Last time:
"You were right Sonic…you are just a Faker after all." Shadow said coldly; he would never forgive Sonic for what he said about Shadow moping about Maria. He would never understand.
But the moment the word 'Faker' slipped out of Shadow's mouth, he knew he had made a big mistake.
Before he had time to react and turn around, he felt Sonic's fist driving into his skull, and the world around him disappeared before his body hit the cold, muddy earth with a dull thud…
"Grandpa?" Maria asked, poking her head into Professor Robotnik's main lab, holding a five-year-old Shadow's hand in one of her own. The professor looked up from his work.
Chapter 4: Back to Christmas Island
"Yes honey? What do you want?" Gerald asked, rubbing his temples sleepily.
"Well, I don't know how to say this…ever since he was little, I took care of Shadow and played with him. But now that he's grown up a lot more, I can't always play with him like I used to…you know, because he's too strong and fast for me."
"Well, one day, while I was reading to Shadow the story about the three little pigs, Shadow said that he also wanted a brother just like the pigs. It was silly really, but it made me wonder…if, you know, if you could make another ultimate life form…" the professor raised an eyebrow. Shadow stayed silent, looking down at his chubby little air shoes.
"…because I think it's a really good idea. You know how you always tell me to double-check my work? Well, I think you should double-check and make another life form based on how you made Shadow just to see if the procedures that you took to make Shadow was…I don't know, stable or something…" Maria looked at her grandfather with the biggest puppy eyes she could make.
"…and plus, Shadow will have someone to play with when…you know." She looked down. She still hasn't told Shadow about her disease and how she might not live too long…
"Maria." The professor chuckled, "believe it or not, I've been thinking of-"
SPLASH!
Shadow felt something cold and wet splash against his face, interrupting his dream. Or perhaps it was not a dream…but a memory. He couldn't really tell these two apart nowadays, as he recently had started to remember bits and pieces of his childhood on the ARK almost daily.
SPLASH!
His eyes still closed, Shadow frowned and gave a rough grunt as more freezing water got thrown against his face. Shadow opened his eyes, only to close them immediately. It was too bright.
He opened them again; this time, slowly. As his vision became clear he looked around his surroundings. He was still in the forest, leaning against a tree in a sitting position, a small stream running nearby. He turned his head to the right to find Sonic kneeling besides him, his gloves wet with water. Sonic stared at him with a worried expression.
"You're awake." He said bluntly.
Shadow rolled his eyes,
"Very keen observation, Sonic." Sonic ignored Shadow's comment, and asked,
"Are you…I mean…do you feel ok?" he asked hesitantly. Shadow blinked, unsure of what Sonic was talking for a moment. Then, it came back to him…
"I'm not sure…" he touched the back of his head, but immediately regretted it,
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Shadow yelped, jumping up, as hot pain surged through the spot where he just touched. He hissed as he held his head with both hands, waiting for the pain to disappear. When it finally did, Shadow looked up angrily at Sonic, who was now staring at the ground.
"…hehe. Sorry." Sonic mumbled. Shadow snorted. Sonic looked up,
"Shadow…" he said hesitantly, "I'm so confused right now…I…you must know how I feel…right? I've thought it over, and now I know that…you're the only one who can help me…" Sonic asked, pleading silently with his eyes. Shadow watched him silently, crimson eyes observing olive ones. Shadow sighed.
"Yes Sonic, I do know how you feel, and I don't want you to make the same mistakes that I make."
Sonic looked at Shadow confusedly.
"What I mean is," Shadow said, walking up to Sonic, "Don't feel so confused and angry. I used to be angry and confused, and look at what I did: I tried to destroy the world!"
Sonic looked up, and gave a small grin.
"Yea, I guess you did…at least I'm not doing that, right?" Sonic asked.
"Yes, Shadow started, "and if there's anything that I've learned, it's that if you're a creation, you're creator doesn't make you who you are. YOU do. Look at Metal Sonic and Omega for example."
"Yeah, I guess," Sonic said, regaining some of his old self, "it's just that…I was just so surprised to hear about me being created. Believing it or not Shadow, I also wasn't too sure about my past until I heard Tails tell me. I don't know…the only thing I can remember is that I was born on Christmas Island…but…I don't know why…no matter how hard I try, I can't remember anything else…"
As Shadow listened, Sonic thought to himself.
Why am I spilling my guts out to Shadow out of all people now? I mean, he is my friend…but I've never told anyone anything that I haven't told Tails before…
"Well Sonic, you know there's only one way to find out about both your past. Come, we have to find your fox friend; we're going to pay the professor's lab on Christmas Island a little visit…"
"ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS SONIC?" Tails yelled over the loud engine of the Tornado.
"YES TAILS! JUST TAKE ME AND SHADOW TO THE PLACE WHERE YOU FOUND GERALD'S LAB!" Sonic replied back.
Tails fell silent for a moment, then asked,
"So…is Shadow now considered your…father?" Tails asked curiously.
"WHAT?" Sonic yelled, "YOU'LL HAVE TO SPEAK LOUDER!"
"I SAID SO IS SHADOW YOUR FATHER NOW!"
Shadow, who was laying face down on the wing of the Tornado nearly fell off as he heard Tails say that.
"NEVER SCARE ME LIKE THAT EVER AGAIN, KID!" Shadow said, poking his head out of the wing, "ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M LAYING ON A WING FIFTY METERS ABOVE THE GROUND!"
"He he…sorry." Tails said as gave a nervous little chuckle.
"So…this is it?" Sonic asked, sanding in front of something that looked like a high-tech abandoned warehouse. Most of it's dull, gray exterior were covered in vines, since it was surrounded by a jungle.
"Apparently." Shadow replied simply, already starting to search for an entrance. Sonic took a deep, nervous breath. Shadow raised an eyebrow at him.
"Don't be so nervous and worried Sonic. It doesn't suit you. Now come here and help me find an entrance, or are you too scared?"
Sonic glare at Shadow, but remained silent. Suddenly, a question rose up in Sonic's mind.
"Shadow…why are you so willing to help me?"
Shadow froze for a moment, but decided to ignore Sonic's question.
"Shadow?"
"I heard you the first time Sonic."
"Oh. Well?"
"Well what?" Shadow asked, getting a little annoyed. He suddenly found a door beneath a bunch of vines, and started to tear the vines away.
"Why are you so willing to help me?" Sonic asked again, "I mean, it's not like you to…voluntarily help someone just because you want to help."
Shadow ignored the question again. Instead, he said,
"Are you going to help me open the door or just stand there and ask pointless questions?"
"Ok ok, I'll help. Sheesh, don't be so grumpy." Sonic quickly ran over to the metallic door, and together they managed to kick open the heavy door. Inside was what seemed like a dark, narrow hallway…
"OUCH! Shadow, that's my FOOT!" Sonic yelled, stumbling through the never-ending dark hallway.
"Well that's payback for when you 'accidentally' tripped and grabbed onto my chest fur, ripping half of it OUT!" Shadow replied, still massaging his chest.
"Hey, it WAS an accident. Dammit, why doesn't this place have any LIGHTS!" Sonic yelled in frustration.
As if to reply, a robotic voice suddenly spoke out of nowhere monotonously.
"Experiment #230 Project: SHADOW detected. Experiment #231 Project: SONIC detected. Activating lights. Activating pre-recorded message number one."
The narrow hallway was suddenly lit, and Sonic saw that the voice was coming form one of the many speakers attached to the low ceiling. A new voice began to say something. Both Shadow and Sonic recognized it as Professor Gerald Robotnik's…
"Ah, hello Shadow and Sonic. I never expected you two to come here together, but then again, that why I recorded this message. Follow the hallway until you reach a locked door. It will require a password. The password is: BANANAS. I'll tell you two more when you go through the door."
Sonic looked at Shadow.
"Bananas?" He asked. Shadow shrugged.
"His favorite fruit were bananas for some reason."
"…..ooook."
The two kept on walking until they reached a large, metallic sliding door. Just as The Professor had said, there was a number pad in which you had to put in a password.
Shadow typed BANANAS, and the door slid open, revealing enormous room that looked like a lab and workshop combined. The whole room was littered with spare machine parts and papers with complicated equations written on them. Suddenly, a big screen on one of the walls turned on, revealing the face of Gerald Robotnik. He began to talk…
Here's a question: If you were to write a fanfiction, what would you like to see the most? Answer: LOTS AND LOTS OF REVEWS!
