Something was not right.
Throughout the entire match this thought had been nagging at Akira. It was in the way the Go stones felt between his fingers; they seemed lighter, almost, and weren't perfectly round. It was in the stones' color, a rich, dark brown instead of black. It was even in the slightly unusual sound the little pebbles made when they connected with the surface of the goban. Mostly, though, it was in that damn laughing smile on Shindou's face, even though the boy was obviously losing the match! The lingering smell of mint and chocolate did nothing to alleviate Touya's confusion…
Akira seized a new stone, intending to make his move, but his hand remained poised in the air above the goban. Even the way the match began was odd, thought the young prodigy. In fact, Shindou had challenged him! What's more, there had been no nigiri; Hikaru had insisted on playing white.
Hikaru flashed a cocky grin at the former Meijin's son, snapping the longer-haired boy out of his thoughts. Akira tensed and gripped the captive stone more tightly between his fingers, shaking slightly with anger as—
Splat!
…the hell!
A strange white goo smelling of peppermint oozed from the now squished stone onto Akira's fingers. His eyes went wide…
Hikaru burst out laughing.
