1952

"May I have the pleasure of this dance, Mrs. Farnon?"

The woman smiled up at him and took the hand he was offering her. They would take care of the dishes later.

"Have you planned the whole night?" She asked, a cheeky smile on her face.

"It's our tenth anniversary, my darling, it doesn't happen all the time."

"On that, we must agree."

Siegfried chuckled at his wife before turning off the radio and approaching the turntable. The music filled the room after a few seconds.

They easily found each other, years of experience had taught them how well they fit together.

"I've never heard this song." She whispered against his shoulder, her left hand on his scalp, the other intertwined with his.

The vet hummed, his cheek against her head and his eyes closed.

How the thought of you, does things to me, never before has someone been more...

"It's quite new." He mumbled, holding her tighter, his hand caressing her back with slow movements.

Unforgettable, in every way, and forevermore

"It made me think of you when I first heard it."

She raised her head and his heart swelled. He knew he'd never get tired of the way she looked at him.

"Is that so?"

He brought their joined hands to his chest, leaving hers there.

That's why darlingIt's incredible,That someoneSo unforgettable,Thinks that I amUnforgettable too

"I can't believe I got to marry you, a lucky bastard indeed." He grinned and she slapped his chest.

"Don't use those words, you know I don't like it."

"Oh, but it's true. And how beautiful you were that day... You still are."

"With the grey hair and new wrinkles every day? Barely."

Siegfried sighed before kissing her, holding her against his body as the very first day they shared a kiss.

"Audrey Farnon, always the most beautiful woman in town."

"Silly, silly man." She answered on his mouth.

He hummed and kissed his wife again. When they were lucky enough to share such moments, he was able to forget that he was, in fact, in the middle of his sixties.

"You look stunning in this dress, is it new?" He asked and she raised her eyebrows before shaking her head.

"It's quite old, I just made some changes."

Siegfried kept smiling, he knew his wife's abilities and wasn't too surprised.

"It's beautiful and the woman who is wearing it is breathtaking. "

"Aren't you full of praises today?" She tilted her head to the right.

"Breakfast in bed, the flowers, that way too expensive necklace, you even managed to cook dinner and the Lord knows where you learned that."

He smiled proudly and sent a blessing to Mrs Simmons, her pudding's recipe was almost as good as Audrey's.

"Can a husband appreciate his wife?"

"Sure he can." Her eyes softened "Thank you."

With a sigh she held him tighter, Siegfried's face rested between her neck and shoulder, a spot that after the first days together quickly became one of his favourites.

"Do you have any more surprises for me?" Audrey asked with an innocent voice, but when she raised her head again he noticed that her eyes were telling a different story.

"Maybe."

She blushed and that was something that had never changed it, despite all that time.

"I didn't mean... that."

"That?" He raised his eyebrows.

"Don't be naughty. "

"I need to remove that from my list, then?"

Audrey shot him a look.

"Don't say it like..."

"Like?"

"Like we do that only on special occasions."

"Don't we?"

She looked at him in horror, her mouth slightly open.

"I suppose two nights ago I was sharing my bed with another man then."

This time he was the one to look at her surprised, oh how marvelous his wife was.

"Thou shalt not commit adultery." Siegfried challenged her and her eyes sparkled "Should I start questioning your fidelity, woman?"

"Never take anything for granted, my dear."

He laughed and kissed her.

"You could help me remember where I was two nights ago."

"Mmh?" Her hand rested on his cheek, caressing his beard that she was so glad he decided to keep even after it started turning grey.

She dropped delicate kisses all over his face and, in a matter of seconds, he was melting against her.

"Aud... darling." He murmured, his hands full of her soft curves "you're beautiful."

"And now we're delirious." Audrey chuckled but lifted her chin when he started kissing her neck.

"Will it ever stop? The wanting and the feeling of being wanted by you?" She asked more to herself than him.

"How could I ever stop wanting you." He said, raising his hands to hold her face, his eyes admired her face once more. She was beautiful.

"I wish I had found you sooner." She confessed and sighed when her husband's eyebrows frowned, her chest suddenly heavy. "I cherish what we have, but sometimes I am afraid we won't have enough time. It's silly I know, we had ten years, the happiest of my life, but we could have been together for twenty or more if..."

Siegfried's eyes were full of pain now, but compassion and understanding too. He knew his wife and her insecurities as well as she knew him.

"My love, we wouldn't have been the same. You wouldn't have had Edward... can you imagine a life without him?"

Her lower lip started to tremble and she shook her head, lowering her gaze.

"And without Evelyn I wouldn't have been the same man. Oh my dear, we wouldn't even meet. Can you even think about that?"

"No, no I can't." She quickly wiped away a tear that had found its way down her cheek.

"We'll have our twenty years together. And our thirty too, if we're lucky "

Siegfried smiled but deep down he understood and shared her fears. She had no idea how many nights and mornings he spent watching her sleep thinking about how things could have gone differently.

But he knew that having Audrey in his arms, and being held by her, was the only thing that really made sense. And when he lay down beside his wife with his mind full of thoughts and reached for her, she had never failed to make him feel at peace.

"Audrey" he stroked her cheekbones with slow movements before kissing her forehead "I love you. And in ten years I hope I'll still be here to tell you so."

Her expression changed then and he smiled at her.

"Of course you'll be alive, don't you dare to die before me, Siegfried Farnon."

"Dead? Oh no. I was thinking more of me running off with the housekeeper."

As soon as she understood his words, she hit him hard on his shoulder and laughed. He instantly joined her.

"We don't even have an housekeeper!"

"That's because you never listened to me when I tell you that we should hire someone to help us around the hous-"

"Oh, be quiet now." She said and reached for his hand again. "The song ended."

"Ours not, not yet."

Audrey sighed, she loved him deeply.

"Not yet." She agreed with her husband, before heading upstairs, taking him with her.
