AN: Sorry if I kept any of you waiting. I wanted to get this thing out earlier, but life is life, I suppose. Either way, in this chapter, we get to see our favourite Prince of Puzzles (and our only one). Also, any of you play Arkham Knight? You may be surprised by something here.
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
Riddler groaned as he slowly opened his eyes. He felt like shit, which was probably because he had spent all of last night, and most of the day too, monitoring the hotel and waiting for visitors. Unfortunately, no one had come, for whatever reason. He had only decided to go to bed five hours ago, realising that he needed to be awake to actually run his hotel. And now, he was awake, and rather sleep-deprived. He sat up in his bed, rubbing his head.
"Christ, what is it?" He mumbled, forcing himself out of the bed. He walked up to the source of the beeping. It was coming from the giant alarm he had set up on the wall. He sighed, grabbing a piece of paper, scribbling on it. "Note to self: Find less annoying noise for alarm."
Once he had written the reminder down, he pressed a button on the alarm, causing the beeping noise to stop. Soon, the wall moved back, revealing a computer screen. Riddler walked up to it, folding his arms. "Alright, what's the deal?"
The computer screen remained blank for a few seconds, before a burst of green static filled it. Soon, the static faded, displaying something else on it. It read:
'Visitors have entered Nygma Hotel. Quantity: 7.'
Riddler's eyes widened. "Really?" He pondered aloud. He had been waiting for visitors for so long, he was wondering if the announcement had even gone out. He shook his head. "Show me, then," he ordered.
The computer screen was engulfed with static yet again, before fading into a screenshot of seven teenagers. Strangely enough, there were no parents. But Riddler didn't care about that little nugget of information. He was still getting over the fact that he had finally gotten some guests.
"Huh, it's about time. Well, I might as well..."
He trailed off as a thought crossed his mind. "Wait. Did the scanners..."
Before he could finish his sentence, the answer showed up on the screen. 'Four out of seven visitors exhibit powers. One has unidentifiable object that supplies power."
This surprised Riddler even more. His first guests just so happened to have superpowers. Well, most of them, anyway. "What are the odds?" He muttered, scratching his chin. He glanced over at the wall of his office, which was covered in blueprints and notes that had been haphazardly glued onto the wall. He began to think. There were only seven people... All the tech was working...
A smile crossed his face. An opportunity had fallen onto his lap, and like hell he was just going to let it go. He walked up to his computer, sitting down in front of it. He began to press a few keys, until he found what he was looking for. He thought for a bit before he typed in 00:30. Good things came to those who waited, after all. Besides, seeing the looks on their faces would be worth it after giving some time to think this was just a normal hotel. With that, he flicked a switch. A soft beep filled the room as the computer shut down. Riddler laughed as he stood up, watching as the computer disappeared behind the wall.
Perfect. All he needed to do now was to get dressed. Then, he would wait.
This was going to be fun.
As soon as the group entered the hotel, the first thing they noticed was that the lobby was nearly entirely green. The walls were green, the counter was green, the carpets were green... hell, even the chandelier was emitting a green fluorescent light.
Harleen was the first to comment. "What's with all the green?" She asked, squinting her eyes. "I've seen less green in one of Pam's drawings!"
Pam looked around the room, taking it all in. "Well, from what I remember, the Riddler always had a thing for green. I suppose that never left him." She looked back at Harleen, a confused look on her face. "And since when do you look at my drawings?"
Harleen froze. "Um... never!" She smiled nervously, letting out an awkward chuckle. Pam just glared at her as she turned her attention back to her plant.
"Do you have any idea what's up with her?" A brief silence followed before Pam sighed, her frown growing larger. "Yeah, me neither."
Leslie quickly ran forward, shoving Pam out of the way and onto the floor. As Doris helped the redhead up, Leslie stopped by the counter. However, she then noticed that there was no one actually at said counter. She began ringing the bell. "Hello? Anybody there? Paying customers here."
Suddenly, a loud sound filled their ears. It sounded like a blast door opening. Leslie looked over the counter and saw that a trap door had opened. Right when she was about to question it, something popped out of it, causing her to jump back.
"Jesus!" She yelped. The rest ran up to her.
"What? What is it?" Carol asked.
Leslie just stared at whatever it was, causing the rest to look at it too. It... wasn't a human. It was a robot. It was nearly completely silver, with the exception of its eyes and the green orb in its chest, which looked to be its power source. They all stood in silence as the robot stood a good few feet over them, its green eyes practically staring holes through them.
Harleen was the first to speak. "Um, hello?"
Instantly, the robot raised its arms into the air. "Welcome to Nygma Hotel!" It announced, its voice loud. "Where the kids can play and the adults can stay the day away!" It held out a hand. "How may I be of service to you?"
The group just stared in shock. It was already a shock to see a full-on robot here, but it was a bigger shock to see that it was presumably running the lobby. Eventually, Barbi stepped forward, clearing her throat.
"I have a question," she said. The robot just leaned forward.
"Good to know! What is it?"
"Where are the people?"
The robot just threw its head back and bobbed its head up and down, as if it was laughing. "Laugh. Laugh. Laugh," it droned. When it was done laughing (if you could even call it that), it looked at Barbi. "There are no people here! Well, minus our wonderful owner, Mister Edward Nygma. All of the workers here are us - his Riddlerbots! Credit for creation goes to LexCorp."
Barbi took a step back, obviously weirded out. "There's no people?"
"Not at all, young one!"
Barbi forced a smile onto her face as she turned back to the rest. "This is bloody bizarre," she hissed through gritted teeth.
Selina saw Carol walking up to the counter, staring into the robot's eyes. "Can we check in, already?" She asked impatiently.
The robot paced its hands on its hips. "Of course! Which one of you is paying?"
They all pointed at Barbi, who quickly regained her composure. "It's me." She pulled out a credit card. "We would like three rooms please."
"Why, certainly!" That robot leaned forward, its face nearly touching Barbi's nose. "Simply scan your credit card!"
Barbi muttered something under her breath as she quickly swiped the card over the red scanner, which flashed green. This caused the robot to clasp its hands together.
"You have booked three rooms! Good for you all! You'll soon be escorted to them. And, per customer policy..."
It reached under its desk, rummaging around for a few seconds. Eventually, it found what it wanted, pulling up seven strange looking bracelets. Like practically everything else in the hotel, they were green. However, they were also covered in black question marks. Hesitantly, Barbi took them, passing them onto the rest, who put them on.
After standing in silence for so long, Selina decided it was time to actually say something. "What are these for?" She asked, stepping up to the counter, the bracelet fastened onto her wrist.
"They are customer bracelets!" God, the robot's overly cheery voice was starting to get on her nerves. "To show that you are really what keeps this little place alive!"
Selina groaned as she placed a hand to her forehead. Was Lex on drugs to think that these lines were good? Was it Edward's decision? What he on drugs? Either way, this lobby-bot was sounding more and more like a character from an old, crappy children's book.
She felt her train of thought be derailed when she heard a short gasp. She looked over to the source of the noise, and saw Carol reaching for something in the robot's hands. "Give it back!" She shrieked, causing Selina to squint her eyes. Give what back? It didn't look like it had taken anything from her.
Then she saw her hand. The hand that no longer held the Pink Lantern Ring. The ring that was now in the hand of the robot.
The robot just waved its finger. "Tut. Tut. Tut. No jewellery allowed here." It placed it in a small green box. "It will be returned once your time here has finished."
Carol just let out a few small squeaks of protest, her eyes looking as though they were just about to pop out of their sockets. Eventually, she just folded her arms. "Asshole," she muttered.
The sound of the elevator dinging rang throughout the room, causing them to look at it. When the door opened, another robot walked out, holding a cart. Unlike the one at the lobby, this one wore a bellhop's hat. It walked up to the desk, stopping by them.
"Please place your luggage on the cart." Its voice was a lot more monotonous and quiet than that of the lobby-bot. The group just placed their bags on the cart, causing the robot to nod. "Excellent. Follow me to your rooms."
After it had said that, it speed-walked into the elevator, beckoning them to follow it. The group quickly ran up to him, squishing themselves into the elevator.
"Jeez, ya got a family elevator somewhere?" Harleen asked, her hand sticking into Doris's mouth.
"Not a feature of hotel."
With that, the elevator's doors closed, and they all felt themselves moving up the hotel. Soon, the doors opened, revealing a green hallway with doors on both sides of it. The bellhop walked out, with the rest falling out.
Leslie stood up. "Where are our rooms?" She ran to catch up the bellhop. It didn't answer. "Hello? Are you glitching? I asked a question."
The bellhop still didn't answer. After a good thirty seconds of walking and Leslie pestering it with questions, it stopped near a door with the number 212, turning to the rest of the group.
"Your three rooms are 212, 213, and 214. We have also taken the liberty of distributing you evenly in these rooms."
Doris looked away from the painting she was admiring to stare at the bellhop. "Liberty of huh?"
"Distributing you evenly in these rooms." It pointed to Carol, Doris, and Barbi. "You will be in room 212." It then pointed at Leslie and Selina. "You two will be in room 213. And the remaining two will be in room 214. Do not attempt to deviate from the arrangements, in order to avoid any potential chaos. Failure to comply with rules will result in immediate expulsion." It led go of the luggage cart, taking a (rather stilted) bow. "Enjoy your stay." It then walked away before disappearing into the elevator, leaving the group alone and in silence.
Doris was the first to break the silence. "What was that about? Why'd he split us up like that?"
Selina rolled her eyes. "Doris, we booked three rooms. You know that."
This caused the jock to frown. "That's not what I meant. Why'd that hunk of junk split us up into specific groups?"
Barbi shrugged. "I don't know, do I? Do I look like the person running this place?" She folded her arms. "I guess it's part of its programming."
Doris sighed, leaning against the wall. "It's lame. What if I wanted to stay with Pam? I mean, I don't, but it'd be lame if I actually did."
"Yeah, and how are we supposed to talk with each other and shoot the shit?" Leslie asked. "This Ed guy seems like a nut."
Everyone seemed to be a little annoyed with the whole thing. Well, except two. Carol, though that was because she was staring at her phone for the entire time the bellhop was speaking and even now, and Harleen, who actually looked excited.
"Cool! I get to stay with Pammy!" She pulled Pam into a hug. "We's sleeping together!"
Pam, who had spent the entirety of her time in the hotel with a bored, belated expression, suddenly looked mildly horrified. "What?" She wrestled her way out of Harleen's grasp. "No! I'm not sleeping with you!"
The corners of Harleen's mouth shrunk a little. "What's wrong with little ol' me? I'm everything you need in a friend!" She posed. "I'm funny, fun-loving, all 'round badass... I'm the complete package!"
This display only caused Pam to recoil with an unbelievable look of irritation on her face. "Ugh." She turned to Doris. "Can you switch with me?"
Doris shook her head. "No way. I just peeked in my room and there are some ice cream cartons on the table that are half-full! Free food!" She punched the air, smirking.
Barbi looked at Pam. "Besides, as much I'd like to be in my own room, away from you lot, the robot will kick us out if we deviate." She stretched. "And I really need to sleep on something comfy after that car trip."
Pam just groaned as she looked back at Harleen who just looked as cheerful as usual, feeling the frown on her face grow larger. Just her luck, she figured. Stuck with the pain in the neck of the group.
Doris stretched. "Alright, let's just get changed. We might not be going to bed anytime soon, but I'm sweating like hell."
Selina sighed. "Alright. Which bags have our clothes?"
Harleen's smile faded as her face turned nearly as white as her face paint. She began to cough and laugh nervously. "Well, now that ya mention it..."
Leslie stared at Harleen in disbelief. "Are... are you implying that you forgot to bring the clothes?"
This just caused Harleen to become more nervous. "Well, not so much implyin' and more... kinda admitting."
Everyone looked at Harleen, mouths agape. Eventually, Barbi spoke up.
"You're not serious, are you?!" She spat. "Do you expect us to sleep in our clothes?! That's... disgusting." She gagged.
Selina facepalmed. "Damn it, Harleen! You were in charge of packing and bringing the clothes!"
"And I did! I just... y'know, forgot to bring one of the bags." The angry looks on the rest of their faces didn't fade, causing Harleen to sigh. "Look, in the early morning, I'll drive back to Selina's house and I'll bring 'em back! The drive up here was like, four hours. I'll go early in the morning, too!"
The rest just mumbled to themselves, still being mad about Harleen's little mistake. Except for Carol. She was still on her phone, staring at the screen. Her eyes looked to be getting a little misty. Selina sighed. She knew just what she was looking at. Without a word, she snatched the phone off her, causing her to snap out of her stupor.
"Hey! Give it back!" She whined. Selina ignored her as she stared at what was on the screen. It was was white box that said 'SORRY: THE OWNER HAS BLOCKED YOU'. Behind it were blurry pictures, though she could tell that they were Hal Jordan. It was practically all Carol used her account of that site for, besides posting about her 'hard' life and complaining about the twist in the latest installment in Just Before Dusk. She rolled her eyes and turned off the phone, putting it into her pocket.
The last action only served to enrage Carol even more. "Hey!" She stepped up to Selina, her eyes boring into hers. "What gives you the right to steal my phone?"
Selina raised her hands up in front of her. "Look, you can have it back in the morning. But for now, give your mind a break from Hal Jordan. You'll thank me."
Carol just groaned and folded her arms. "You're a real pain sometimes, Selina..."
She looked around her, finally registering the rest of their faces. "What's the issue?"
"Harleen forgot to bring the clothes with us."
"SHE DID WHAT?!"
After Carol had calmed down, they had decided to look around the place. They felt like it would be nice to know more about this place. During their little trip, they were all honestly surprised at the amount that was stuffed into the hotel. The place, according to the Riddlerbots littered around, was 20ish stories tall, had an indoor swimming pool for those who paid enough, cable TV in each room, room service that was there with your food in a matter of five minutes, thanks to the chefs, and a bowling alley. They all had to admit, it was incredibly impressive. It was actually kind of a shame that they were only staying for one night, but alas.
Right now, Selina was lying across her bed, staring at the ceiling fan above her. A quick glance at her phone on the desk next to the bed said that it was 23:00. Time for bed, she figured. She then heard a clicking noise, one that signalled that the door was being opened. She sat up to see Leslie walking in. Her blue hair was messy and she had a wide grin on her face.
Selina raised an eyebrow at her. "You look happy."
Leslie laughed as she jumped onto her own bed. "You have no idea. Because we're the first customers here, I got a free trial of some tricked-out ride where I got into a ball and got spun around. I mean, at first I thought it was a thing for babies, but it began to fly in around in every direction and it was going fast and..." She sighed, putting her hands behind her head. "It was actually fun as hell."
This cause Selina is smirk. "Sounds fun. Remind me to try it out tomorrow before we go."
Leslie just snorted. "I'll consider it. Also..."
She walked up to Selina, pulling something out of her pocket. It was a chocolate bar. "Since I was in such a good mood, how about you take this? Got it from the vending machine."
Selina grinned. "Lovely." With that, she tore off the wrapper and ate the bar, marvelling at the taste. Licking the chocolate off her face, Selina pulled herself underneath the covers, feeling herself sinking into the mattress. It was soft, but not too soft, so it wasn't like she was suffocating in it. In fact, it was actually so comfy that, in a matter of minutes, she totally forgot how uncomfortable she felt sleeping in her usual getup, falling asleep in a matter of minutes.
"Hey, Selina?"
Or at least she would, if Leslie hadn't stirred her. She looked over to her friend, who was also wrapped up in her blankets. "What was with that Riddlerbot in the lobby taking Carol's ring?"
Selina groaned. That was what she disturbed her for? Being too tired to actually get up, she settled for just glaring at her.
"It said 'no jewellery allowed'. That was pretty obvious, I'd say." She turned herself so that her face was in her pillow. "Now, please let me go to sleep."
"I know," Leslie said. "But... it just totally ignored you."
This made Selina's eyes open in surprise. "Yeah, I... guess you're right."
"I mean, you have a ring on you right now. Hell, you also have pearl necklace! Why did it ignore you and focus on Carol?"
Selina began to think for a bit about why that could be. However, she couldn't find any answer.
"I don't know. Good night, Les."
"Night, Selene." With that, she heard Leslie snoring away after a few minutes. Finally, a chance to get to sleep.
And that's just what she did. In a matter of seconds, she had drifted off to sleep.
Look's like Mr. E. Nygma has something planned for our little guests. But what could it be? Knowing him, it's probably nothing good. I should know, I'm writing this thing.
I should probably use this as a way to say that this story will probably have longer gaps between chapters. It's a big story, with big stuff in it. it takes time thinking of traps, too. I'm sure the Saw guys can agree with me.
