Chapter 1

The way of Shadow

The night was eerily calm. The trees of the forest were as still as tombs, leaves silently blowing in the light breeze as the moon hung heavy over the woods. The animals had gone into their dens for rest until the next day, dreaming that they would live to see the sun rise.

A lone man rode down a lone cobblestone road, his black cape waving behind him as he rode fast through the night. The armor he wore looked like it belonged in another world, three spikes protruding from his steel gauntlets and shin boots. His chest plate bore a raven emblem on his chest while his longsword and dagger were on his back and a hood attached to his cape covered his face with a black wrap, the only thing revealing were his bright orange eyes that burned like fire straight from the underworld itself and the only thing showing through the blackness.

"How much further until we reach our target Nasir?" The lone warrior asked his horse telepathically.

"Were here Simon." The horse answered his master as he came to a stop along the road. The Dark clad warrior dismounted his horse and landed on the cobblestone road with a thud coming from his boots. The horse disintegrated into a black and green mist and floated to Simon and reappeared as a Raven sitting on his shoulder.

"The target we are searching for is down this dirt path Simon. According to his wanted poster he has a pretty sizeable force guarding him, he's been causing trouble for passing travelers for months now and it looks like the mayor of sunstone village has had enough of his antics."

Simon scoffed at the information, he began sprinting down the path at an almost unhuman like speed, green and black mist following behind him as he silently ran down the path with Nasir flying close to him matching his speed. "We have faced worse odds than this one my friend, the money on this one's head will be far better than some of the other marks we've gone after."

Simon came to the end of the dirt path and a cliff stood before him. He jumped and grabbed onto the first ledge he could reach, he then leapt from the first ledge to the edge of the sixteen foot cliff, a green shade of himself partially revealing itself over Simon's body and crawled his way up onto his feet at the top. He made his way through the shrubbery until he came out on the other side and he saw what he was looking for.

In front of him was and old chapel like temple, decrepit and crumbling with torn banners still hanging. Torches dotted the structure along with several makeshift barricades and walkways placed at the entrance. Multiple bandits wearing makeshift armor and armed with a variety of weapons from bows to clubs and swords guarded the ruins while some were picking through the bodies of Arendellian soldiers piled up a few feet away from the left of the ruins.

"Damn." Simon though aloud. "Those poor bastards were either poorly trained or not very good at paying attention. You would think that mere bandits couldn't take on a whole squad of trained soldier."

"Your one to talk Simon, didn't you used to be one of them before your transformation into a wraith born?" Nasir commented.

"Shut up Nasir!" Simon snapped back bitterly. "I am no longer one of them, and to think I used to like being in the military but they're no better than some other people, after one incident they automatically think of me as a monster that shouldn't exist."

"Well regardless of what you think Simon, you are so much better now that what you were, normal people can't look upon glory when they see it, and you show these bandits the power that you now wield."

"Right, Lets show them and get our pay." Simon said, his confidence and composure back to where they were. Simon jumped down off the cliff and landed on the forest floor. He walked his way up to the front entrance of the ruin where two bandits were watching.

"Well now look who we have here, another so called hero!" one of the bandits shouted, walking towards Simon. The other one on lookout whistled loudly, alerting his comrades of the approaching intruder. "Listen here you bastard, we own these woods now, if you want to get out of here alive, you'll give us everything you have or ill gut you like a fat whore."

Simon drew his longsword from its scabbard and held it next to his side. "I've come here for you lot on account of your harassing of travelers on this road! Come quietly or pay the price!"

The bandits laughed at Simon before the first one got right in his face, his breath smelling of alcohol and pipe smoke. "Are you fucking serious right now? Your just one man, so this will be easy."

The bandit raised his axe to his side and swung it at Simon's neck, but in a split second Simon grabbed the axe out of the bandits hand and decapitated him so quick that the others never saw it happen until he threw the axe at the second bandits head, killing him instantly.

The bandits backed away several steps as they all looked at Simon. His eye shining like burning suns as he stared them all down. "Get him boys!" the remaining bandits rushed Simon with their weapons raised. Simon took his sword and began battling the bandits by himself, twisting and turning like a dance in a ballroom. His sword never missed its mark as he began cutting down the marauders one by one. His sword glowing a blackish green as he swung at one of them hitting his stomach but instead of dying the bandit's eyes turned green and began fighting for Simon.

"Oi lads, be careful were fighting a Wraith Born!" Simon turned to look ahead at a bandit archer standing on a wooden catwalk overlooking the main courtyard. He notched an arrow into his bow and raised it at him. He fired but missed as Simon teleported away from the others and right behind the archer. He unsheathed his dagger and slit the marauders throat, blood pouring from his neck as his body fell to the ground below with a heavy thud.

Simon turned into a partial wraith of himself and drew a spiritual bow and arrow. He fired into the supports of the main entrance of the ruins and the ethereal green arrows exploded, destroying the supports collapsing the archway to keep the remaining bandits inside of the ruins.

He jumped off the pillar and began descending towards the ground, time slowed down around him as he drew his ethereal bow again and began firing arrows into the bandits below, killing three of them before he landed in the middle of them. He raised his hand into the air as greenish black energy flowed from his body and shot out around him, raising the dead bandits to fight the remaining ones who were still there.

After a few minutes the remaining bandits were killed. Their lifeless bodies scattered across the courtyard. Nasir flew back onto Simons shoulder as he and his undead thralls walked to the cast iron door where the bandit leader was sure to be hiding.

"The scoundrel is in there, the mayor of sunstone village wants his head." Simon said to Nasir.

"Then he will receive his head"

Simon kicked the wooden door down and was met with a charging bandit who knocked him back down the steps into the courtyard.

"NO!" the bandit leader shouted through the ruins. He wore a full set of armor carrying a halberd. "Well well, so the puny shit of a mayor has to hire you to get rid of me. Damn he must be pretty desperate if he is willing to hire The Raven Mocker to come get Gut noose Gary. The bandit exclaimed arrogantly.

"I have already dealt with your thugs Gary, you have no one left and nowhere to run. Surrender now or you will be killed."

The bandit leader chuckled and whistled. Suddenly above him several archers appeared and drew their bows at him ready to send a volley of arrows.

"Leave them to me, just focus on the leader." Nasir assured Simon as he flew toward the archers. He then transformed into a blackish green mist and reappeared as a drake. The startled archers began to panic and stared shooting at Nasir while he breathed fire at them.

The bandit leader flew into a violent rage and charged Simon. The two battled for well over ten minutes but Simon was the better skilled. The leader swung his Halberd down on Simon but he teleported to his side and stabbed him in a weak spot on his armor. The Bandit howled in pain and swung at him again but Simon ducked under his swing and grabbed the bandits face with his hand. Just then the leader saw Simon's face transform into a spectral, half decayed façade as he stared into his bright orange eyes.

"You will suffer me now!" Simon yelled with a spectral voice as the bandit wailed in pain. His vision became distorted as he began to see the bandit's memories. He saw his private cambers, he saw the bandit leader sitting in his chair and in front of him a hooded figure dressed in ornate robes.

"Your work here is important." The hooded figure said "The grand skull is willing to pay you more for your services."

"Listen you wanker, I don't much trust you cultist types but if you're willing to pay me more for these kinds of raids I would be willing to jump, I'm already being hunted so it's not going to be cheap."

"Fair enough."

The memory abruptly ended and Simon still had the bandits face in his hand. With one swift motion he swung around and decapitated the bandit leader killing him instantly. The body fell to the earth with a thud as Simon tied the head to his belt to be delivered for the completion of the contract.

"Well that was a bit of an interesting find." Nasir stated as he was back in his raven form and flew onto Simons shoulder. "These cultist types are becoming more prevalent, first all the way at the southern border and now here so close to a major town. This is definitely unsettling.

"This matter doesn't concern us Nasir. Come, let us search his private quarters for anything valuable."

Raising his hand in the air and closing it into a fist, Simon disposed of his thralls as he and Nasir searched the Leaders private quarters. They found tons of loot including some food and water supplies, several large gold pouches and some miscellaneous gold and silver jewelry locked away in a chest. Inside of a safe next to the bed they found some pardon letters and two gold ingots.

"Not a bad haul for some basic work." Simon stated with a sense of accomplishment.

"It will suffice for what we are trying to accomplish. With the money we can purchase more supplies for the long journey ahead of us. Come Simon Triesmajice, we must get the trophy back to Sunstone village for the reward."

Simon agreed quietly with a hum of acknowledgement as Nasir turned back into a horse. Simon jumped onto him as they both disappeared back into the dark forest toward home. Another bounty complete for The Raven Mocker.
