It had been six months since her parents had shown their support for her relationship with her cousin, Rose, and Dominique had found it easier to show her more affection in public.
Several members or their family - in particular, her aunt Hermione, and her grandma - did not approve and made sure they knew it by either tutting or sending disapproving stares their way.
She knew that Rose had been finding it quite difficult, and one day she was going to be forced to choose between her parents, and her. It was a day that Dominique dreaded.
And one which was to come much sooner than she expected.
Hearing the floo activate in the kitchen made her frown as she knew they were not expecting any guests.
The moment Rose came rushing through the door in tears, Dominique knew there was something bad had happened.
"What's wrong?" she asked, jumping up to console her girlfriend.
"I can't take it anymore!" she burst out, "Why can't she just love me the way I am?"
Dominique instantly knew who the 'she' was, and hoped that what she said wasn't too bad, even though it obviously hurt.
"Come here," she said gently. Pulling Rose into her arms. "I'm so sorry, my love."
The two girls were so focused on each other that neither of them noticed the arrival of Bill and Fleur until they were stood right next to them.
"What happened?" Bill asked, concern lacing his voice.
"My mum, she-she told me it was time to stop playing around and find someone to settle down with. I told her that I already had, and that Dom and I were serious. She just said that I was going through a phase," Rose explained.
Dominique had never seen her parents look so angry before. They looked furious and she was glad that she was not on the receiving end of their combined tempers this time.
"I will call a family meeting at The Burrow to discuss things. These comments and attitudes cannot go on. No one - not even your mum - has any right to treat you that way," Bill said with barely suppressed anger.
"If you want us to speak on your behalf because you don't want to be there then we can," Fleur added.
"What do you think?" Dominique asked.
Sniffling, Rose said, "I think we need to tell them ourselves that this is real and it's not going away."
"That is a brave choice. You must be prepared for some of the family to stop talking to you," Fleur said gently.
"It's something we have to do. If they don't accept us then that's their problem not ours. It will hurt, but we will be better for it," Dominique told them vehemently.
"We will stand by you; always," Bill said with conviction.
Dominique had been happy to know that her parents supported them, but to find out just how far they were willing to go completely blindsided her.
