Author Note: I was reading over a few of the stories that I had written back in 2019 and they did not feel complete plus this story will be feature for my Father's Day special this year. I knew that I need to rewrite this story. I hope that you enjoy it. This first chapter features the orginal first chapter and it's has new parts at the beginning and some at the end.
Character Summary:
Steve returns to Hawaii following the death of his surrogate father and his wife leaving him. He did not know that his wife was pregnant with their first child.
Lexi is the wife of Steve. She works as a teacher. She is currently pregnant with their first child.
Chapter 1
A few weeks before Steve returning to Hawaii, Lexi was not feeling the best and she knew that it was time to take a pregnancy test. She was not paying any attention when Danny walked into the house.
"Lexi, I'm here. Is everything okay?" Danny shouted at her.
"Yeah, Have you heard from Steve on when he is coming back?" She asked her friend.
"No nothing yet." Danny responded to his friend.
"I really wish that he would let someone know about his planning to come home. I am reaching my breaking point with waiting." Lexi revealed to her friend as she walked into the living room.
"You look like you haven't slept in a few days." Danny responded to her.
"That is because that I haven't slept. I just want him to come back." She responded to him.
"I know that you do. We all do." Danny responded to her with a sad smile. "Do you want me to reach out to him again?"
"Yeah, Just let him know that I am done waiting for him. I need to move on with my life." She revealed to him.
"Lexi, I know that this is not what you want. You just need to wait this out." Danny responded to her.
"Danny I can't keep doing this. I need to be happy again and Steve has decided that he wanted to skip out on his marriage." Danny responded to his friend.
"I know that you are just trying to make sure that his marriage is still in track but I need to make sure that I am happy. I know that Steve would want me to be happy." She revealed to her friend. "I know that this is putting you in a difficult spot and I can understand that you would not want to do this but I need this done. Steve either needs to call and check in with me or come home. If he doesn't do one of these then I am walking." She revealed to her friend.
"Lexi, please don't do this. I will try to get ahold of Steve but give him time to make amends." Danny pleaded with her.
"I can't wait any longer. Danny, he has been gone for two months." She said to her friend.
"I know and you have been waiting so patience for those months. We all miss him." Danny said to her. "I know that this has been hard for you but he would want you to wait and work it out with him."
"I will give him two more weeks and then I am walking away." She responded to him. Danny knew that he needed to get ahold of him.
"I am going to go so I can talk to him." Danny responded to his friend as he walked out the house. He knew that she was being serious about this. He pulled his phone out and dialed Steve's number.
"Hey, you really need to check in with her or at least come home. I think that we need you to come home and fix your marriage. Steve, call me when you get this." Danny said before hanging up the phone.
Right after, Danny had left the house, Lexi went back to the bathroom and looked at the pregnancy test. It was positive and she broke down in tears. This was not how she wanted to find out that she was pregnant. She wanted to find out that she was pregnant with Steve by her side.
"What am I going to do?" She said to herself. "I know that he is not going to stop running off to play hero for his mother or Joe. She also knew that she needed to do what was best for her and their baby. She also knew that she needed to start taking better care of herself.
It had been a full day since she revealed what she was going to do with her husband. She knew that he might try to send someone else from the team to see if she really meant it. She heard a knock on the door and went to go open it.
"Why are you here?" She asked her guest.
"I am here because I don't have a choice to be here. Steve called me and wanted me to talk to you." Catherine revealed to her. "I know that this is hard because I used to be with your husband. I want to be your friend and I want to see how you are doing."
"How am I doing? My husband has been gone for two months and now he sends his ex-girlfriend to check on me." She said to her as Catherine walked into the house.
"I get where you are coming from but I need to know what is going on with my husband." She responded to her. "Catherine, just tell him to either call me and check in or come home. I can't do this anymore."
"I will talk to him for you. I just need you to wait." Catherine responded to her.
"I already told Danny that he has two weeks to either call me or come home. Now I have to get ready for work. Can you please leave?" Lexi asked her guest.
"Alright, I am going." Catherine responded to her as she walked out of the house. She pulled out her phone to call Steve.
"Steve, it's me." Catherine said to him after he answered the phone.
"Hey, how is she?" Steve responded to her.
"She is not good. She needs you to be home or be at least in contact with her." Catherine responded to her friend.
"I know. Thank you for doing this for me." Steve responded to her with a smile.
"I would do anything for you." Catherine revealed to him before hanging up the phone.
Lexi had looked out the window to see Catherine on the phone with someone. She assumed that it was Steve. She did not understand why he could call her but not his wife.
It had been a week and half later, Lexi decided that she needed to get away from Hawaii so she decided that she was going to go to the main land. She was packing up her bag when Danny pulled up in the driveway.
"Hey, I just heard that Steve would be home in about two weeks." Danny revealed to her. He was hoping that it would convice her to stay at the house.
"That is too late Danny. I am done waiting. I asked both you and Catherine to get him to either call me or come home. He chose to do neither of them. He has until I come back to be home or to call me." She revealed to him.
"How long are you going to be gone?" Danny asked her.
"About a week." She revealed to him.
"I will try to get him to call." Danny responded to her. "Just don't give up on him. He needs you as much as you need him."
"I know that Danny." She responded as she finished loading up the car. "I will see you when I get back."
"Okay, bye." Danny said as he got into his car and back out so she could leave. He pulled out his phone and texted his friend.
Just a week later, Lexi had gotten back from her trip to find flowers waiting for her when she got home. She reached down to see that there was a note from Steve saying that he could not wait to see her next week.
"I can't put it past your dad. He is really sweet when he wants to be." She said to the baby inside her. She knew that he was trying to do his best to talk to her but she wanted to hear his voice to make sure that he was okay.
A few days since Lexi's return home, Danny and Mary arrived to the house to find that Lexi was not there. It looked like she had either left yesterday or the day before. Steve was coming home in a few days to this.
"I knew that she was going to do this but I know that Steve is going to have a hard time with this." Danny said to Steve's sister.
"I know. She gave him every chance to reach out to her and he didn't do it besides giving her flowers." Mary responded to him.
"So who wants to tell him?" Danny joked to her. He knew that he was going to be the one that was going to have to tell his friend about this.
Steve finally made it home to Hawaii. He had been through so much with Joe's death and Lexi leaving him. He had finally talked to her about three days after she left the house and him. She had pretty much told him that she could not take it anymore. She was fine with his work schedule but did not like the fact that he would just pick up and leave for months at a time. He dialed her number to try to talk to her but it went straight to voicemail.
"Hey, it's me. I know that you don't want to hear from me but I need to talk to you. I want to fix our marriage. Please just call me back when you get this." He said to her. He turned around to find Danny there.
"Who were you calling?" Danny asked him. He knew that Steve might not say who it was but he had a feeling that it was Lexi. He wanted them to work it out.
"I was trying to reach her. I just want to fix our marriage but she is not answering her phone." Steve said to him.
"Man, I am sorry. I know that she is just upset that you did not call her like I told you." Danny responded to his friend.
"I know, I wish that I would have. I was hoping that I would come back to get to talk to her about Joe's death and while I was gone." Steve responded to his friend. "I am going to go home and try to get some sleep."
Steve got home to find that Catherine was waiting for him. He knew that she would tell him that she told him that Lexi was not cut out for his life but he also knew that she was wrong.
Three more weeks when by and Steve still had not heard from Lexi. He kept trying to reach her but she would still not answer her phone. He knew that he needed to make sure that she was okay so he started to track her whereabouts. He was not paying any attention to Danny walking into the office.
"Hey, Steve. I have a message from Lexi. She wants you to stop trying to reach her. She will talk to you when she is ready." Danny revealed to him. He hated having been put in the middle.
"How is she?" Steve responded to him.
"She is good. She just wants time to think." Danny responded to his friend as they went back to their day.
Another month had went by when Steve started to get annoyed with the whole thing with Lexi. He was annoyed that Danny had been talking to her but she was refusing to talk to him. Steve had decided to clear his mind by going on a run. He had just finished his run when he saw her sitting in the car. She got out of the car right as he was walking up the driveway.
"Lexi, what are you doing here?" Steve asked his wife when he noticed that she had a small bump forming. "What is going on?"
"Steve, I can explain what is going on." She said to him.
"So why don't you tell me what is going on?" Steve responded to her coldy.
"I am pregnant with our baby." She responded to him.
"Why did you not tell me or at least stay here until I got home to tell me?" Steve asked her.
"Because I needed to figure out if I wanted to have this baby with you being gone. Steve, I was upset that you did not even tried to reach out to me and let me know that you were okay." She responded to him before he had interrupted her.
"Don't blame this on me. You left me and I tried to reach out to you many times." Steve said to her before getting interrupted by work. "We are not done with this conversation."
"Okay." She responded to him before they walked into the house.
"I will be back. Please wait here." Steve responded to her before getting ready for work.
"I will." She said to him while watching him walk out of the house.
He arrived at the crime scene when Danny came up to him. He was confused about the conversation with her that he just had.
"Hey, did she come home?" Danny asked his friend.
"Yeah, she is at the house right now." Steve revealed to her. "Also this is not the place to talk about this right now."
The boys were talking when another guy came walking up to them and waited for them to stop talking.
"Can we help you?" Danny asked the man.
"Yeah, I need Steve's help with his mother." the man revealed to him.
"What do you need my help with?" Steve asked him.
"She got mixed up with some bad people and we need your help getting her out of it before she gets herself killed." The man responded to him.
"Okay, I will help. When do I leave?" Steve asked him. He knew that he was going to need to talk to Lexi about this and let her know what is going on. Steve read the file that the man had given him and left. He knew that Lexi should still be at the house waiting for him. He got into his truck and headed home. He got there and walked into the house.
"I have some news that I need to be up front open with you." Steve revealed to his wife.
"What is going on?" She asked him.
"I need to go and help my mom. She is not in the country so I have to go and find her." Steve responded to her. "I might be gone for a couple of weeks to two months at the most."
"Okay. I need to tell you how I feel that you are chosing to leave me at the time that I need you the most." Lexi revealed to him.
"I know and I am sorry. I promise that this is going to be the last time that I do this. I need to be here for you and our baby." Steve said to her.
"Steve, I would want you to help your mother and I know that your sister would want you to help your mother. Just promise me one thing that you will be safe." Lexi responded to him.
"I promise that I will." He revealed to her as he walked over to give her a hug.
It's been about a month since he left to go save his mother. For the first two weeks, he called to check in with her. She had managed to move back into the house with the team's help. She was currently 15 weeks pregnant and starting to show a lot more. She walked into the headquarters to find Danny sitting in his office.
"Hey, are you busy?" Lexi asked as she knocked on the door.
"Not for you." Danny responded to her with a smile. "What is going on?"
"I am starting to worry about Steve. He has not called in two weeks and that's not like him." She said to him as Junior walked into the office.
"Hey, we got something on Steve." Junior revealed to them.
"Okay, Let's go find out what it is and start having a plan." Danny revealed to him. "Lexi, I need you to go. I will come over tonight and fill you in on what is going on. It's going to be okay."
"Okay." She said before leaving headquarters. She really hoped that Danny would find him and make sure that he was okay after all they had each other's backs.
