Mary's eyes snapped open and she found herself staring at the tall dresser between her bed and Shelley's. It was still dark. What had woken her?

There was a rustling sound from the other bed. Shelley was awake, too.

Mary realized her big sister was trying to be quiet. Shelley tried to be the strong one, but Mary knew she worried something would happen to take away the happy home they'd miraculously ended up in.

So Mary slid out from under the covers and slipped into Shelley's bed. She trusted the people who'd taken them in weren't going to vanish.
