want to share your secret with." Martha said.
"I have to keep them from Lana, for now at least." Clark said.
"So you didn't tell her?" Lois asks.
"Well, not at that time. I was still coming to grips with them myself. But, a few years later we were seniors. And it was almost time for prom." Clark says.
Smallville 14 years ago
Prom was five weeks away, and Clark had made a very bold decision. He was going to reveal his true self to Lana. He had talked to his mother about it, and received her blessing. One day, he took Lana out into the middle of his corn field.
"Clark, what are we doing here?" Lana asked.
"We've been together a long time." Clark said.
"Almost four years. That kind of longevity is rare in high school." Lana said.
"We've been through so much together, home coming, winter formals. Not to mention, I don't think I could have gotten through my Pa's death without you." Clark said, getting choked up.
"What's this about Clark?" Lana asked.
"Lana take my hands." Clark said.
Lana reaches out for Clark, and he pulls her in close.
"I feel so safe in your arms." Lana said as she closes her eyes.
Suddenly, she felt a breeze. Lana opened her eyes to see that they were ten feet off the ground.
"Wh- What's going on Clark?" Lana asks.
"Lana, it's time I let you in on my biggest secret." Clark said.
Clark then revealed everything to Lana. All of the amazing things he could do.
"So- so you've been hiding this from me for all these years?" Lana asked.
"I wanted so badly to tell you, but I never knew how." Clark said.
"Clark, it's like I don't even know you." Lana said.
"But Lana." Clark said as he approached her.
"Just please, stay away from me right now. I need time to think." Lana said.
Lana ran off, as Clark just stood there, regretting he ever told her.
A couple days went by and their relationship went icy at school. Then, a couple of weeks later, Lana came to see him.
Clark was working alone in the barn when Lana stopped by.
"Hi." She said.
"Hi." Clark responded.
"I um, I've been doing a lot of thinking recently." Lana said.
"And." Clark said, eager to hear what she had to say.
"And, I do care for you Clark, but this, I just don't know if at eight-teen I can handle this." Lana said.
"So what are you saying?" Clark asked, though he knew the answer.
"Clark, I care for you, and I promise to keep your secret, but you and me, we're over." Lana said.
Clark looked down in grief, as Lana quietly left.
"You must have been devastated." Lois says.
"I was, the first person I ever revealed my secret to, and she rejected me." Clark says.
"So what happened to Lana?" Lois asks.
"Well she still ended up going to prom." Clark says.
"Oh?" Lois asks, intrigued.
"With Whitney Fordman." Clark says.
"Double ouch." Lois says.
"Well this is where the story gets dicey." Clark says.
"Following graduation, Whitney went into the service. And six months later he lost his life." Clark says.
"That's so sad." Lois says.
"It really made me think. Whitney and I never got along. But he wasn't bullet proof, and yet he still made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. It made me wonder what I could do to help others. He died a hero, I didn't realize it at the time, but I think the seeds for Superman were planted then." Clark says.
"It sounds to me like your parents always had you on the right track to becoming a good person." Lois says.
"But Lois, I learned something else then too. I've dated since then, but nothing serious. I always said that if I ever got serious again, I'd reveal my secret right away." Clark says.
"And are we serious?" Lois asks.
"Are we?" Clark asks back.
Lois leans forward and gives Clark a kiss.
"Yeah, we are." Lois says with a smile.
